Title: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...
Post by: jsj795 on April 19, 2010, 10:17:13 am
Okay, so unexpectedly, I got $300 at my disposal. So I'm deciding what to buy... either ipad, itouch, or pandora.
I don't have a phone (but probably will get one after i graduate, in 2 months), and my mp3 is getting old, so that's in consideration.
I want something that I can connect to internet (which, all of them does have through wifi, although with ipad, you can also get 3G networking with extra money), play music, video, and game. Which one seems to be the most reasonable and affordable, and also stable?
I think itouch is most stable, then ipad, and last pandora (correct me if I'm wrong  :P
Then comes the memory... Pandora, 512MB Flash, 256 RAM. But it says I can get storage memory upto 64GB using SDHC card, but idk if the card comes with the product, or I have to buy it? and how much is it if I do have to buy it?
With ipad, it goes, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB Flash, and itouch is 8GB, 32GB, and 64GB.
Processors are:
Pandora - Texas Instruments OMAP3530 processor at 600MHz
ipad - 1GHz Apple A4 custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip
and i can't find itouch's processor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and what's the pros and cons of these products?

mhmm hard decision. I don't think the Pandora is that unstable, but it's more a computer than a phone/music player and it's open to development, so no need to jailbreak it. Ipad seems very expensive but more powerful. It seems kinda big too x.x. As for itouch I guess it could be the cheapest alternative. However, I don't know really which one would be the best in terms of quality/price ratio

I would say iTouch would be the best bet. iPad's are on huge backorder as well as Pandora's so who knows when you will get one. iPad's are not that portable and iTouches are pretty awesome when you jailbreak them (well they will be even better as soon as OS 4 comes out so that they can release a un-tethered jailbreak x.x). I would say Pandora except for the huge backorder part...because come one, a mini computer meant for gaming and it has no restrictions :P WIN!
As soon as you get rid of the restrictions with an iTouch though there are some pretty awesome stuff you can do (like true backgrounding, veency, and theming (there is more too :P)). And hopefully sometime in the future they will complete iPhone-linux so we wont have to be limited to the iPhone OS :P link to blog (http://linuxoniphone.blogspot.com/).
anyways that was my 2(+10 for inflation) cents

Go with the Pandora.
Or a downgraded PSP.

My thought:
Since the pandora won't come out until, at least December (according to their website and forum) I get the itouch, and next year, I get pandora? I'm loving pandora more and more, but it seems to be too early in status to have much fun (there are only about 4 released games so far). And the poll does seem to be favoring itouch, and thank you guys for the votes. And Eeems, that actually was $1.20 (20 cents + 100 for inflation)^^ lol

I really would like to run starcraft on pandora tho. That would be epic win!!! But it seems like pandora can't run Windows games :( and starcraft is not open-source

Depends on where you get it.
May I suggest googling the term, 'open-source RTS'?

If you look here (http://www.junauza.com/2008/09/5-best-free-and-open-source-real-time.html)
it says that Starcraft is closed-source. Also, Pandora can't run Wine  :'(
The other games does seem to be pretty good^^ I know many games are in development for Pandora. So hopefully these games will run under Pandora.

@Eeems: about the Linux for iTouch, is it in a working state? I've looked at your link, but I didn't understand a thing...

EDIT: the iTouch CPU is clocked at about 400MHz for the 2nd gen and 600MHz for the 3rd gen IIRC. I also think that it's an ARM... I'm too tired to do it myself, but I suggest you have a look on Wikipedia.

yes it is at a working state, they have the kernel running, but there are no drivers so all you can do is hook it up to a computer and use the computers keyboard to work it (simple command line stuff). So right now, its only proof of concept until they make the drivers for the screen and such.

Okay, now that I know I want to buy itouch, what itouch should I get? I really don't want to spend all $300 for itouch, because I want to save some money for other things to do (like watch movie, buy apps when I get itouch, etc.) Seeing that the prices are for 8GB $200 and 32GB $300, is it better to just buy 32GB? I heard from others that 8GB is enough to do whatever you want, but it seems like i phone OS 4 won't run in 8GB.
And 32GB seems wayyy too big for my use anyways. What kind of itouch do you guys use, if you use one?
FYI, I would rather not buy them from ebay or any other online site, but with cash from the store, since I don't have credit card and I can't trust sites such as ebay for these kind of stuff)
Title: Re: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...
Post by: Eeems on April 19, 2010, 06:01:11 pm
I would not go for the 8GB because it is actually a 2gen, so go for the 16GB...I use a 8GB and wish I had a better one
Title: Re: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...
Post by: jsj795 on April 19, 2010, 07:50:59 pm
it seems like the 16GB is out of line, they don't make them anymore :( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch#Hardware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch#Hardware)
That would have been the best choice. So, it's 32GB then. Thanks guys^^ I hope I enjoy my itouch.

If you want a fourth option, consider charity. Something like Toys for Tots is pretty fun to do, too. You get to pick-out the toys you want to buy for the children. (although, some charities will have the children fill-out request cards so you can buy something more specific) If you go to places like Big Lots, Dollar General or other discount stores, you can get a ton of toys in bulk. Hell - you could go into Dollar General with a mere $20 and get so much stuff that the kid would think Christmas came early. :D

Yeah, I do the charity works in school and my church. You guys know the Christmas Operation? I help in the school to collect the toys and such, and donate the toys. I would do a charity work, except that right now, I feel like I want something for myself (I really don't own any electronics except calculator, a mp3 player that somehow doesn't work on left ear. heck, I don't even own my own computer/laptop).
Although I will give some of this money for offering to my church as I tend to do when I get large sum of money (at least, $300 is really a lot to me because I'm still a high school student and I don't work)

We have something similar over here I think. Some people donate toys for kids who don't get any gift at christmas. We also have some places that sells used toys, one that is a store owned by govermnent. They sometimes had Sega Master System and Genesis games and I got my VCR from there :P

I like how SourceForge lets you accept donations for your projects, and will let you divy it up amongst various charities if you like.

Nice. Be careful when jailbreaking it, though, to not brick it. I heard people not doing it properly and rendering their device unusable

If you want to jailbreak ask me for some documentation on how to do it and I will help. I have all the documentation on how to jailbreak the new bootrom and the programs etc.

I voted iPad just because I know a couple people that have them and they really, really enjoy them.

I can help out with the jailbreak too if you want.

I would recommend you use blackra1n for the jailbreak. Also note that the current jailbreaks are tethered, meaning each time you shut it down or the battery dies, you have to reconnect it to a PC and re-run the jailbreak program. However, an untethered version is in the works, and it will be the most likely released with OS 4.0 (coming out in June).
Title: Re: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...
Post by: jsj795 on April 20, 2010, 06:27:56 pm
Hmmm... may be I'll wait for the release of OS 4 before I try to jailbreak.
And I just noticed that the vote for pandora now exceeds itouch o.O
Well, I plan to buy the pandora for the second batch anyways, which by their estimate might come out around December.
I voted iPad just because I know a couple people that have them and they really, really enjoy them.
And I figured iPad was too expensive atm, especially knowing that apple will release updated version like 2nd generation few months later :P

lol thanks Eeems^^ btw, can you jailbreak 3.1.2? And what happens if I want to upgrade it to OS4 coming Fall?
Yes I can, but as stated before it is tethered. they are waiting for the OS 4.0 release to make it untethered so they don't give away anything to apple on how they do it.
And yes I would recommend Blackra1n as well, or redsn0w 0.9.2 (I've only used redsn0w, but it will not correctly tether boot for some reason). I can also help you after with how to secure your iTouch and which are the best jailbreak apps to install. Give me an email sometime and I'll give you more info.

also on the note of the iPad's :P link :P (http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2010/04/i-make-it-ra1n-on-themipads.html)

Didn't the old iphone screens had risks of cracking by themselves when overheating? I even heard some cases of screen glass explosions. I saw videos of it and it looked like this:

jk not that bad

I just realized that 3rd generation doesn't have a camera :(
And rumors saying that 4th generation will be released sometime September with the camera makes me immensely sad. Any news regarding itouch 4th generation?

did the 2nd one had a camera? /me thinks they removed it purposely in 3rd one if it's the case, to make ppl buy a 4th generation one later

The iTouch never had a camera. Only the iPhone did.

fyi the Pandora isn't coming out in December, the parts were being sent to the UK for production but then the whole Iceland volcano thing happened, so once that clears up they'll get assembled and shipped out.
But good job on your new iPod touch! :)

I hope it won't get delayed too much x.x

gotta hate natural disasters and the like. I'm happy at least to live at a place that is not at risk for many. The last earthquake above we got that was 5.0 or higher was in 1997 and caused no damage, I'm high enough above sea level to avoid floods, no volcano nearby, too far to the north to get huge hurricanes and despite having seen a tornado starting forming in the sky above me once we never had to deal with any. The only thing that did some damage really is the 2008 March 8-9th night snowstorm

I think that's the first batch, and those are probably already sold out through pre-ordering. Even if there were some slots left, I wouldn't want to risk my money on the first batch. The second batch will start once the first batch receivers are satisfied and people who make pandora are assured that they can make money. So they are assuming the second batch will be shipped around December or early next year^^
I might be terribly wrong tho :P This is just my understanding of what's happening with pandora.

True. I wonder what kind of open dev will occur on this. It would be nice also if the companies decided to release games for it, altough I assume they would be easy to pirate.

The sad thing is that I haven't got any apps since I don't have credit card to make an account. I'll probably ask my aunt to let me use her card and promise to get only free apps or tell her if I'm going to be buying anything...
