Most parents I have heard talked about on this forum are really against programming.
Poor buttsfredkin found that omnimaga.org was blocked by his parents one day.
Sometimes calc use is discouraged or even constrained.
My parents want me to have the best programming experience I can and to follow my passion. They recently agreed to fork over half the cost of a calculator just in case it would make it better for what I love to do. My parents let me compose and play music all the time, and don't make me. They are very supportive of non-conventionality.
Is this strange?
-
not really, my parents just don't really care what I do,. as long as it doesn't have a negative effect on my studies.
-
Not really. As long as I have all A's they encourage me to do programming stuff. I just don't ever explain my projects to them -- when I explained a project for Ruby I was doing to contribute a low-level parallel type array add-on to the language, my dad flipped out and is now forcing me to do it so that "I look good to colleges". Just do well and try to take programming very seriously (i.e., I try to program 3 hours a day if humanly possible) and prove you're learning things, and you'll be left alone.

sigh...I think my parents want me to become a "well rounded person" and all this other garbage. And yeah, omni's blocked, so I have to use SSL (but mostly just be really sneaky)
-
I think my mom only finds my activities weird, no constrainments whatsoever. She even went as far as meeting Omnimaga members IRL with me :P
-
I want to meet some omniers irl! I wanna see what fisch is like, he seems funny.

yeah! me too. most people here seem really cool.

Ha! well rounded. funny. Yeah, my parents don't like the amount of time I spend programming and on this site either. :P

I only had constraints because my parents thought I was spending too much time on programming and not enough on school ( which admittedly I was not managing my time then constructively ). My last year of High School though till now I've had no real constraints other then having to go help with other stuff/go to school. In fact my parents know that I want to program for a living so they are being very supportive of me learning ( while at the same time trying to help me balance my time with other important matters in life that I shouldn't ignore ).
-
My parents always make me do my school work first, and then allow me to program. Also, they want me to not waste my time doing little projects - they want me to make something no one else has ever done before, something that will make people reading my college application really go "wow". I totally agree with them on this, and I've been thinking of what I could make, but I don't have any ideas :(
My parents made me do violin until last year, allowing me to quit because this year I'm getting a lot more homework.
-
The best thing to make is some library program
-
My mom doesn't like me to constantly be on my calc, but she doesn't have too big a problem with it.
-
My parents don't let me do anything that affects my grade.
Like in 7th grade, they didn't let me date anyone...
-
My parents buy me anything that will help with my programming career, such as VS Pro, Dreamweaver CS5.5, and soon Photoshop O.o and they know that no matter what I do, I seem to always get by with at LEAST a B+, soo...
I also got a car for my birthday last year ;D
I almost always try to pay for things myself, but they almost always never let me.
-
I know right?
I say I need something that's over 100$, and my parents say I will buy it for you but you will have to pay back. Then, when I try to pay back, they say no...
I don't get parents

Lol, exactly! I wanted to pay for my new phone and my mom was like "Okay, but you only have to pay half" on our way there, and after we got it, she said "It's your birthday present." How am I supposed to learn the value of a dollar? honestly, I'm a frivolous (right word?) spender :/

I AM DA GREAT SQUANDERER!!
-
I'm not sure if my parents are aware of my programming stuff or not..
I think my mom might know but she seems to be just kind of neutral about it.
:P

No thanks.

No, I don't really think it's strange. I think you are quite fortunate. :)

Off topic: is your profile pic photo-shopped?

My parents are exactly the same way, Boot2490.
-
Yeah, I always want to buy something and dad says "Wait until your birthday you may get it; I want you to save up for <something big>." Um, I never get it on my brithday, and Dad, I'm only 12 I don't think I need to save up fro a car yet!
EDIT: Sorry for double post. Didn't realize it there. :P
-
i think in the cases where parents are not always supportive of calculator activities is when they already have a strained relation or if someone takes their hobby way too far and it interferes with school, family, etc.
-
Padawan: Most certainly :P
I got a picture of a guy wearing a monocle and then stitched it with a picture of a suit and a picture of a top hat.
Also, do you think I should replace the guy with a picture of me and/or add a pipe or cigarette holder? (Stereotypical righ white guy)
-
No not really. My parents support me with programming. They don't have a fucking clue what I'm saying (well my dad maybe because he used to dabble in it).
Unlike some people here... My parents don't buy me things. If I owe them money, they hound me until I pay them back. For example. When I got my first cell phone. It was $100. I paid half. They paid half. OH WAIT!? A $50 REBATE YOU SAY? Guess who got the rebate? Not me.

Samebull then SirCmpwn and JustCause parents are exceptions. In both cases even when their school activities were not affected at all and they had good grades, parents still disallowed them to code. They just wanted to force their kid into majoring in anything that is not related to electronics. Kinda like in the early 20th century where some families forced their kid to marry with specific people.
In my case my mom was fine with me programming calculator games as long as I did not spend the entire day doing it. She simply wanted me to vary my activities a little, such as spending 2 hours drawing, 1 hour outdoor, 1 hour playing video games and 4 hours coding instead of 8 hours coding, 8 hours drawing or 8 hours playing video games. However a few years later she told me a few times she was amazed at my creativity in reference to my many calc games, despite not understanding how video games works, and liked how I used some of my free time for creative purposes. I guess it helped that my grades were rather good for my future studies, though. The only time I was grounded for a long while was because I spent too much time online and my internet was cancelled completely until moving out, but at that time I often talked less to my mom due to being online too much or took a while to do my chores, so that probably did not help, although I was past 18 when this happened. X.x

i can't say I totally agree with you DJ but I gotta respect someone who genuinely loves what they do so thumbs up for you
