A native English speaker sent me this on Skype to see if I was as good as him in English.
How it works? Check off a word if you're 100% sure of at least a definition of it, if not (like you heard the word but you're not sur what it means) don't check it.
http://testyourvocab.com/
I got an impressive 13700 words (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1052563), not bad for a non-native. The guy who sent me this was rather impressed as he got something like 15500 words.
How did you scored? Be honest! (Also specify if you're native or not.)
-
18,900 - Native
According to some graphs on their blog (http://testyourvocab.com/blog.php), I'm about 1,000 words behind where I should be for 14 years old.
Though this site does admit that the graphs are significantly higher than the average population (SAT scores are significantly higher on average).
I should read more.
-
Wow! It says I know 19,100 words. I had no idea I knew so many words!
I guess it's not too bad for a native speaker. :)
EDIT: Lol. It's actually behind the average for my age. :P
-
Native English speaker. I got a word count of 21,100. This is a pretty interesting little test. :D
-
Is it bad if when I saw the word "toss" the first thing that came into my mind as definition is "Starcraft slang vocabulary defining the protoss race"? O.O
Anyway doing the test now. On first page I didn,t know the entire 3rd column X.x
-
Yeah it begins to get hard starting from the last column of the first page.
-
Ok I finished. http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1052684
7420 words, so I'm at the bottom of the pile for now, although based on other non-native speakers I seem to be in the upper part of the averages.
Note that this test is not 100% accurate and doesn't tell what kind of vocabulary does each people have, though. In my case, for example, a lot of words I know are technology-related, but medical-wise I almost know nothing, while in French, I barely know any technology-related words and I know a bit more medical ones.
-
The only way to be entirely accurate is to ask you for each of the ~300,000 words in the OED.
I did this a while ago, and have forgotten what I got. Newest result is 23,600. (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1052696)
That places me at ~20 years on the graph here. (http://testyourvocab.com/blog/2011-07-25-New-results-for-native-speakers.php#mainchartNative) I fall short of this by 25%. * calcdude grumbles and decides he ought to read more anyway.
DJ, apparently it helps to read, so if you care about your command of English and you have the time, you know what to do :)
-
Oh I read a lot (besides forums/sites). I've read for many years too, although it was mainly video game related stuff as well as actual video game text (such as RPGs). I think my vocabulary is just still kinda limited. It doesn't help that the games I played before were usually japanese and translated to English, meaning they themselves had limited vocabulary in general (or mistranslations)
-

Lol. I can't imagine listing every word I know. I'm the type of person that can't remember the perfect word but remembers its first letter. :P
I really should read more books. :P
-
Apparently I'm 33 (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1052841) in my vocab age. However, I suspect I know somewhat more than that (along with many of the people here) because some portion of my vocabulary has a lot more technical material in it than most people.
EDIT: I fall short of my vocabulary age by 45% :w00t:
-
Hmm. What do all those words mean? :P
I got 10,300 words. SO it's quite ok, I guess for somebody who lives in Belgium.
-
I got 8,070 words. not bad I guess (I am Dutch). (according to a british bus driver: "your english is very good". I was so proud of that comment)
-
20,500 words.
That's a bit misleading, though, as each word can probably mean 3 things depending on context.
-
I clicked everything on. This is the answer: 45,000 WORDS!
WOW, we are all stupid. :P
-
29600! Not bad for 2nd language XD

http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1053446 (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1053446)
WOW! Really good.
-
22,300 words. :D
Slightly below the average though :/
That's misleading because I read more than most people my age and I generally use more complex words especially in emails and such. :3
-
29600! Not bad for 2nd language XD
http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1053446 (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1053446)
hey... same result XD
I'm technically not a native speaker, but I was living in the US since I was 4 :P
-
23000 words
Slightly more than average for my age...
if I would be an native speaker which I'm not :p

and we have the vocabulary of a 36-year old native speaker :D
-
22500 words
A bit more than average for my age as i guessed i may know some special words which appeared.
And an apparent reason why many people are falling short could be that people are getting higher scores than they should be getting (ie: cheating to a certain extent) and this is affecting the average number of words known.
http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1054128
PS: English is my first language, after I "forgot" Mandarin Chinese when I was little
-
20,400
As Netham and calcdude said this result can be very misleading. It appears I am a little bit above average for 17 years.
-
25,100 words. Woot lol
http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1054252
EDIT: According to that, I should be a little over 23...
-
Interesting! Thanks for the link!
-
I know eight words. That's it. Nothing else.
-
Actually "it's" is technically two words, so you know 9. :P
EDIT: Also, your signature says otherwise.
-
13,000 as not native speaker
-
about 2^15. :P
JK i'm not that smart. XD
-
I know. It estimated about 19,000 for me.
-
29600! Not bad for 2nd language XD
http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1053446 (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1053446)
Don't you now live in an english-only place though? I wonder if 2nd language counts when we do or if it's just when you just learned English as a second language?
Also it would be nice to see the people from France do that test. For some reasons I sense that the majority will not even hit 1000 because in France English isn't as important as in places like Quebec where we are surrounded by English states.

Yeah. But I've only lived in USA for like 5 years(and lived in Korea for like 12 years). So I think English still counts as my 2nd language. Also, I think I learned 1/4 of the hard words from hard-core self SAT prep XP
-
I got 19,400. :)

Ah ok I see, I thought you moved to USA like when you were kid.
Where I live we rarely run into English people except on Saturdays or some holidays (such as thanksgiving last monday). If I go to Quebec city, however, there are a lot of them.
I wonder if a lot of people in Ottawa speaks English? Because I'm supposed to go there in Feb.

http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1054458
I got 23,300 words and I am a native speaker. I'm a bit above average for my age. Some of the words didn't even look like they were English! ???
Edit: Why do 7 year-olds know more words than 8 year olds? :P
-
I got 27,500 (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1054525)
what counts as a lot?
-
hmm, it says i have ~34,100
to be fair, i had both latin and greek classes in highschool, and a lot of the words can be figured out as you go from those (things like oneiromancer [although i knew that one already from Neil Gaiman's Sandman :P] and uxorcide).
EDIT: i thought it was just my version, but i went back through and saw that it's the same words every time, so... did anyone else think the number of words with sexual connotations was a bit odd?
-

The second page changes according to your results of the first page. I didn't notice too many on my test. :P
-
oh okay. i must have just had consistent result, then. i was getting things like trollip, lothario, and seamy.
-

Oh, I had the same page, but I didn't know what they meant. :\
-
I'd like to see more of our European members take the test. :D Also, some of you have pretty impressive vocabularies. I'm always looking up words i don't know, but apparently I could stand to branch out quite a bit more. :)
-
Speaking of English, the title should say, "How many English words do you know?"
I know it's really knit-picky. :P
-

lol. :P I figured it could be kept for the lols, but if you guys want it changed I guess it can be.

I don't even know any English, why I'm here? I mean, oh, thanks for correcting me.
Edit: Wat engrish? Rofl.
-
Also, it's "nit-picky", not "knit-picky" ;D
-

Nice. Joke is on me. :P

Thank u come again~ *Chinese accent*

-
Hey I got a 45000 when I just clicked everything. XD
-
:D
-
I don't know how reputable this is, then... If clicking everything returns two different results, I dunno.
Also, I got 25100, but I am a native speaker. I found that my knowledge of french helped a lot, too.
-
No matter what I do, I can't seem to get it over 45,000. XD
-
Their dictionary includes 45000 words, so the score you get is out of 45000.
-

ooh that makes sense.
-
hmm I got 24,000 words. I'd say fairly good for my age. What I would like to see is a french version of this so I could test how well three years of french classes have taught me.
-
I did the test again. it appears that I learned 1,390 words in less then 24 hours lol.
Yesterday: 8,070 words
Today: 9,460 words
XD
-
I on the other hand forgot some... XP
-
10 000 words, which appears to be the number of words in a standard dictionary, and it's above avarage for a not native speaker of my age.
-
I should test it again. Some of the words were unfairly old. I know a lot of newer obscure words.
-
im a native english person, and i only got 13,900 words? ???
dang i feel dumb lol
edit: http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1056802

this is unreliable :P
38300...
one of the words was brobdingnagian :D

Uh what
-
one of the words was brobdingnagian :D
who the heck would ever need to use a word like that?
-
No matter what I do, I can't seem to get it over 45,000. XD
XD
I know a way!
Create a new one and beat it :P
-
maybe, but that would take too much work...
(I like having everyone else do all the work for me.) ;D
-
Lol ^^^

exactly... :P

-
I found another website with a word quiz! :)
http://dynamo.dictionary.com/
It's weird; I scored higher on this test. (31,571)
-
lol I there was only one word I didn't know on that test at the college level. :P
I got 45,586 words XD
-
Using the new test, I got 45,588, which I am significantly more happy with.
-
45914
a much better quiz, though :D
-
The scaling of this test is different, both tests are only an approximation though. I'm not sure if it really matters if I got 45000 or 45500, 45000 words is pretty darn smart.
The question arises not whether it is "better" but whether it is more realistic.
-
I think the first is more realistic. If you have only four meanings to choose from you can sometimes find out the correct answer without knowing the word.
In the first test I got 5970 (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1075023) words, in the second 15000.
-
I agree, now that i've seen the second test. Multiple choices aren't always a good way to find out the number of words you know.
Only 10 words too. and it asks you to take it again! for a higher score
-
I took the first again and didn't have exactly the same words, but my result remained almost the same.
I also took again the second and this time it says I knew 25000 words, whereas the first time it was only 15000, not really a constant result ;)
-
http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1075292
"Your total vocabulary size is estimated to be: 28,800 words"
Hmm, not bad.
-
In the first test I got 5970 (http://testyourvocab.com/?r=1075023) words, in the second 15000.
I got 15 000 too after getting 7 280 in the first one :D
(But I'm French, I'm excused :P)
-
I'm excused, too, because I've only had English at school for three years XD
-
Well I did the test again and I got 24400 words, higher than last time. Strange. I thought I was being more honest this time, selecting words that I actually knew a certain meaning of because the first time I chose some words I had a half-meaning of. I've gotten smarter!
-
:w00t:
I became smarter!
I gots...
10 XD

Related and fun.

20,011..
I got stupider... :(
-
I don't think the test at: http://dynamo.dictionary.com/ is very accurate, it doesn't seem that thorough. It rates me at knowing 45,523. The first test (from http://testyourvocab.com/) put it at 21,100.
