Post by: calcdude84se on April 20, 2011, 10:35:39 pm: Different things work best for different people. My teacher likes to recommend flashcards, which help a lot of people. There are lots of other techniques. You can associate a word with a similar-meaning derivative, for example.

Also I would love if my school actually gave latin courses. Since Vatican II, Latin is not really useful anymore, so they stopped giving latin courses here.

Machine translation in general is fraught with error. I sometimes use Google Translate to read posts on TI-Bank (French -> English) and have seen some pretty ridiculous translations, e.g.:

Original post: La CX n'est pas livré avec son couvercle
Translation: The CX is bundled with its lid

I can forgive the "cover"/"lid" thing, maybe "couvercle" can mean either of those, but... "n'est pas" -> "is"? Really?

Post by: thomatos on April 22, 2011, 03:55:32 am: I agree that google translate is bad, but in your example, the wrong translation comes from a french mistake, it should be 'livrée', and not 'livré', if you try to translate that, the negation is kept ;) ...

And I cannot speak/write latin, so I will not post here again ;D (Hopefully I can read & understand some sentences, as it's quite close to French =p ).

These mean the same thing. Asking Google Translate to take Latin to English gives this:

I could have done, because these things
And from the original English to Latin:
Quote
feci haec quod potui
Which translates correctly back to English (though it originally had "propter" for "quod", which is wrong grammatically.)
So, using it to understand Latin fails, and you need some knowledge of Latin to get it to work in the other direction.

Quisquamne hic est qui Latine scribere possit?
