Title: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+
Post by: p2 on July 05, 2011, 10:39:02 am
Please help!
Someone of my class (in school) has a really bad but on the TI:
The batteries are only thee days old, but the TI is starting.
If you press [ON] nothing happens.
But if you press on lonher (hold it), the whole screen gets darker.
But really onla a bit. And very slow.
after one second, it stopps with getting darker.
Then nothing happens.
If you stop holding [ON], the TI turns off, again.
I've tried everything.

First I thought, It was a very unfriendly ASM program or an APP in "autostart"
but I've changed the batteries while pressing on, and everything else.

Tomorrow we'lol write a class test, were we need our TIs.

My idea is, to turn out the BACK-UP-BATTERY.
But I'm not sure if it won't kill the TI. (In cause of the bug)

should I turn out the Back-up-battery, or not?

Maybe the contrast needs adjusting?

well, I would backup up first, if you can, and then pull all the batteries, including the backup battery out and let it out for an hour before putting fresh ones in.

If you believe that it's some kind of virus or bug in the code:

1. Remove the four normal batteries
2. Hold DEL while re-inserting the batteries (you may also need to press ON while holding DEL)
3. Your operating system will be deleted. Send a new one using TI-Connect.

Note: Don't do this if you can't send a new OS using TI-Connect!

Of course, it might also be some kind of hardware-related error...

No reaction on pressing any other key.
already tried it!

And how to reset?
I can't start the TI in cause of the bug

I've given her this batterys only tree days ago.
The batterys of her TI were empty.

Do you mean for a few hours in cause of very-small-batteries inside the TI?

I've thought of a virus, first, too.
But she REALLY is noone who plays on TIs.

The only things she has, and ever had on the TI is the APP Deutsch
(Makes everything German)

3. Your operating system will be deleted. Send a new one using TI-Connect.
That may be a little problem...
I'll see her tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon we'll write the clastest.

I don't think she'll be happy if I delete her operating system without any possibillity to send a new one on it!
(IF it won't work with sending a new one)

OK.

NO reset-key on the back

TYPE:
-TI 84 plus

OS:
-2.43

APPS:
-Deutsch (makes the TI german)
-And the normal APPS (Finance, ...)

PRGMs:
-No programs.

TI WAS NEVER CONNECTED WITH A PC
BUT TWICE TIME WITH ANOTHER TI (one of them was mine - sending Deutsch)

No no no.

well, I would backup up first, if you can, and then pull all the batteries, including the backup battery out and let it out for an hour before putting fresh ones in.

First off, if you do this, you only need to wait about 10 seconds to a minute.

Secondly, holding DEL does not delete your operating system. It boots to the boot code which will clear ram so that the OS has a clean slate to work with. I sometimes do this daily. Doing this is the equivalent of taking out all 5 batteries, and in all honesty, you only have to slightly remove 1 battery for about 5 seconds and then replace it while holding DEL.

So in the end, take out a battery, wait 10 seconds, put it back in while holding DEL. If that doesn't solve the problem, and you say you've already tried new batteries, then most likely the calculator is dead. You can try a new OS, but I doubt that's the problem.

So putting out batteries, waiting a minute and put them back.
Press on while holding DEL

If that doesn't work, Put out batterys AND back-up-battery

But what will I have to do, then?
(after puting out every battery, waiting, and puttingg themn back?)
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+
Post by: thepenguin77 on July 05, 2011, 11:27:03 am
No, you put the batteries in while holding DEL. Not ON + DEL, BATTERIES + DEL.

After that, you can try taking out all 5 batteries, but in all honesty, that's no different that ^^, so your next option is probably an OS resend.

Is this possible from TI to TI?
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+
Post by: thepenguin77 on July 05, 2011, 11:40:01 am
Possible and easy.
1. Hook up both calculators via whatever link cable you have.
2. If the receiving calculator is being weird, pull out the battery, hold DEL, and put it back in.
3. On the sending calculator, go to 2nd>LINK>Send OS
4. Wait about 5 minutes and it should be done.

I don't have to go on RECIEVE on the other TI?

No, if things go as they should it should display a "waiting to receive os" message or something similar.
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+

OK.
Thanx.
But I'm not sure if I'll take out the back-up-batterys.
I'll tell her what you all have said, how to do that, but she'll have to do thet by herself.

(I don't want to pay this TI, if I "kill" it.)

But I'll try the BATTERYS IN + DEL
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+
Post by: jnesselr on July 05, 2011, 12:14:34 pm
It's impossible to "kill" it.  If you have another calc and the calc to calc link cable, you can easily not worry about it.  Unless she wants to keep everything on it, though.  Just remove all the batteries and put them back in, or do the batteries + del trick.

If yes, I'll take out EVERY battery (even the back-up-battery)
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+

The worst thing that can happen when you take out every battery is a RAM clear.

my responsibilities? no, I won't be the one to be blamed for anything you could possibly do wrong.  I can guarantee I wouldn't break something, but I don't know about your entire technical skills, and can't vouch for you.  I can vouch for the information and that I have screwed my calculator up with a bit more than what you are talking about (ie, no OS at all) and have been able to fix it.
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+
Post by: p2 on July 05, 2011, 12:35:13 pm
I mean that you response the instructions you gave me
(putting out EVERY battery, and that I will be able to send a new OS on the TI)

What can I do wrong there?
If I don't want to see, what is inside a calculator, I can't do anything wrong.
(She gave me the allowing to delete every data on the TI - So I can delete everything)
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+

If you've replaced the OS and nothing changed, then there are basically four possibilities: Boot code bug, Hardware bug, the hardware is broken, or User error.
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+
Post by: p2 on July 05, 2011, 01:10:56 pm
I think of a boot code bug.
what else is possible?
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+
Post by: AngelFish on July 05, 2011, 01:21:07 pm
I *highly* doubt  there's a boot code bug unless you've been playing with Flashy lately. If there was, your calc never would have booted from the factory.

Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+
Post by: Hayleia on July 05, 2011, 01:31:21 pm
Flashy is an app that mess up the boot code, but I don't think she played with it.
If there was a boot code bug, the calc would NEVER have worked.

so, in summary of what everyone has said so far, and laid out as clearly as i can:
-firstly, ensure you have a calculator of the same model as her calculator with you as well as a link cable that can connect the two
-secondly, remove the back of her calculator, take out one battery, hold the DEL key, and reinsert the battery while still holding the DEL key
-thirdly, press ON on her calculator. if everything has been successful it will show you the message:
Waiting...

Please install
operating
system now.
-fourthly, press ON, then another key when you see an error message, and then ON again to restart it. if all has gone well then you should see a Ram Cleared message.
-fifthly, if this does not solve the problem, repeat the DEL + Battery Insert step, but do not press on when you see the waiting message. instead, connect the two calculators via your link cable, on your calculator, navigate to the link screen (2nd + X,T,ө,N) and select the G:SendOS option. if you see an error message on her calculator then you most likely took too long and the sending has timed out. try it again. if it fails multiple times then it may mean that you are trying to send an incompatible OS from a different hardware model (if she has an 83+ make sure you have one as well. if she has an 84+ or 84+SE make sure you have one of those two as well, etc).
-sixthly, if you have started to send the OS properly you should see this message on her screen:
Receiving...
Operating
System
        [%received]
wait until the percentage reaches 100, you see Validating, and the calculator shuts itself off. this should solve the issue, and if it does not i don't have any further suggestions. good luck!

Post by: p2 on July 06, 2011, 08:31:08 am
It has worked with BATTERY IN + DEL.

BUT STRANGE THINGS HAPPENED:
The batteries (now four days old) are completely empty. They're dead! How and Why?

I'm not able to send my OS to it.
It's recieving, then Validating, and then:
ERROR im Xmit                                      On my TI
1:Quit

ERROR!                                                 On the defect one
Press any key to turn unit off.
Then turn unit back on.

(Tried it 14 times!!)

What can I do, now?
I've got the TI now. I have it here.
But I should give it back to her tomorrow. (repaired)

hmm, maybe something went very wrong and the batteries were drained, flooding the LCD?
anyways, it seems that her calculator is not accepting the operating system on your calculator as valid for being run on her machine. are you using the same model as she is? you aren't trying to send 2.55 to an 83+, are you? :P
if that's not it then i don't know what could be going wrong...
EDIT: i just decided to read the topic title and realised that the 'defect' calculator is an 84+. are you trying to send and operating system from an 84+ or 84+SE calculator to it?

Everything on the TI (hardware) looks ok.
I've tried to send 2.43 to the TI
The contrast of the TI and everything else is ok, it yust dont likes my os.  :P

what to do now??

My TI is a TI 84+ with OS 2.43
Her was it too:
TI 84+ without any OS (now) but before she had the 2.43, too.

Maybe it's in cause of the little bug whitch is on my TI?
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+

have you installed anything on your calculator that has modded the OS? try sending her calculator an OS from your computer.
you can download OS 2.43 here (http://education.ti.com/educationportal/sites/ASIA/nonProductMulti/singapore_apps.html). use your favourite linking software and send it to the calculator when it displays Waiting...

Here is your entire solution:
Install TI-Connect on your computer, or find a second calculator.
On the broken calculator, remove a single battery and replace it while holding DEL.
You will see the message "Waiting... Please send OS now" appear.  Plug the broken calculator into the computer, or the second calculator.
(On the computer): Do not use the default TI-Connect.  Look in your start menu and instead run the OS Downloader.  Follow the instructions from there.
(A second calculator): On the second calculator, press 2nd+Link and choose "Send OS"
This process will take a long time either way (five or six minutes), so just let it do it's thing.

Er...

TI Connect can't find the TI because there's no OS on it.
(I think it's because of that)

Er...

TI Connect can't find the TI because there's no OS on it.
(I think it's because of that)

No, because obviously TI Connect needs to communicate with the calculator in order to transfer an OS in the first place.

I find the best thing to do is start TI OSDownloader, select your model and cable type (make sure it's right), click Next, browse for the OS 8XU file you downloaded, THEN turn the calculator on, plug the cable in, and click Start Download.

TI Connect is a little dumb when it comes to detecting the calculator and tends to send commands that the boot code (the thing you're in when you're trying to install a new OS) gets confused about.
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+

Not true.  The boot code works in leu of an OS.  Are you using the special OS downloader, or the generic software?

As SirCmpwn said, it comes with TI Connect. You can get to it from your Start menu under TI Connect.

No.  Do not use the TI-Connect software.  In the start menu, look around inside the TI-Connect folder for the OS downloader.

Keep trying on the computer for a while, in case it doesn't work on the TI's at school.  Make sure the calculator you transfer from at school is the same model as the calculator receiving it.  It can be finicky, try several times on both methods.

I was wondering about the "same model" thing.  I'm guessing that calcs like 83PSE/83PSE are compatible as well as 84PBE/84PSE? (this without boot code exploits)

no, as in if you're using a TI-84 use a TI-84. If you're using an 83, use an 83.  I don't think it would matter, but I would even use TI 84 SE when you have a TI 84 SE or whatever.  I don't think it'll matter though.
Title: Re: URGENT: Bad bug on TI 84+

The 83+ and 83+SE can accept OSes from 83+s or 83+SEs.
The 84+ and 84+SE can accept OSes from 84+s or 84+SEs.

For all intents and purposes, the TI-84 Pocket.fr is a TI-84 Plus.

There is no such thing as a "TI-84". When you call it that, it promotes confusion (it makes people think "What? There's an 84 non-Plus? Well I know there's an 83 non-Plus, maybe they're similar (totally wrong))"...). Please don't.
