I have been doing an online Latin 1 course this year with Northwestern University. I was wondering Has anyone else taken this course or a course like it?
We are working with Ecce Romani(Look Romans for you who do not know Latin) 1 as out textbook.
I personally have not enjoyed this at all and most people at my school who are also taking it agree. I will definitely not be going onto latin 2 next year.
I have voted it is evil
EDIT: I changed my vote to its not enjoyable

Ego dico linguam latinam! :) Well kind of...
I tried teaching myself classical Latin back when I was in high school. The book I bought was Wheelock's Latin, because it seemed to be the standard textbook for teaching Latin. Looking in retrospect, the Lingua Latina series is probably the better buy since the whole book is written in Latin (even the directions), thus forcing you to develop your own intuition of how to read Latin.
I've now forgotten how to decline nouns and conjugate verbs. I kind of still remember some vocabulary. If I took the time to review, I could probably pick up it quickly.
I think studying Latin would be more fun if you learning it as a hobby. It's practically impossible to find someone who you can speak Latin with and taking a course would just probably wane your interest. Some stuff written in Latin is pretty cool. The Aeneid is probably the coolest story ever that doesn't have an ending (the guy died before he could write the ending to the epic, but it's still cool).

I don't know the vocab that well yet but I do know most of the grammar rules. I did it instead of Spanish this year because I wanted foreign language and Spanish was during my band period. There is only one Spanish 1 period at my school everyone is already in Spanish 3/4.
I have no idea how to pronounce the Latin currently because books aren't good for teaching you how to pronounce things.
The one good thing for me with latin is that because I'm so far behind(10-12 chapters) my parents told me they'd get me a laptop(uberGraphX maybe) if I get done before it is all due. So I have 14.5 chapters to go 2 tests a final and a midterm and 4 reviews due by June 4

I'm taking Latin IV right now, so obviously I don't think it's evil :P
The hardest part of any language is acquiring a sizable vocabulary.
Learning any language is also, like above, a lot of work, so don't get upset if your first experience is awful :)
Good luck!
Also, I'll bump a Latin-language thread that's rather old for anyone interested in the language or writing in it.

I changed my vote to it wasn't enjoyable because I really only saw it as bad for a while. most of the other time it just was a task I had to get done
What kind of Latin class are you doing?
-
I'm taking it as a regular, not-online class. Not sure if you meant anything else.
Now to bump the thread!
-
What books do you use?
-
Ah, that's what you meant. Silly me :P
We used Jenney's First Year Latin for years I-IV (:P) and in IV we also use some book for Ovid's Metamorphoses.
Edit: I'll just create a new topic, the old one's in Spam and I don't want to move it.

I have not taken Latin myself, but all of the people who I know who take Latin (quite a few) seem to enjoy themselves in the class. (Nevertheless, I have also heard countless stories that nothing is accomplished in the class :P).
-
I never took Latin, but it's just as well since if I did I probably would have forgotten it just like the other languages I took in those days. I didn't get an appreciation for languages until recently, and I can't exactly be taking language classes now as a CS graduate student. Occasio exivit :(

I have had Latin for 2 years, then stopped it. I hate Latin. Greek FTW. :hyper:
@apcalc: Yeah, I hear the same stories all the time lol :P
-
We use Ecce Romani too. :D
I love it. ;) Although the stories in the First book are terrible. XD
-
LATIN?!!? How could I think about Latin when Spanish is making my brain melt? English is fine enough for me.
-
I don't like the book or the schedule for it but the language isn't too bad.
The tests are killer for me because they are largely on the vocab
