Title: And so Begins the Rest of my Life
Post by: {AP} on December 06, 2008, 07:23:14 pm
In case some of you are interested in what's going on with my life and why my programming has temporarily halted.

Well, I've officially tolerated where I live long enough.
Next September I become 18 finally.
The summer before that (this next one coming up), I plan on moving out of my house and living with my (long distance) girlfriend.

(Note: No worries, I've met her in real life last summer and we've been dating for over 2 years. Three by the time I'm 18. We're both more than convinced that we're going to be together forever, so none of this is an issue. Even her mom is in full support of our relationship... and her dad isn't as much... but he doesn't live with her and is quite insane. Everyone wants him dead. Not important though.)

Now... this doesn't seem like anything bad at all. In fact, it's a refreshing breath of air from my childhood.
Seems like a dream come true.

There is ONE issue... I'll have to plan on getting a job while attending (and hopefully passing) my senior year of high school (assuming I pass this year...).
I'll be living with her and her mom for a few years at least... but they're not exactly rolling in money.
So, I'll have to be helping a lot. Not to mention, I'll have to help with bills and food expenses while saving for college so I can get a better job and eventually a house of our own.

I'll have start-up money from friends to get there and live a month or two.
I don't know if I have my parents support yet since I don't want to worry them until I've gotten everything planned.
But, they can't stop me from going since I'll be 18.

I've decided that no matter what... I'm following through with my plan though.
It's going to be hard... there will be bad times...
But if I stay here... I'll go insane. I know it.
I'm safer leaving.

I understand how you feel, at one point everyone needs to move on in some ways. Altough you will still live with a parent even if not yours, the point is that at one point you need some liberty in the way that you can now do stuff your own parents wouldn't have allowed you to do like staying at your gf home all night without warning them (just an example) and not having them complain all the time because you use your calculator too much and them taking your calc away for a week for that. My mom cancelled my internet because I went on the net too often back in 2007 and I was left without any access to the old Omnimaga forums for half a year at home. I only had access every now and then at internet cafés and you can see what it caused if you go in the "Feedback/Question" section of this new board and look at the monthly post counts thread. As soon as this happened I made my final decision of moving the next summer.

Living on your own means more home tasks but at least there is some changes and in most cases more liberty. I do hope everything goes well at your new home where you are gonna move. I hope you're not leaving the community though O.O

I don't plan on it. I'll just be on hiatus.

You're looking at a z80 programmer for life.
Even when it's considered obsolete, I'll continue trying to dish out new stuff.
Maybe even in ASM later. Who knows.
I'm not dropping my TI 84+ SE ever though. I love that machine.

Just so you know, I plan on joining an actual console video game making company down the line.
I'll keep everyone here updated when that happens too. (if Omnimaga is still going)

My point is... I'll be here at omnimaga, programming on my calculator forever.
It'll just be as often as life allows it is all.

Well, this is a really big decision so I hope you've thought it out completely. It is true that if you are 18 your parents cannot stop you, however I hope you are able (If you are sure about following through with this) to part with them on good terms. I know parents can drive you up the wall sometimes, but usually they have your best intrests at heart(Again, I don't really know your situation so I can't say). Sometimes it is necessary to get out from under your parents roof and this may be the case. At any rate I hope things go well for you whatever you decide. Remember also, school > calc games Especially senior year.

Definately wish you good luck. Its tough out there. And I hope you've planned some sort of bailout, in case it all goes pear shaped. Always plan for the worst-case scenario. Don't want you or anyone to end up in my predicament. But it seems you've got a handle on things. So good luck, and enjoy your freedom!

You and me should start a company. That's what I plan to do as well once I finish my contract with the marines. I'm actually studying CS in college right now. We should keep in contact just in case.

Also, it's good that you're taking your life into your own hands. Best of luck with whatever happens.

You could port the entire Reign of Legends and Reuben Quest series to the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 in 3D

Unfortunately, as of the posting of the topic 'Life's a Bitch'... I have NO idea where my future is headed.
I still plan on college (hopefully) and the whole video game programmer career...
But otherwise, I'm stuck where I am and have no idea how things are going to end up.
My life plan was de-railed that day and it's still under major reconstruction.

For college I might recommend taking a sabbatical year if you don't have enough money, because it's quite expensive. Take a year to work full time and after moving, if you think you can do it/afford it, then head to college. I do hope they still offer loans for students, even with the economy going down, though

Oh yeah they still offer loans. They just increase the interest on them ;) But yeah I agree, if you don't have the money, take a year off and work full time. Or you can be like me and enlist in the military..they pay for your college. Heh

Yeah military is another solution, altough if you are the kind of person who absolutely hate doing physically demanding work like me Idk if it's a good idea, and you might be forced to go to Afganistan at one point if they send more troops x.x

I know DSPLord/Trodgor_The_Burninator/Darksideprogramming went to iraq a few times in the past. My hope when this happens is that he won't be put in an extremly dangerous place where he could get killed x.x, but in Afganistan I think everywhere it's dangerous because of hidden bombs, not to mention that insurgents gets more and more powerful with the time it seems. They really gotta get the troops out of Iraq as soon as possible and send them in Afganistan instead

I'm sure he'll be fine. We'll just have to see what happens.

Military is not in my plans at all... but if we get into any major war... I'll probably be drafted with my luck.

same here. Well, the thing though is that every world war canadian government claimed there wouldn't be any forced draft and I think people even voted against it, then after the second half of each world wars they still applied the forced draft. People who didn't want to go at war hidden in wood and I heard some people lived in woods for several years after war was over to not get in trouble
