Title: Inactive, but active.
Post by: Netham45 on August 07, 2007, 08:53:00 pm
You will probbally notice a decrease in my activity, my network card decided to give for some reason, and unless I can get it fixed, I am stuck connecting to the internet through my phone. It's fast and all, but when I have my PC going through it's internet, it uses a large amount of data, and I only have 5mb free a month, after that, it's $.05 per KB transfered. I will try to log onto IRC, but I can almost guarintee that I am going to be inactive on the forums until I can get a new network card. It's just too expensive.

aw that sucks man, I hope you can get it fixed soon. Don't you have one on another PC though? Either way, I was really worried why you were connecting to irc using phone, knowing it costs you money when i read irc logs x.x, i was afraid your parents took your internet down or something :/confused.gif. Anyway I hope you get a cheap one soon

That sucks. If you have a desktop, then I have a few suggestion for you from Newegg.

If you don't need wireless, there are plenty of network cards on Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156139 caught my attention the most. If you also do a lot of online gaming, whether it is as simple as MapleStory to as complex as playing Halo 2 (and soon, maybe even Halo 3) online, and you have plenty of money to spend, there is also http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833342001 network card that not only adds networking capabilities, but also adds more RAM and clock speed just for online stuff (so playing a game online will result in a better framerate and less lag than playing the same game offline). In fact, one guy actually claimed that at a large LAN party, his computer's ping was better than the server's!
However, finding a wireless network card is a bit of a problem (on Newegg, that is). If you want a really cheap one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833158017. But, if you want a faster card with less cable clutter and have a bit more bucks to spend, there is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127218 that is currently on sale.

well, I do have multiple computers, but I had a subnet in my room and they all used that one network card as a gateway.
also, I'm going to wait until I can go to the library to look on newegg, saves money.

do you plan to not have internet for a long while though? If so, then I would cancel your plan with ISP if there was no prior engagement until you get a working network card again, to save more money

A new NIC isn't too expensive, hope you can get it replaced soon.

Probably, because it's working right now. Hehe, I guess it really needed that "sleep", as I had not turned off my computer for longer than 5 minutes since three months. %)rolleyes2.gif

Ok, found out it wasn't my network card, it was my router. I've already ordered a new one, but yesterday, it refused to even talk to my cable modem, so until it gets here, I will be rather inactive, unless I can manage to fix it.

seems it's up now, but it isn't running well.
can someone who knows how please do an 'nmap' of netham45.dyndns.org and post all the entries from the 400-5000 range? I would be very thankful.

Ahh, now I can relate to router problems!!!! >:0 I have this gay-a** wireless router/dsl modem combo piece of s*** that came free with verizon DSL at my house. It sucks more balls than anyone can imagine, playing games over wifi means major lag spike hacks, p2p traffic means router crashing hacks, and just general all around suckage. I would buy a new one, but I only live there during the summer anymore and it costs moneys which i don't have. :Ptongue.gif
