Post by: Spyro543 on December 25, 2012, 09:09:05 am
What did everyone get for christmas?

I got the new iPad (YAAAAAAAAAAAY  ;D), a Minecraft shirt with the Minecraft logo and a creeper on it, some display cases for my IRL Minecraft blocks, and a blacklight.

Ooh, one of those wooden puzzles, Adri? I got one as well, except that you have to take it apart as well in the first place.
Also, I got several books, some hard candy, and an mp3 player, along with a pretty good-quality set of earbuds.

Probably someone went inactive on Omni (stopped programming and reading the forums) because he/she was obsessed with his/her gift.

Then get that hobby grade RC (if your parents will match you on the price)

http://www.hobbytown.com has great selection ->radio control ->cars ->electric ->Ready to Run Trucks and Truggys is a good place to start (I might have the mapping wrong, don't blame me :P )

Look at the specs on the manufacturer's site to compare.

Traxxas and HPI are good

Losi and Associated are the best, but cost a ton of $$$

Don't buy a Helion (I made that mistake)

10th scale Short Course trucks are the best for on/off road fun!

STAY ON ELECTRIC!!! NITRO (gas powered) TRUCKS BREAK A TON

With $320 (parents matching), I'd get a traxxas slash brushed edition (~$260): http://www.hobbytown.com/Shop/-Slash-1/10-2WD-Racing-Truck-RTR-with-Battery/ and a fast charger that works with traxxas connectors (scout around on that one)

Edit: http://www.hobbytown.com/Shop/-Slash-RTR-with-2-4-Radio-7-cell-NIMH-Battery-Charger/ is a better slash due to the 2.4 GHz radio

It is light for a keyboard and is one of the lower quality ones. I don't know much else what the description of a portable keyboard is. It is pretty much a simple synthesizer I'll get pics later

Cool.  You might want to put a non stock rom on your new phone.  Most custom roms aren't as stable but they are usually a lot quicker.  I've had custom roms on my phone for a while and I like it better than my parents' who kept the stock.

I'm learning to play it now

EDIT: @Nicco I like some of the features of stock like the auto-wifi finder, but I would also like Jelly Bean. I also am worried about this because I don't want to brick my $400 phone.

You know that a good brand CRT tv will beat an HD tv in quality any day. The tv my parents have (bought 10? years ago) is still the best quality I will ever see.

But hey HD tvs are great too because you can get a great size without all that weight. XD
And I got a psvita for christmas. :P

True, CRTs are still pretty great if you play mainly old video games (such as the N64 and below), otherwise, there's HDMI inputs so i can plug my laptop in :D

I was afraid of bricking my phone too.  It usually isn't a problem though.  Just read the directions word for word and read through a lot of forums about it.  You just need to make sure that you know what you're doing before you do anything and if things do go bad and you do brick you can usually ask for help to get it unbricked except lots of android forums hate noobs for some reason.  I have an account on XDA Developers but I never use it, probably for that reason because I'm somewhat of a noob and I'll just get hated on. :P

Usually you don't have to worry. Most phones have a key combination to reboot them in recovery mode (if not, you're screwed), if you flash it you can easily repair and backup your device.

Are there risks of the key being corrupted during such hacking attempt?

Also I'M glad we still have a CRT TV near our LCD one. My LCD TV doesn't display SNES and NES games properly, same for Wii Virtual Console games. Plenty of horizontal junk appears between every row of pixels. Apparently it has to do with lack of interlacing or something.

or you just download recovery software along with you ROM. that way you're wuite sure you can always restore it. I put a non-stock rom on my SE xperia X10 mini pro too, and it rocks! Roms are most of the time more efficient and fluent than stockROMS, since all the unnessescary crap is removed by the developers.

I think most people compare too much with others. Everyone should be glad with what (s)he got, because it is a sign someone thought about you, and found you worthy enoug to buy you a present. My present may "only" have cost about 15 bucks, but you don't hear me nagging :) I just mean that everyone should be glad with the possibilties of receiving a gift, since not everyone gets those.

Title: Re: Christmas - what did you get?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 31, 2012, 03:28:05 am
Well I personally would be glad regardless of the gift, as I got a gift. But yeah I guess nowadays some people might rather get an Android phone that is cheaper, safer (battery) or something XD

No, the problem with most of those is that it isn't the version they wanted. They wanted an iPhone 5 and got a 4S, or wanted an iPad and got an iPhone etc.
Title: Re: Christmas - what did you get?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 05, 2013, 04:37:48 pm
Oh lol. I personally would be glad regardless, unless I asked for a specific version to be able to use some stuff not available in the previous one and I got the other one instead.

But yeah over here apparently now some people re-sell their gifts on Ebay and kijiji. I would personally feel bad for doing that knowing I might get caught lol.

Also regarding my TV issues, this is what I meant:

This happens with every game except in 2-player mode in Sonic 2 and the menus in Secret of Mana. Usually the top of the screen is broken or there is lots of junk appearing all over the place, and some games are totally unplayable. >.<

Title: Re: Christmas - what did you get?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 05, 2013, 05:26:12 pm
Indeed, but depending of how things goes, sometimes it looks the same as Sonic 2 in 1 player mode, while Sonic looks as bad as Zelda. Some games seems to always remain particularly bad, though, like Wing Commander SNES, which is completely unplayable.

Damn. Zelda looks pretty messed up.
Just thought the same

And on sonic, is it supposed to be split screen?

Yes, it's the 2-player mode.

Also yeah it might be the TV because I assume it's different RF connectors and it does the same thing on different consoles. I never heard of Konka TV tho.

I tried both red/yellow/white cables and RF connections and both does the same thing. That TV probably lacks support for non-interlaced stuff and the 2-player mode in Sonic 2 probably only works due to its vertical resolution being twice higher and using interlacing.

I think Konka is made by Panasonic or something, but under a different brand name and cheaper to offer lower prices (bought the TV for $399 back when a normal 32 inch TV costed $800-1300).
