Please vote in the poll if you have an idea of how. Base yourself on previous school year(s), maybe. I do not know how is the school system in USA but I remember people got lots of tests such as ACT/SAT or something at that time.
I am asking so hopefully I don't move the site to a new host on an extremly busy period, causing people with lots of free time to visit the site to not even be able to frequent it as much as they want due to downtimes. :P And October seems like a good time to do it, noticing that almost every year, we had less activity in October than in September/November

I am not going to be busy on any week in particular, BUT i did get an awesome job at the local theme park scaring the crap out of people so i wont be on any later than 5 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays D:
-
Wut? People PAY for getting scared the crap out of them, and other people GET PAID for scaring the crap out of those people.......
-
You all better be free on the 20th for my birthday.
-
Oh, I forgot to give a reason for my absence: I've got math exams the twentieth and the twenty-seventh. (sorry Netham :P)
-
The 17th is my birthday.
-
In my case it would be the first week, but it will most likely be before the 4th, which is why I did not include Oct 1st to 4th. Afterward there will be the contest ending.

Lol the money they pay has to go somewhere :P Its quite a thriving business ;D

Hey that's my birthday too...
-
I have a competition thingy for school on the 13th, so that is probably going to be my busiest week.
-
That said, busy or not it would be nice for the staff if they could leave their IRC client minimized on their computer or something, so the chan remains with some ops. Last year we almost lost #omnimaga completly because only |miobot had ops as well as aksnowman, who was idle for days. During that month a lot of people did not frequent IRC as much
-
Thats not hard for me to do.
/me goes to mibbit...

One issue is that often, people are not allowed to let their comp run all night, thanks to their parents, so by 10-11 PM they logout.
-
standardized tests are awesome stuff
-
That one is kind of an issue to me. :(
I have a laptop, so I really can't let it on all night. I have broken several laptops in the past due to overheating/leaving on too long (although, they were HPs... :P)
-
Yeah it's better if you got a desktop or something. Otherwise it's better to not take any chance. I hear too much about overheating laptops.
My concern is that when there are snowstorms in October or very windy/rainy weather, power goes out every 5 minutes or so over here, so I myself can't even stay connected all the time.

I second that. :P

Third :P And the PSAT is Oct 13/16 this year (0o15/0o20).
-
O_o
I forgot about PSATs, now I have two things on the 13th (I guess it is unlucky :P)
-
Yep, fun :P And just wondering: How long'll Omni be down (approx.)?
-
What are standarized tests for, btw? I always wondered why in USA you guys had exams this early in the school year. Over here, we have some small class-specific tests every week or so, but the exams are at the end of each term, meaning we get exams in mid-december, Easter and mid-June. The bulk of them is in June. Besides that sometimes there are a bunch of projects/essays that have deadlines ending around Halloween and Easter, but on some years, there are barely any. For college tests, they are usually in April/May.
As for Omnimaga it will most likely be down sporadically, mostly at night, but in the worst cases, it should be a day or two. There are occasions where a lot of stuff like downloads or attachments might be missing and some features disabled temporary. The database will be the last thing to move, as well as music files/videos.
-
PSATs are like "practice" SAT tests. They help prepare your for the actual SAT. Also, you can win some good scholarships if you do good on them.
SATs are required for entrance into just about every college in the US. Many schools will only allow you to enter if your SATs are above a certain, pretty high score.
AP tests are tests to earn college credit.
All of these tests are run by the "College Board," which is, essentinally, a big company that makes up lots of tests. :)
-
Ah ok, thanks for clarifying. Over here, besides the college tests, all that matters is your final average. For example, for Multimedia Integration Technique, only 50 students were allowed and I managed to get in with a 80% average. There were also credits but they weren't used a much it seems, except if you failed an entire school year.
-
Yeah, here the final average matters, as well as whatever major tests you chose to take (like the SAT or ACT). They're all optional, but a lot of colleges look for the scores.
-
I'll be busier/on more based on homework that I cannot predict. Thus, I did not vote in the poll. :)

Btw it's in my goals to make sure the downtime is not too long, like UTI last Fall or Spring for example. I want to avoid the site going down for like entire days. The first moves will involve copying files over the new host. If for any reason database errors occurs after the move, I'll be asking for help on SMF website, but the omnimaga.org domain name will still redirect to the old host. Once it's certain everything is working properly, I'll temporary make Omni private for maintenance, so nobody posts/register during the move, redo one more database backup (preventing any data rollback following the move) then put the new database at the new location.
Prior any move, I need to learn how to use a VPS, though :P (and maybe some Linux stuff).
If, in any case, hosting move would completly fail and it became clear it would be impossible to switch to anything else than the hosting type we got right now, then we would remain on 1and1, but there are huge chances that TIMGUL would merge with Omnimaga, or that it is dropped from the server if that fails too.
-
I am noticing that activity has dropped considerably compared to last week. Same for traffic. is everyone busy with non-calc stuff or something? If so, I might simply attempt at performing a site move before the weeks stated in the poll above, since it will not affect more people anyway.
-
Hmm, maybe you could do that and extend the contest voting for however many days were lost? Lots of activity this weekend, though...
-
Nah actually the activity is considerably lower this weekend than last one (and last week).
-
Well, okay, in that case, I personally wouldn't mind (homework and all that x.x), even if it means pushing the contest results :P
-
Well the downtimes wouldn't be too long I think, anyway. In fact, what I think that might happen is sporadic downtimes once or twice a night, followed by a longer one, where everything important would move.
