Title: Black People, Unite!
Post by: Ki1o on May 21, 2013, 08:19:15 pm
I'm a little dismayed and sort of sad that there aren't many African-American programmers.  I'm wondering if there are any here on this site or if I'm all alone.  So yeah... step up! Show yourselves!

I'm not sure if there are any, but I am wondering the same thing. It would be nice to see just how divers the community is. :)

We should make a study about that or something? That would be interesting to see the demographics of Omnimaga.

I bet that we have or had a bit more than we think, but since people usually don't post their pic online (even privately), it can be hard to know and some people might have the perception that there aren't any. I know JFISH (the guy who worked on this xLIB RPG (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?topic=-1473.msg-19864#msg-19864)), Halifax/Killerplayer and Demon/Randomist/FMR/Insanity (that one guy who changed nicknames every few month around 2006-07) were black, and Digitan000 from United-TI was, too. However, none of those people are around anymore.

Oh really? But that still makes it only three though... there are even fewer who are interested in what I want to study in college (Game development).  I wish there were more though.

If I remember correctly, Raylin was too. I haven't seen him here in quite a while. Also, programming is a very broad field. Although you haven't seen many or don't know if many doesn't mean they aren't there. I think if you actually looked into it you would find that there are more black programmers than you think.

Yeah but I mean that there are even very great/legendary programmers who are black. Eg Digitan made Robot War, which is one of the best game available for calcs, and during their times in the community, while there were more white/pink people of their calc programming level, there weren't that many more either. Maybe at one point we might see a rush of afro-americans in the community, but it probably depends of the time.

Ah yeah I remember him too.

I am kind of curious about the demographics of omnimaga too. There should be a poll (can you add a poll to a topic?) on races, and maybe also what countries people are from.

Actually, I could do a Google form with questions and send it here on Omnimaga.

I probably could and I know only two that are interested in the field.  I also recently found a dev team that were from the Caribbean (which is also where I'm from).
