Title: A Note to all you new users.
Post by: annoyingcalc on November 13, 2013, 06:57:13 pm
This video right here (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting) really explains what many are doing lately. I'm not saying this is all of you, most of you are fine, and are really talented, (or soon will be)

I see stuff like this more and more:
http://ourl.ca/14921/366905
where i can download elimination for ti-84+ plz ?

This was in the "About this board" Section, of a discontinued project.

Or Another where the answer for what to do was on the first page of a 3 page thread that he/she posted in.
On the  Explanation of why the Randomness section can vanish from time to time
thread someone asked where the download for a game was.

I'm sorry if you take offense to this post, I don't mean any, also just because you are new does not mean you are like this.

Those guys aren't here to stay. Just ignore it.

@Annoyingcalc, no offense, but Omni was always meant to be free of hostility and welcoming to newbies. Everyone gotta start somewhere, and although we would like if some of them did a better effort searching before posting, you can't expect everyone to do it right on first try, so yelling at them on their first post without knowing if they ever posted before on a forum is not the right thing to do (at least here, since it's a bannable offense). Get your point accross politely, then if they start screwing up again and again you can start downrating posts and pulling the LMGTFY stick on them (while still being polite of course).

Besides, Annoyingcalc, I don't think you're one to talk when yourself did a 8 years necropost on UTI asking for progress in a project thread then managed to reach -31 post ratings within a single month on Omni and now you just got an extra downvote tonight for this topic. You got better eventually, but it didn't happen overnight, so lower your expectations a bit. Your punctuation, for example, took one year before becoming good.

Just because there are now other calc forums where hostile posts are nearly non-existent doesn't mean Omni should be turned into an anti-newbie site. What if some of those people were planning to stay around like you but felt that your post or some others were too hostile then left for other places or the entire community? There is a difference between newbies and n00bs.

Somehow I like this video. I guess we need to educate people on how to efficiently post in a forum. Stickied, if you guys don't mind.

But of course, as DJ said, we won't blame new people for doing that. But if they post in a nice manner, well it's nicer for us and them.

I didn't mean to be so harsh, and I'm not saying that there was not a time that I did something of such, to improve on the first post, just finished improving it, I have nothing against newbies or noobs, unless they do something bad, which most don't.
also DJ you are wrong it was -37 respect :P

I don't mean that anyone who does this has done something TERRIBLE like put ._. as a smilie, it is fine to be new, just have a better entrance to Omni then I did :P

Right, -37 (I think the 31 was actually +31 when you climbed back up but it remained at 31 for quite a while), but yeah I was making sure that you understand that you did similar mistakes before and that you did not improve overnight. Some people improve faster, but sometimes age also comes into play. I'm not saying to never say anything to them either, since they *need* to improve, but just not literally expect them to post like an expect on their 1st or 2nd message like on certain forums or like over here in some recent threads.

As for the video, as nice as it was, I kinda prefered the old GIF demonstrating someone about to start a new topic but then realized he must search first, since it was shorter. :P

I need to proofread my messages, I didn't mean to say need. I probably also shouldn't be on omni when I am supposed to be writing an essay <_<

Talking about school, Sept-Nov is usually when people got their calc and learned that they can play games on them, so this is why we tend to get many new users who want calc pokemans. I think the October rush of necroposts that happens every year might be a side effect of Halloween-themed trolling, tho.

At least we don't get waves of angry people here to troll (using the excuse their sports team lost).

I remember in 2010 when I saw the Pokemon Purple thread and i've been lurking here ever since :P
It was only this year when I got my Ti-84.

I started calculators trying to find a way how to use the ti-83 calculator to calculator link cable as a silverlink cable.

I personally don't mind when newbies necropost, who knows, they might revive a dead project. :)

Yeah, but if that happens too often, that can be annoying, since people get their hopes up for nothing more often than anything else. D:

That said, people were talking about Super Sonic Ball a few months ago then a week later the final version appeared in ticalc.org archives after a three-year long hiatus. ;D

As much as a little bit of education would be nice, on my first day at Omnimaga, I almost left for good because I thought I was completely unwelcome here, not knowing much about forum being a newbie and all. Then again I am also quite sensitive.

When a forum gets popular enough, it ranks high in google searches so people register only to find answers and leave. I hope I'm not that type of noob. :D

Unstickied. A set of guidelines is fine, and if anyone wants to draft one, I would be happy to pin it somewhere visible, but there are several issues with this thread.

The main rule of thumb is searching the forum (especially the help sections+first few pages of topics) then if you need extra help, ask with proper spelling so people understand you. We are generally nice about it and will just recommend you to be careful, rather than yelling at you like on certain non-calc forums. Proper spelling is even more important on Omni, because a lot of non-English-speaking people use Google Translate since they don't speak English, and Google Translate can't detect typos and spelling errors:

Quote
I cum to Omni 4 inspire help dumb-grading me clac end it bing dumb help
Try to translate the above to French ._.

But yeah, in general, on Omni we understand that everyone starts somewhere and I agree with AngelFish.

Weirdly enough, my first posts were not so noobish. But then I became noob before getting what I am now O.O

edit sorry if that sentence is not English but it's the morning and I am in a hurry so I don't check anything

I think some people are more careful at first, then when they feel comfortable around the place, they become more loose. :P

I was in middle school when I joined. Needless to say, I posted like one back then. :P Anyways, I think we need to give the new users a chance. They will no doubt make mistakes, but we should politely point them out/correct them instead of responding with hostility, and they will soon pick up on proper forum etiquette.

You shouldn't have seen that one sig one of our 2006-07 member had. It was literally a bunch of blinking smileys (the smile face above and a darker emoticon) forming a rectangle, spelling his nickname.

The blinking smiley face is from the old board, when we tried to have as many smileys as possible, and I don't remember why I added the *.* one :P

I believe those are for when you snacked on too many SMB fire flowers at one time and may need to consult a doctor and/or the fire department. :P
