This is a final warning: FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME, I AM NOT ADMIN ANYMORE! PLEASE STOP SENDING ME ADMIN REQUESTS AND OTHER THINGS THAT REQUIRES ADMIN PRIVILEGES!
List of people who can't read:
-Undisclosed, per Omnimaga rules. But it's very tempting to give names. Some people in question are hardcore programmers, so you know better, especially considering it has been very clear that I am only news editor since 2011 (on Cemetech I even had to sacrifice limited signature space with a warning in bold and on Omni my member title. Then there's my member color).
Anybody who will do this in the future will be permanently moved to my OmnomIRC and private messenging ignore list, with no chance of removal. The PM/e-mail sent will also be ignored and deleted, since it is not my job to forward this stuff to other admins either. This applies to anyone who got an Omni account, regardless of where I get the PM (Omnimaga, Cemetech, Ti-Planet, Planet-Casio, etc)
But again I wonder why I even bother with this warning topic, considering even a front page news and an epileptic Cemetech signature didn't help.

I THINK WE GOT IT !
(lol, seriously, why so big and caps etc. ?
Also, maybe if you change your username to DJ_O, newcomers won't get confused)
-
Well, why is that still happening? Two possibilities come to my mind:
* Your username being "DJ Omnimaga" may lead some people think that you still are the real Disc Jockey (DJ) of Omnimaga as you once were. (Ninja'd!)
* Some users may only be asking for advice due to your seniority.
I do understand, however, that too many requests easily become a PITA. :P
-
We tried it. That didn't quite work.
DJ is forever incorrectly entrenched in Omnimaga's imaginary as our Benevolent Dictator for Life.
Edit: ninja'd. SpiroH, it's pretty much the latter. Actually, I think the user in question tod me he only wanted you to get the admins. Which you couldn't because you, I and the admins in question were all asleep.
So yeah, DJ have the Internet equivalent of a wise man's big white beard on Omnimaga, everyone knows it's been 12 years he's been here on Omnimaga (which is a whole lot for an internet community) so I think it might be normal everyone goes after him for counsel.
-
Yeah, this very morning we've had a nasty user ('naharensthelm') flooding the site with lots of silly posts and as a matter of fact all mods were asleep because they all live on the other side of the Atlantic. Suggestion: try to engage some european guy as a mod too ('Sorunome' wouldn't mind, i guess)!
-
I already pushed the admins to appoint an active European mod.
Also this blog post sums up everyone's reaction this morning. I know right, coincidentally it also happened in another community I'm in on Facebook this morning, so this post sums it up for both.
http://juju2143.qc.to/post/65349006008/spambots
So yeah, the first names you should be yelling for in case of emergency should be Eeems, Shmibs, DT and Fish, not me and DJ (although in certain cases I might be able to solve it up because I'm still CoT).
-
yes we know you are not admin some people might not get it and we apologize for that. We cant help that people can't tell that you are not an admin by your user group. It's not out fault people are stupid. Sorry. If you want an IM NOT AN ADMIN user group I can make you one. IF you think it will help.
-
Not to hijack this topic, but I'm open for a mod/admin position.
-
I agree, we do need a European moderator.
-
('Sorunome' wouldn't mind, i guess)!
Hm, how did you guess that.
-
the admins will discuss it we give those positions at our discretion so relax we know we need one just give us time to make decisions ^^
-
I thought that DJ was contacted to get an admins number? Anyway, I think a good way to combat bots when no one is around is to have a temp auto ban of a user if their respect gets to like -10 or -20 or something in a specific time period or don't allow people to post every 5-7 seconds! It was pretty amusing seeing the new posts almost get filled up that quickly!
-
Actually, the don't allow people to post every 5 seconds thing might solve the occasional double posting problem too.
-

(lol, seriously, why so big and caps etc. ?

Because even with regular sized (and underlined all-caps) and an epileptic signature, it was still not enough for people to get it. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it still happened with large all caps and swearing. As for my nick, I still had it happen as DJ_O, so it wouldn't make a difference. Btw my nick used to be DJ Omnimaga Not Admin for a while, but the people who didn't realize I am not admin anymore kept complaining about its length. :P
Another issue is that my music sales on Reverbnation and Google ranking actually increased after I switched back to DJ Omnimaga.Yeah, this very morning we've had a nasty user ('naharensthelm') flooding the site with lots of silly posts and as a matter of fact all mods were asleep because they all live on the other side of the Atlantic. Yeah to answer this post and aeTIos' it would be nice if the team was renewed with new staff, but it would be better to get staff that are guaranteed to remain around in long terms and not disappearing for two months every few season or so. Also preferably not wait one year to give new CoT/Admin positions/whatever like last time :P (even if it means pushing back Omnimaga v7/SMF 2.0 upgrade.)
EDIT: Maybe sticky this? :P http://ourl.ca/18451

Hmm, I have a solution I think:
-Change your name completely, something like "noob1337" or so.
-Change your avatar. Why not blank? Remove you entire signature.
-Let the Admins change your level from editor to member,
-Change your post count to 10,
-Disable all PMing to you and
-Censor the word 'omnimaga' every time you use it.
Or they could ban you?
/me runs
-
My bad, it's certainly my fault. I wanted to contact you because, even if you're retireed, you still are the one who gave the name to this site. I suggest you to reread my message. I don't want to be an admin/mod, I'm a volunteer if you are in the need.
Anyway, my goal wasn't to makes you snap or something else, but I thought you were close enough with the active team, and share with the staffs the requests/appliances you would find serious. That explains too the twitt yesterday about the spam attack.
(After all, I wasn't aware that Eeems was an admin unless yesterday)
I think I get how much you are angry (I got same problems in a other topic), and if I deserve to be ignored, okay. But is my fault worth shouting against everyone? I just wasn't thoughful, that's all. I feel bad for my fault, and for the everyones who are innocent.

lol, thats good. :D
But seriously, think of all the people who are not omnimaga regulars.... and that doesn't mean they came from cemetech either. The first place I saw you was UCF, and the first place Casimo saw you was Planet Casio. Some have only heard about you on casiopeia. You can't expect them all to know that your not admin anymore, not when OMNIMAGA is in your avatar, and you are such a legend elsewhere. And some people, myself included at one point, have a hard time wrapping their minds around the fact that a founder and 12 year member would give up his admin position.
-
DJ_Omnimaga is basically an honored grandparent in the community :P
Seriously, outside the internet, if I want to figure out how to do something related to college, I am more likely to ask the retired professors that hang out at the coffee shop than I am to ask the dean or something.
If we append '_Omnimaga' to all regular user names, then you will seem like a normal member :D
-
It will probably keep happening. The ones who do it also aren't the ones reading this thread.
-
Really, and I'm not kidding here, you should change your name to something like calcaddict1024 or something.
-
Nah I don't think I really should have to change my nickname. That said, one nice forum addition (although I tried it and it looks ugly) would be to install the colored member names mod that shows the member color anywhere instead of just the online/new posts list. When people read topics, they would at least see the user color.
The other solution could be to literally put me in the members group, but add myself news editor privileges as a secondary group, so my staff member status of editor is hidden.
Also, maybe stickying the news telling who to PM in case of issues and adding the admins list and those who are not admin in the rules section and stuff.
@Eiyeron I only am posting this way to everyone because you are not the first person with who this happens. A lot of the people who did it, however, are active Omnimaga members who got enough time to see that my nickname color hasn't been blue in quite a while. Besides, if I was still admin, you would probably see me updating the projects sub-forums, approving files/tutorials and keeping the site navigation/version up to date on a regular basis anyway :P
-
DJ Omni, I still see you as a admin as I still see Totoyo as one (even if he too is retired).
But colored nicks is a must-stash...
-
Ok well, if me and Totoyo have posted news announcing their retirement, then there is a reason. Even if we are founder, we are still retired. We retired for a reason: We don't feel like doing this job anymore or cannot keep up with it any longer. Also, this doesn't mean we are still willing to forward admin tasks to actual admins.
I mean, if someone used to work in a grocery store as the boss and decides to retire at 65, you're not gonna continue bugging him so that the store gets gluten-free food in stock, right?
-
You have a point, but one last thing: the said boss is still helping the others in his grocery! :p
Sorry, I'll try not bugging you anymore if so!
-
Hmm, good point DJ_O. Sometimes it bugs me when I am on break and I am looking for somthing to snack on and a somebody comes up to me with questions. A way to switch to 'plain clothes mode' would be useful on the internet. Maybe a little sprite could be used specifically for this ?
-
That would inform people that you are potentially capable of acting as a mod/admin. It seems counterproductive.
Besides, DJ's problem is that he isn't one, so he wouldn't have this system anyway, but people think he is.
-
You have a point, but one last thing: the said boss is still helping the others in his grocery! :p
Yeah true, but when he retires, it his his choice if he decides to stop helping others. As I said, he is retiring for a reason.
Another idea could be to modify the current member icons so that the ones that don't say admin would have an extra message below telling users to PM admins for site issues/etc. :P
-
Now that I have had more time to think, I would like to point out that of the 5 admins, they have made 147 posts in the past 2 months and two of them made more than twice the posts of the other two combined.
DJ_Omnimaga made 822 posts.
On other forums that I have been a part of, there are usually at least to or three very active admins and admins are among the most active users. Currently two of the admins are pretty active on the forums (and so would be more noticeable to users that cannot access IRC), so that is good, but DJ_Omnimaga is by far the most active/experienced member on the site.
-
Well it depends. By experience, eeems for example would be much better than me for server management. If I ran the site I wouldn't even be able to manage a VPS since I would have no clue what I am doing. On the other hand I did some SMF admin in the past, so I might know more stuff on that point (such as how to create subforums).
Regarding posts per month, you also have to take in account that a lot of admin posts might be in the staff section, which members can't see. As a result, if an admin posts 10 times in projects, since members can't see the staff section, a 50 posts admin that posts 49 times in the staff section will look less active than the admin who posted 10 times.
-
By my experience, setting up the webserver and MySQL on a VPS is pretty straightforward. Unless you want to configure emails. That's not really straightforward.

/me hesitantly checks to see if shmibs is one of those two
-
Oh, I meant, "more than the other three combined."
But yeah, you and Eeems have the most, followed by Deep at 14, Angelfish at 7, and Netham at 2.
-
Hm, does that 10 posts per month CoT rule still exist? And yay I post as much as every admin combined.
-
I don't think so, considering 70% of the staff didn't post in months.
-
Do you need fresh blood for the staff? That comes well, Halloween is coming! :E
I wouldn't say that the number of posts define the activity of a mod/admin. If that is true, I would be quite inactive on P-C for weeks! ^^

oh god, email is such a PITA.....i just got jim to config it for me :P

Well it depends. IMHO, staff should at least be active to a minimum, better if more active too. Of course for the Coders of Tomorrow team it's best that they have projects in the works (calcs, computer, etc), but I don't think the Omni team would be interested in hiring staff that will only post once per month or disappear during 6 months without warning. If a member applies for staff without any will to participate and instead prefers to play Minecraft 8 hours per day, then he's not really interested. After all, the goal is to keep the site alive, unlike MaxCoderz and UTI, which barely had any staff renewal for years then ultimately died (although MC still hangs on, sort of).

could i be staff? :3

[18:21:43] Streetwalker hey
[18:22:16] Streetwalker I got an idea about dj being always seen as an admin Tongue
[18:24:04] * pimathbrainiac thinks we should hold yearly admin elections
[18:24:13] pimathbrainiac Democracy, people
[18:24:33] Sorunome lol
[18:24:42] Streetwalker lol
[18:24:49] pimathbrainiac well we should
[18:25:26] pimathbrainiac you become elevated in reward for being an active and productive member
[18:25:30] Streetwalker my idea was an smf mod that would display dj as a regular member, hiding his sig, avatar and post count and only showing DJ_O as a nick
[18:25:47] pimathbrainiac nah
[18:26:31] Streetwalker then add a hidden checkbox that forces people to read an EULA type thing before they can see his real profile Tongue
[18:26:44] pimathbrainiac lol
[18:26:56] * calc84 has joined #omnimaga
[18:26:56] Streetwalker well not really hidden but put it in the options
[18:26:57] pimathbrainiac no one reads the EULAs
[18:27:18] Streetwalker forced eula ftw
[18:27:24] Streetwalker not too hard with js
[18:27:33] pimathbrainiac yeah, but I always just scroll to the bottom Tongue
[18:27:44] Streetwalker force people to scroll to the bottom max one line /sec
[18:27:56] pimathbrainiac that would be torturous
[18:27:58] Streetwalker and make it short too
[18:28:07] Streetwalker lol
[18:28:08] pimathbrainiac still
-
wait what?
also 50th post! :P
-
That's why you put in a random nonsense line or two, "remember the word 'chicken'" or something and use that instead of a checkbox >:D
-
The ABXL forum software requires you to type a word buried in the FAQ and rules. Another forum I go on requires you to find two nonsense sentences in the rules too. So yeah it works. Unless it's buried too much and everyone complains they can't find it. (Kinda like the latter forum, much people complained they couldn't find nonsense in the text.)
-
I dont post nearly enough but i handle alot of stuff else where instead and keep everything running smoothly.
Staffing is handled by me and eeems we do staff reviews on a pretty often basis (I poke him about it about once a month typically) when we want new staff its handled. Requests for positions are immediately declined. we will choose you if we want you and will give you an offer. This allows us to put in people we trust and know into staff and keep our email down with spam.
As for post count I am not on the forum enough to check that. But i see the site is handled adequate when i do come on so afaik the site moderation team is doing there job and so are the members. Thanks to those of you who do use the wonderful report button!
any other questions ill answer them to the best of my knowledge.
-
Didn't you have issues with your parents to nearly the same extent as SirCmpwn and JustCause at times, though? IIRC there were times where you were grounded every month or so and could never post during summer due to that or various other reasons, but now that you moved out, will you have some extra time?
And yeah IMHO it can look a bit suspicious when someone begs non-stop for staff powers only a week after joining. Even when they don't, I think it's usually best that the team knows the member before adding him.
That said, IMHO I think that when 90% of the staff projects are inactive, it's time to look for new team members.
-
Something like that and its better to a degree now i just also have time to do alot more stuff so im always working on things. I post a lot on cemetech now as well as i'm leaning more and more towards hardware engineering and such and they definitely have a better user base for that. I stay on irc and I am always on that and I post when I need to but its mostly admin stuff lately. I hope to start some calc projects again soon just looking for someone to start a project with other then iambian he has not been around much lately assuming life issues. and i just cant stay motivated
-
Starcraft CSE? :P
-
naaaa
puzzle games and the works the stuff i usually try to work on and never finish lol
