Title: Appeal from Ashbad
Post by: Ashbad on February 09, 2011, 03:13:45 pm
Hello, dear omnimagians:

Recently Dj has brought to my attention the spamming of IRC and the forums with force of... too much.  And to tell the truth, I'm suprised that it's coming from certain members (who I will leave nameless here) that I looked up upon as role models when I first arrived in omnimaga in mid-october '10.  Anyways, what I'm seeing here in the last few weeks is really making me sick.  In fact, my interest in omnimaga forums is declining due to a few factors:

- Spam on IRC
- People trolling the forums
- And people won't leave DJ the fuck alone

Of course, I was a decent contributer to this as well -- I asked a few times for DJ to look at my forum topic, leading to about a 2 minute ban until we worked it out.  Was DJ overreacting to my actions?  I think not -- I was definately out of line, and I'm sorry DJ;  I hope you forgive me. :(

But I also noticed that not only ios the spam/trolling bad, it's getting worse.  I heard that today, a really reputable programmer here (who will remain nameless) was permbanned for spam, and many others are on the brink of permbanning as well.  Maybe I'm not well respected enough here to say this, but I would really like these people on the edge to stop if possible (which it is), it would really help DJ get motivated of his awesome job of moderating us again, and who knows, maybe he'll even consider becoming admin again in a little bit if things get better...

But my point is if you think DJ is a bit upset right now, you're probably right -- it seems many members of the community are not giving him the utmost respect he deserves.  He pays for the website, he checks it daily, he even helps people out and encourages them when they are in dire depression.  So, I think all of us as a community need to step up and act better towards him -- not only is he one of the greatest calc programmers of all time, he's also the best Admin for a website that I have ever known, and a good friend.

I think that together we can overcome the mistakes all of us made these past few weeks, and promise to DJ a well-behaved 2011 year :)

~~ Ashbad, the 2 bit witchdoctor

EDIT: And that post that was right below I meant to post in another topic by happybobjr, but I have no idea why it posted here... O.O

EDIT2: oh wait it's because I switched tabs before posting :/ my bad I'll delete the old one

thing is, I'm glad you agree, but I feel guilty for getting an upvote for this, it was just meant as a community message :/

Don't worry I'll downvote it for you.

I agree with a few things here and there, but not all Ashbad.

Like what don't you agree with?  I'm just curious, don't worry I won't stone you or anything

I agree with the content of the post Ashbad ;D Don't worry, I think we have to behave well, but we always had to, it's not because DJ left we have to behave better or worse, we were always a stable and friendly community.

We just need to watch out because we have less supervising now, but there are other admins.

I do agree, we were always a nice community to others and newcomers and newbies, but I feel that DJ has been treated like crap lately, and I don't want him to feel intimidated/upset with people on his own site.

I always felt intimidated to DJ, he has/had a lot more 'power' in the forums than me. But yeah you're right.

Hmm personally I disagree there was trolling on the forums, though (unless I missed something?). The problem is on IRC.

Also one of my biggest pet peeve (even more than trolling/spam) is when I try having an important discussion regarding some of this with a member and he ignores me on purpose (I know he does, because that member was active talking with someone else at that time. That person knows very well that I despise this. Since that person did troll, I am convinced he does this on purpose too,.

ANother thing I despise (same person) is when someone trolls or have nothing but negative remarks against someone's work to say, then when someone gets angry at him he badmouths them for not taking a joke, in order to make himself look clean then get away with it. Here are examples:

-A PRIZM discussion occurs, where Fishbot say he found something great while hacking the calc, then suddently the person joins the convo only to say the prizm sucks and TI is much better. This happened twice at least
-When that person brings up OmnomIRC talk, he asks how something works or why something weorks the way it does, but never has anything else than negative remarks to say about Netham45 hard work, despite the person never having made such chat system himself. In other words, all he does is whining about how OmnomIRC works.

There was also the whole thing with people begging me to check their project updates, but that did not even affect me as close as both a ressurgence of real life issues with someone harrassing me and that IRC user doing everything to destroy me. He can't be permbanned for ignoring me, but he's sure not helping me nor himself. Has he ever thought that maybe bothering to talk with me could pretty much solve the entire issue?

Maybe this person should be paying the entire next $334.89 hosting bill?

Remember, it's not an upvote -- it's post approval now.  (I approve of it, btw)

@DJ: Are you ok?  Because I was just checking the IRC logs, and it almost seemed like you kind of snapped momentarily...

I'm pretty sure one of them's checking my every post. >.<

No I am not, and I won't be until that person who ignores me gets his act together and explain his actions (at this point, it may even be best that he does it in public) and that the real life person that does me harm either stops or that I find a way to make him stop. I won't go into details, though, in case the latter may be reading these forums.

Note, the IRC events occured in the last week, mostly at night around 12-2 AM GMT-5.

ANyway I do not know how my activity will be in long terms and I pretty much lost all interest I had for calcs now.

*sigh*
It must suck for you, DJ, to have something you devoted a tremendous amount of energy to start to turn sour.

I think you should take a long break away from Omnimaga -- I feel like you really need one.

Is it me? I'm not very sure, but it the thing with OmnomIRC and I trolled once, it seems like it's me. DJ, if it's me try and tell me by PM or even post here, there is no problem. If it's not, then never mind.

Nah. If you search irc logs from Monday-tuesday night, you'll probably notice who I am talking about. Note I really mean night as in Netham45 logs time. For you it's most likely morning.

That's a huge relief, I checked the logs for curiosity but found nothing, but it's not that important... I guess :S

Because a while ago I went to OmnomIRC and reported a bug, but then checked it was a client thing.

I have to agree, though, that Netham made a fantastic job.

OmnomIRC is awesome. Netham45 really did do a great job. I hope I was not part of the problem please tell me if I was because I would like to fix it if so.

Oh no. i was thinking omnimaga is so good so much discussion and the most posts of any calc website. maybe quality not quantity. Anyway the number of members joining in the past few months are shocking +200 new people. When i first joined i caused quite a racket and was paid for my ways with a weeklong ban. but making an apology counts so much, it really means a lot. But now... I am kind of shocked. veteran members i hear?

Ashbad: well said. I edited your post for one grammar mistake that was bugging me ;) (upmost->utmost lol)

DJ: Sorry to hear you've really lost interest for calcs (as of now, anyway). Hope issues with that guy IRL and with name withheld improve soon :)

Honestly I think we need a new leader to step up in DJ's absence. DJ has always been kinda of an Omnimaga symbol.(well respected, source of inspiration) A new leader to moderate the posts could really keep spamming in check and help with project development. We have many great admins here and one of them should take on this responsibility.

Or instead of it just falling on one person's shoulders all the admins do it, like we are suppose to.

I just thought because DJ has always been a great admin and stuff, but I don't want to leave one person with tons of work to do.
Also is there something I said earlier that caused my post to be rated down  ???

Yeah, as I mentioned, we don't need a new leader, we just need the admins to do a more active job. (myself included).

Yeah, we all need to pitch in.  I can't be on IRC constantly, but I am now making a resolution to read posts starting at 10 minutes a day--nothing but reading posts, and taking more than 10 minutes if I want to add replies.  I apologize to everyone for not being the administrator that I should be.

As for you, DJ, thanks for holding on no matter the trouble.  Not only are you the best admin ever, you're one of the greatest friends I've ever had (and that's saying something, because I have a lot of great friends)

Not sure, prbly suggesting that another admin does the work, which sounded like what I didn't want to do myself anymore. I rated it up, though.

I still think the task needs to be split between admins. We have a news-everyday campaing right now, yet most of the time I was the only one posting news (in some cases, all I needed to do was quoting the original post).

Well I would recommend news suggestions, since stuff easily gets missed. For example nDoom beta. If I was staff atm I would do it but I don't feel like being staff right now.
