Title: AP Tests
Post by: Sorunome on April 30, 2013, 07:42:34 pm
So, AP Tests are coming up, and what kind of AP tests (if any) do you guys have?
I'll take on May 8th AP Calculus AB and BC

You can't take the two tests at the same time... unless you mean that you're taking AP Calculus BC, which encompasses AP Calculus AB in material and whose test provides an AB subscore as well.

IDK, my calc teacher just says its some kind of double-test

Taking AP Computer Science.
I have no idea when the test is or what is on it.
My teacher is bad :P

In 10th grade, I'll be taking AP Chemistry and maybe AP Statistics.

DON'T TAKE STATS

my all-caps statement of the day

Why not? :P

Because stats sucks. period.

I am taking German, Government, Economics, Computer Science, Calculus BC, Physics B and both C exams, Psychology, and Literature
Because stats sucks. period.
I thought Statistics was pretty good.
IDK, my calc teacher just says its some kind of double-test
Calculus BC encompasses both exams, and thus you can get credit for both courses in college. You get both a full score and an AB subscore. It seems strange that your teacher hasn’t told you more about the exam.
You can't take the two tests at the same time... unless you mean that you're taking AP Calculus BC, which encompasses AP Calculus AB in material and whose test provides an AB subscore as well.
You can take more than one of the exams that are at the same time. You just do late testing or some other special procedure. All three of the Physics exams are at the same time on the same day, but I will be taking Physics C a week and a half after the day it is supposed to be taken. So you could probably sign up for both of the tests, and look like an idiot to you teacher. You are probably allowed to sign up for every test, and look like an idiot to the school.

I thought Statistics was pretty good.

It partially is because the Stats teacher at my school sucks (I had her for precalc), and partially because I just hate stats.

Only taking Computer Science, as a Freshman. Not prepared at all. (I think it's on Tuesday for us.) Next year, I'm taking Stat and Calculus BC and Chemistry and Human Geography. Seems a lot of us here are Freshmen...

I'm taking 5 tests(As a freshman *puts on cool glasses* )
Calculus BC
Physics C: Mechanics
Physics C: Electromagnetism
Physics B
Human Geography

I think I'll be able to get a 5 or maybe a 4 on all of them.

It seems like a lot of freshman are taking AP Calc and stuff...
At my school, the earliest time I have ever heard someone take AP Calc AB is in 11th grade.
But then again, I don't know too many people, so I might be mistaken :P

Because stats sucks. period.

Speaking as a math student: yes, it's boring. Many people would agree with you. It's also the branch of mathematics that is the most useful to the general public. However, you could try to make it interesting: read up on probability spaces and elementary measure theory. Then try to build your knowledge from the ground up. It'll be confusing at first, but I assure you that you'll find stats just a little more bearable afterwards :)

I'll be taking chemistry, computer science, and US history.

Apparently someone in my school got a perfect score in computer science last year (not just a 5, he got full points on every question) and it was a pretty big deal.

I'm taking AP Chem, AP Stats (it's kind of a requirement for the kind of student that I am), and AP World History (although I haven't taken the class due to scheduling).

This has been helping me for the AP computer science, and also has pages on calculus (though i haven't looked at them)

I'm just taking Chem and Computer Science.  I'm pretty sure I'll get a 5 in chem but my CS teacher sucks so I'll probably get a 3 on that.
Title: Re: AP Tests
Post by: epic7 on May 04, 2013, 11:45:55 pm
My CS teacher is horrible too.
It would be nice if she would say something to the class every once in a while :P
Even though the teacher is useless, I taught myself the material and think I'll probably get a 4 or 5.

I guess the AP people think, "Sucks for them!" or ignore them altogether.

Anyway, here are my scores:
AP Chem: 5
AP Stats: 5
AP World: 4

Yeah, I guess they just took the same stance as Microsoft had at first with the Xbox One. By the way, how does scoring works for AP tests? Is it like 10 Perfect, 9 Excellent, 8 Great, 7 Good, 6 Passable, 5 Mediocre, 4 Totally retarded, 3 DIAF, 2 Totally retarted, 1 Justin Bieber and 0 There's no word to describe this?
Title: Re: AP Tests

It goes from 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest, and 5 the highest.

I took fourteen AP exams over the first three years of high school, and none this year. Why? Because college doesn't take it.

Which means I wasted over $1,200 on AP exams already :P

So yeah, to those of you in your first years of high school—see if the colleges you plan to attend actually accept AP scores, and in which subjects. It varies a lot by school.
Spoiler For My scores:
All fives—maybe that was worth it ???

That sucks D:, did they tell you at the very last minute or is it possible to know in advance if a college will take them?

Me, I had to get a 4 or a 5 on Calc AB to get into a distance learning class for calc II/III

Spoiler For my score:
4

Most colleges have their AP acceptance policies online. Some are more ambiguous than others. But the problem for me was having no idea where I wanted to go, so I took the tests to be safe.

Where do you wanna go? I know that the big schools won't take AP credits, but having 5s on your application will certainly help you get in, right?
As for my own scores:

At least in my school, there are many reasons other than college credit to take APs.
1. They are weighted by a factor of 1.06 in the GPA, so if you want to be ranked well, you have to take lots of APs.
2. Our AP classes tend to have better teachers than other normal classes.
3. If you want to be with smart classmates, APs are where you find them.

But the actual AP exams are optional (at my school, don't know about yours), so I could have just chosen not to take them.

At the one i was in the us the actual exam was also optional, though everybody took it.

Hmm well in our school if you sign up for an AP class, you must take the AP.

That seems like a pretty weird situation to me...we know how much we have to pay when we sign up for the course. In my area, it's mostly the parents that pay anyways  :P

Edit: I also believe that our school pays for those who can't afford the exam fee. Also, I'm now wondering if your post was a joke :P

Do they warn long enoough in advance if prices increase? (Eg like here when tuition fees went up by $625 in one year, although the increase was finally cancelled)
Title: Re: AP Tests

I believe the exam fee is revealed sometime near the beginning of the school year. They don't change much, though. Over the past 5+ years the price per test increased by $3.

i had to pay like $89 O.O

My school paid for 4 of mine and the last one was $60 because of some math/science discount. I don't know if that's just my school or everywhere though.

They just had some $29 discount for math and science I guess

I bet that the price is not necessarily for profits and cost coverage as much as it is to discourage people from not trying hard enough and end up failing the same test 3 times. :P
