Anyone do Folding@Home?
« on: September 28, 2011, 04:31:27 pm »
I fold and am currently still on the default team. I just got into the top 200,000, with 35369 points. (yay!) I only fold when I am on or at least am in front of the computer. The only computer that contributes to me is my laptop, one that has an i7-620M (2 cores, 4 threads) and a Nvidia Quadro NVS 3100M. I run the SMP core on my CPU, and unfortunately my GPU is not supported, although it can run CUDA code. (My GPU is so rare that they didn't bother to add it to the compatibility list)

I don't, but that would be interesting to do a Omnimaga team.

It's this. Basically a distributed computing system on an enormous scale to help Stanford University biology projects simulate protein folding and other intensive stuff.

Yes, Folding@Home is massively powerful. Wikipedia says it's the fastest "computer" in the world (I'm not so sure about that though, since the K computer is at 8.162 petaflops, while Folding@Home is at 4.155 petaflops) Perhaps these petaflops point to different architectures that shouldn't be compared? I don't know.  ???

69 work units :P

Your GPU is very low end, so you wouldn't get that much points anyways, maybe 1000ppd max. With a laptop, you shouldnt fold on both the CPU and GPU anyways, they will get really hot and your laptop fan will sound like a miniature leaf blower. I used to do folding at home until I realized I would wear out all the fans in my computer, one already makes funny noises. Back then, I used to get 10-12k ppd on my i5 2500k and 9-10k ppd on my GTX 460.

That is odd. Are you using the single core or the SMP version?

Yeah I agree with toxic_kitten, that is definitely too low. (it takes me 9 minutes per percent, folding on my inferior processor) Even if you were folding single core, it should be maybe 30 minutes per percent.

Back then, I used to get 10-12k ppd on my i5 2500k and 9-10k ppd on my GTX 460.
I am soooo jealous of your hardware! (runeazn, you too!) My dream was to build my own desktop since maybe 6th grade, and my parents never will pay for it. (They can buy me all the laptops they want because of a special university deal, although that's not something that should be abused) Did either of you build your own computer? If so, do you overclock?

I built mine my self as a birthday present. The CPU is overclocked from 3.3 to 3.6 ghz (just so I could say I overclocked it, it is so fast I have no real need to overclock it) and the GPU from 750 (factory OC) to 822 mhz.

I'm hoping to get a job next summer so I can buy a computer myself too. I might grade papers on Art of Problem Solving if they hire me because I'm too young for most other jobs. :(
