Title: 3-5 week absence
Post by: ruler501 on June 01, 2011, 11:04:11 pm
I have gotten into the python programming course at Northwestern in Natchitoches, Lousisana and will be going to a 3 week class. They disallow laptops, and my parents refuse to get my a nice phone so I will not be on omni much. I will probably be able to get on maybe once every few days but I will have much reduced activity. After that i go on a scout high adventure trip to the boundary waters in Minnesota for a 10 day canoing trip. I will have no electronic there. So for the next 5 weeks about I will have very little activity and almost no progress on m y current projects except for the ones i mange to work on in Natchitoches, like my secret python game.

EDIT:one good thing though is that when I get back my parents are going to get me a laptop. They finally agreed with the idea I need it for school since I do online courses a lot

why would a programming camp disallow the use of laptops?
just wondering, as i'm going to one later this year and they said the same thing.

I'd guess they want to be in completely in control of your computer access. That's the only thing I could guess.

I don't really get the "No Laptops" thing either.

Either way, hope you enjoy it and I'll miss you.

They want you to be social not on a comp(official reason) and I bet also to monitor what you do

EDIT: and the rule was actually no personal computers. they discourage smart phones also. That has a better reason since they make you leave phones in your room and don't want 200+ dollar phones being stolen

Ah I see. THis sucks. X.x
/me hopes not too many people leaves this Summer D: (although given how high last year activity was, I can't imagine activity going down a lot this year considering we have 2x more)

Activity will probably go down on and off while people are at camps and out of touch. This seems very odd to me because I usually think of Summer as when you have a lot more time

Well I mean last year it wasn't even that bad. We had 7200 posts in June and 6500 in July. In August we even had more than June. However, I saw terrible Summers in the past when compared to other months in the respective years. I remember every fall we had to rebuild an entire new userbase from scratch. The worst Summers of all gotta be 2005, 2006 and to a lesser extent 2009 (only August was bad). Those years, activity dropped signifiantly.

In 2006 it was so bad that we went from 4000 posts in April to 1300 in July O.O . We took about 4 months to recover and we even considered a merge with United-TI.

What sucks more about Summer now, though, is that there are more trolls X.x (which means the return of the nDoom policy)

Yeah, but hopefully things should be fine if rules are enforced properly. Besides that while it looks like there are more people leaving, it's only because there are more people on the forums in the first place, so it makes it look bigger. I hope those who leave will return, though. It would suck if they found new interests during Summer and moved on D:. But again, Summer is kinda some sort of guide to discover who cares about calcs in the community and stuff.

By the way, have fun in the programming camp. Here in Germany are only a few public programming organizations.

It will be fun I'm sure. even though at first it will probably be boring since it is a from the bottom course on a language I know already

Cool to hear. :D I just mean there are really people who left and never returned D:. I think the problem back in the days, though, is that the community was less active so people got less feedback on their work, thus, remained interested for a shorter amount of time, not to mention  most people thought everything was accomplished. I think now Axe Parser helped a lot, same for Ndless.

If it wasn't for comp programming I probably would end up leaving. I mainly am for comp even though I do a little calc and android work

Yeah I think it was a bit a good idea to expand the computer sections. I never did beforehand because almost nobody were interested in computer development here before. It's good to have a diversified userbase. Back then, when  people quitted calcs, they left, even if we had computer sections. I think what also helps now is the group of people here in general. I don't know for you and other, but this group sometimes feels like some sort of family, even though it's a friggin huge group.

It does feel like a very close group, but not family(I not very close to my family and am very argumentative with them). the thing is the close group is only the very active members while the ones with little posts are unknown. I'm pretty sure the group feeling is a big reason why people stay

Oh I meant family as in close group of user, not literally. I mean, on some forums everyone does their own little thing and hardly care about each others. On some others, there are usually 2-3 people being together, another group of 3-4 together and the rest just come and go. We get a lot of people who aren't very active and aren't as part of the group yet, but we got plenty of people who are close and seem to have fun losing the game with each others.

Yeah thats what we are is a very close group of people who gladly let others join our group.
I think the introduction board is one of the main reasons we become so tight knit. It allows people to find an easy place to begun known and enter the group
and yes we do have much fun losing the game together

Nah, I'm sure Omni will remain quite active this summer despite various members vacationing/ going on trips etc. =)

You mean omni does not depend on my being here to survive ;)
I hope it stays active. I'll contribute when and if I can
