i just recently got mine out again... like the day before yesterday.... It's as if you guys knew everything about me.... AAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Quit stalking me!!!!!!!!

And on a lighter note: I got them out with intentions to sell them really cheap on ebay, then I looked up the prices and I have about $700 worth of legos, when I bought them I probably spent only $300 (over a period of years, I'm only 15 and haven't had them out in about 3 years).... I WILL be rich!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

Well, I have a ton of Lego's and even made a few models for my school projects. However, my most prized Lego piece is the RCX 1.5 from the Lego Mindstorms Robotics Invention System 1.5 I bought for $86 on eBay. Of course, I had to replace one of the motors, but it was still a great deal. Right now it's inside a wired remote for an all-Lego helicopter I made w/o any instructions. My only three problems with that Lego Chopper are:
  1. The back propeller might be a little hard to control, as the gear ratio is pretty low and the propellers are kind of small.
  2. The main propeller's gears might melt because of the friction from the 16:625 gear ratio I implemented (For every 16 turns the 9v motor does, the top propeller turns 625 times).
  3. The stupid frikken' software won't install on my XP laptop (it was made for 98 and ran on 2000, but it wouldn't run on XP even in compatibility mode) and I can't get the newer software anywhere for free.
Maybe when I return from Budapest in August I might be able to take a few pictures of the chopper.

So...am I a geek or am I a geek? :Ptongue.gif

you are both a geek and a geek imo... but that's just me....
Title: Do you still play with legos?
Post by: Delnar_Ersike on July 09, 2007, 03:52:00 am
Hehe, that's not what I wanted to point out to say I'm a geek. It's that I actually built a chopper out of Lego pieces that might be able to fly. In fact, I researched helicopters and their methods of flying before I built it and the only two things that might stop the chopper from flying are weight and friction in the 16:625 gear ratio between the motor and the propeller. The friction might be a problem, but I made sure the chopper is perfectly balanced between lightness and stability by moving some of the heavier materials (such as the RCX) to an outside controller attached to the chopper via very long cables.
Though NXT is great in the sense that it has a sound sensor and a color sensor as well as built-in rotation sensors to the motors, the kit's price is more than three times as much as the RIS I bought on eBay and most of the wires aren't backwards-compatible to the RIS or to normal Lego parts (the RIS has wires who's ends can be clipped onto normal Lego pieces just like any other piece).

Oh, and to add to the geekiness factor, I'm thirteen.

Hells yeah! Legos own!

Why isn't there an "awesome! of course I still play them" 19+ option? I'm still only 18 but I anticipate continuing on with lego awesomeness until old age! Also, what's the deal with don't tell your gf? I have a gf and it's not like I have a problem with people knowing I play with legos... Hell, I'm proud of it!

yays, I'm not alone!

Well, I played mostly when I was younger (3-14), so I wasn't exactly as mechanically aware of what I was doing, but still managed to do a landing gear like on planes (aka F-18/SR-71), you know, with all the strange mechanisms that hold everything...

I've accumulated a big bunch of Legos by now (>= half a cubic meter, of all kinds), so probably worth alot of $$ by today's standards

...like the RCX in the RIS system, the Pneumatic system in some Lego Technic models, the Medieval stuff from Knights' Kingdom sets (the original, not the stupid new ones with the scorpions and the knights in purple armor). In fact, I even have two pairs of suspension springs I got from a very rare Lego Technic Motorcycle set...and it was for free from a garage sale!

Too bad I don't have the pneumatics. :(sad.gif

But at least I have ~20 kg of Lego bricks to replace it, and a special Motor house thing that can record any input from the motors (you rolling it around on wheels, for example) and repeat the action almost perfectly over and over again. Oh, and I have more than 100 minifigs.

I'm considering taking apart that giant wizard castle siege landscape when I get home, I don't really need it anymore since I only needed it ~three years ago for a 5th grade extra credit project. The only problem is I don't know how to get the marbles out of the counterweight of the trebuchet I made for the undead army laying the wizard castle under siege. Do you have any ideas, cause those marbles are lodged in pretty tight...

Too bad you guys all have high tech legos, I just have a box with full of low-level gears and stuff, but no pneumatics or motors. I bought them mostly in garage sells (whatever "vente de garage" is in english), massive sack for 5$.

7 foot long airplane with landing gears, variable geometry wings and big kinda working engines someone?

I remember at a camp for robotics, there were different Mindstorm competitions.  One was to make the robot that could pull the most weight, and when two robots were faced against each other, which one would pull which.  My friend and I won.  Our robot was so amazing...we called it the "Sears Tower" (because it looked like it).  I think I took a picture of it, but I'm not sure where it is.

Yayz, I'm back home in Cupertino! Now I can take pictures of my Lego Mindstorms RIS Helicopter and my gigantic wizard's castle siege... if I can get them back together, that is. The only problem is my older brother took our digital camera and he's going to be in Hungary for another couple of weeks, so I'll have to take pictures either with one of my friends' digital camera or with my film camera and wait for the pictures to develop. I also realized a gigantic problem with my helicopter design and will try to fix it as much as I can (it concerns the diagonal position the main propeller needs to be in when flying, as I don't want to use another motor for directional control of the main propeller).

Well, after some... complications... concerning my little brother, the helicopter I spent so much time on was almost completely destroyed. :grr:mad.gif On the plus side, I realized a few fatal mistakes with the copter previously and was planning to rebuild it anyways. Right now, I could take a picture of the custom gear box I made for the rotor motor (haha, rotor motor, talk about rhyming!).

The rotor's motor house has been completely rebuilt and even reinforced (it's much stronger now, so it'll resist the friction much easier). I'll have to test it using an alternate programming method (as the CD that came with it has been scratched), but all of them are kind of hard to learn and I've been having installation issues.
In the mean time, I have completely restored my crumbling castle and even added a few more parts to it. However, I have lost some pretty important pieces, including a very rare pickaxe the war's third party is supposed to use to mine the minerals under the castle with. I have also decided to wait for my older brother to come with the digital camera, as he comes back on September 11th (a day before his birthday, and a pretty interesting day for most US Citizens as the mourn the lives lost because of some stock market manipulation conspiracies. I don't want to continue now, maybe when September 11th actually comes).
