That reminds me, there was a topic where we could post our computer desktop area but I should maybe post some pics of my room at one point, although my closet is a huge mess so I might avoid that. X.x (Although that's to expected since closets are all we have to store things we don't use often here. X.x)

I got something similar somewhere. However, it's smaller and is from Axe 0.2.0, plus the command list I printed was version 0.0.5 I think.

Lol nice guys :D That makes mine feel very empty, although it's because most of our stuff is in the living room. We have almost 100 video games scattered everywhere, if not more, ranging from NES to Xbox 360 passing by a box full of GB/GBA/DS games.

Please excuse the parallax errors. I was taking a very quick panorama.

And here's my collection of Commodore equipment in the corner:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/abbrev/cave-corner.jpg
In the stack I have a C128 at the bottom, a C64 in the middle, and a C16 at the top. I have two 1541 floppy drives (only one shown here), one 1571 floppy drives, and a 1802 color monitor. I have other Commodore peripherals not shown here too, such as joysticks, a printer, a Koalapad, a tape drive, and paddles. And, of course, lots of floppy disks. :)

My wife is the musician. She can play guitar (not very well :P), flute, and oboe, and I think also the piano.

I can only play CD's and MP3 players (and the piano, but very very little). :D

THEY'RE MINE! YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM! :)

My family's had that C64 since I was a child. I learned BASIC on it when I was 6, so I'm never going to give it up, or let it down! I won't run around or desert it either.

@Sir good thread, enlightening pics. :P
@RCfreak: Nice pcs!, nice mess. :P
@Eeems: I'd like to see the old Z80 machine. :D
@Cristop: <3 The stack of commodores. :D

As for my cave, it's in a state of quantum flux out of order atm as I just moved from one bedroom in the house to a bigger one. As of now there is still a bunch of junk in here that isn't mine. If I post pics it'll be in a week or two when the aforementioned "junk" has been moved into it's new home and things are back in order. ;)

I can't do pics, but I'll give a narrated tour of my room :D

Upon entering, the thing you'd notice first is the electric violin and its amplifier 8). Behind that lies my viola (traditional acoustic) and a music stand. On the music stand is an arrangement of JerryC's Canon Rock transcribed for violin. On the floor are bits of random sheet music, among them the Goldenrod City theme and Bach's 6th Brandenburg concerto. Next to the amplifier is a mess of cables including my phone and gameboy chargers. Looking back behind you towards the door, you'll see a couple of wooden 2x4 boards. I don't know how they got there. To the right, you see Pokemon Yellow on the floor. Further right is my closet. It's a veritable mess, some notable items include my boy scout uniform and OA sash along with several pairs of swim suits. Turning back around (standing in front of the closet) we can get a good look at my bed. In front of it lies a few textbooks and a large mess of papers. Further inspection reveals them to be a mix of Ash:Phoenix documentation and guitar music. On my beside shelf you can find coins, a wallet, a playbill, Pokemon Sea Blue Edition, a knife my ipod and calc, an alarm clock, light, and lots of manga. To the right is a little nook area semi hidden from the rest of the room. Here is a couch with lots of pillows (chill area), and my desk. My desk chair is stacked full of college spam mail. The drawers next to my desk are overflowing with papers. In the corner you can find swim caps, goggles, and my guitar (acoustic). On my desk we find a myriad of art supplies and a rubix cube.

And that's my cave :)

Ah I love the greeny desktops and I have less icons to see more green.

I need a new mousepad to be green to, I really want a green one, don't you think it'd go right here?

I have lots of icons on my desktop. It works as my dumping ground for things I don't know where to put. They usually only stay for a day or two though.

I don't use a mousepad because I have a trackball mouse(I love it) I do own a King Tut one though which I use when I switch to using a regular mouse(not often) The green mousepad would definitely fit right in. You should see if there is a linux mint one for you to get. If not isn't there a site that lets you customize your own mousepad.

So... I just moved in a week ago to my new apartment.  The walls are hideously white and boring however and I'm not allowed to put nails in the walls so I can't put up any artwork.  Not that I have any anyway...  So instead, I've been working on this.  I've only done 2 so far, but eventually all 4 walls will be covered in them:

Title: Re: Post Your Cave

megaman v protoman would go nicely on a wall
Title: Re: Post Your Cave
Post by: Quigibo on July 03, 2011, 05:25:30 am
That's probably too big.  The entire height of the wall is only about ~28 post-its so unless I can find smaller ones, I'm going to be limited to tiny sprites.  Other things I was thinking of were pacman, a tetris game, and space invaders, but they don't have to be video games.  I've seen (http://www.digitalbusstop.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Post-It-Elvis.jpg) some other (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p5mAt9Tofmg/S4OrrTrK8_I/AAAAAAAAANY/pPM7j5LN2xg/s320/post-it-note-mural-300x300.jpg) really cool (http://www.digitalbusstop.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Post-It-Hand.jpg) artwork.

Is Linux fast? (possible biased question)
Does it support things like skype?
Could I still run Ti Connect and Ti-Nspire Student software?
Does it run .exe files?
Does Google Chrome/FireFox run fine on it?
From installing it, would I keep all my currently installed files?
I probably have more questions, but I can't think of any :P

It was pretty easy to dual boot with it, there should probably be some documentation for mint or whatever distro you choose

Wow, any tutorials out there for all that? :I
For the installing part, depending on the distro you use most of it's automated so the most technical thing you have to do is move a slider determining how much memory you want to give each OS :P  This (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot) should help, just switch out 'ubuntu' w/ distro of choice for the most part.
Also backups.

For TiLP, this (http://ourl.ca/12289/231548) has worked well for me ;)

Regarding the distros most people start out with ubuntu or mint afaict. links and stuff (http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major)

Streetwalker: Yeah, its still a mess! I probably have the worst looking 'cave' here :( Nothing matches in my room, there is not one piece of furniture in my room that I have bought, now that I think about it, its all stuff that people just give to me and I just put it around everywhere. I have 3 desks but I'd have to sit too close to the screen and my neck would be killing me. When I move out of here though, it's all staying! I'm thinking of getting a table and cutting the legs in half so that I don't have to look up all the time.

It's actually half solved, I need to learn how to do the last layer now. :P
Also, how do you keep it that clean O.O
Mom. She forces me to.

Also :
-I use the sponge for soldering.
-The lock in drawer #2 is hackable in 10secs flat so it's worthless.
-I'd like my cable mess to be messier.

Hmmm... The sponge is to clean up the tip of my iron because that oxidizes quicly when hot.

NES!!! *yay*

I mostly play kirby on it because it's easy to pick up and play. My other games do not have a save-feature and you'd have to start from the beginning every time you start. I should get zelda or another game that can save.

in some cases, be careful because these games are very old and use a backup battery to retain saves when not in use. While batteries are supposed to last several decades, in some rare cases they die in 3-15 years. For example, my copy of Final Fantasy III no longer saves and my Terranigma repro cart and Secret of the Stars saves often vanishes if I don't play for a few days or turn the power ON/OFF too rapidly (such as when the game won't start and I have to mess around with the cartridge in the slot)

The battery can be changed but you have to be very careful with soldering or electrical tape, because you don't want to kill a $100+ game x.x

This still requires soldering or electrical tape (where do I even find these tools in my city anyway?) and very good hands for electronic manipulation. It's not like replacing a calc battery where you just remove some screws then replace the battery, you actually have to break something that holds the battery there without bending it too much, detach the original battery from its soldering, put in a new one, solder it back (or use electric tape) and stuff. Some people claim it's easy, but if you have never done any soldering, are scared of it or just don't have good hands to manipulate small electronics (I myself often broke 9V battery connectors while trying to remove a battery), is it worth the risk of permanently damaging a $60+ game?

I heard some people wanted to use regular tape, but apparently many people advised them against it because it's a bad idea. I also heard that some people just bend the things to hold the battery in place, but the connection isn't very solid and this leads to some random save losses when you are too rough with the cartridge.

That's how you get better at them :P

Also, it depends which mario game you are talking about. I think the first Super Mario Bros. is kind of difficult simply because of the gravity. It makes the gameplay feel a bit strange to me. SMB 2 and SMB are pretty easy IMO. :)

Yeah SMB1 physics were just more realistic, while SMB2/3 were more lax to make things easier. However, newer SMB games are far more easier. In NSMB2 for the Nintendo 3DS, when I finished World 1, I had 75 lives O.O . It seems like they made newer Mario games easier in general so that kids can pick them up easier without tearing down walls like we did back in the days with our NES gamepads. :P

I really need to post my cave too as well, but it isn't that impressive since the calcs are hard to see (lack of storage here) and the most interesting stuff (the SNES, NES and Atari games, for instance) are mainly under the couch inside a container in the living room. (I actually kept the boxed games more visible, though, and the N64 games are outside because my storage container ran out of space. >.<

Now my bedroom pretty much has my computer with several calcs hidden behind the monitor (some elsewhere on the desktop), some Detroit Red Wings media guides, some books I'm not done reading (especially Tintin stuff), a bunch of movies that don't fit elsewhere, some music CDs, my nice yellow/beige SNES and a Nintendo 64 :P.

What I need is something like this O.O

Right now several of my older consoles are on the carpet because they don't fit anywhere else and I'm afraid to use them too much because of lack of ventilation >.<

That's a pretty neat shelf system. Also, totally agree about the newer Mario games. For me they've been a huge disappointment due to how easy they are. :/ I should get around to posting my cave, but it's way too messy atm. XD

Yeah it's super easy to grind for lives in newer mario games. These days there are so many 1ups in those games it's almost inpossible to not beat them eventually. If you do happen to run out: go to world 1.1 and grind for some more until your live count reaches comfort levels. And what is the point of having so many lives? When you get a gameover you are just sent back to your last save which is not a large punishment compared to older games. Modern gamers are more likely to give up when they see game over because they think it stands for "This game has ended." What it really means is:"Session since your last save over. Try again from where you was 1 minute ago?"

The problem in NSMB2, though, is that to gain lots of lives, you don't even need to grind. You can just gain lots of coins effortlessly. I actually don't mind if to get lives, you need to solve some puzzles, access some harder to reach platforms, etc, like in NSMB1 and Wii, but now it got so ridiculous that they might as well do like Demon's Crest and remove the life system altogether. :P

The games are all great, though. I enjoy them a lot and yes there are challenging stages where I laugh at my fails then have to retry 12-15 times, I guess it's just that they now focus on the challenge of finding every star coins and to 100% the game and make the game easier for kids (since nowadays kids starts playing games at 3-5 instead of 8-9), or to let people have fun together laughing at their fails, rather than trying to get as far as possible. But yeah, if someone really wants a recent Mario game that is challenging to even beat at all, he should get Super Mario Galaxy 2, else he might have to stick to older games.

That said, for older people, it's not like SMB3 and World were that hard either, though. In SMB3 it's harder to get lives, but almost every stage are easy unless you are stoned or drunk and in SMW you just constantly find lives. I never actually had a Game Over in SMW1. The first SMB was unforgiving, though.

Also Super Mario 64 holds the distinction of making it possible to die outside stages (if you try) :P

The oscilloscope is my dad's old work scope, but now that he has a new digital one, I've kind of taken this one over.
It's actually against a wall in my basement, but now that I look at it, it does look like a hallway :/. The exit sign is there because the previous owners had a business in the house, and no one ever removed it. I'm not even sure if it works.

Depends what games they play. For much, much older games even the Pentium MMX machine is sufficient. I'll build a really nice Core i7 machine once I get a job. But when Windows 98 is a typical system requirement, it isn't worth spending the money on one yet. I'm not too much of a gamer.

Note that it misses A LOT of stuff, though, such as the SNES and Nintendo 64 on the other side of the bedroom that I have yet to move to my living room, the mess in my closet and a small 4:3 LCD TV (yes, those exists). There's also a few books on another desk to the right, as well as a Sega Game Gear (the pic has an Atari Lynx in it). :P

Now I bet you new generation of Internet users have no clue what's that round device for in the middle (well, at least the front part)... <_<

Now I bet you new generation of Internet users have no clue what's that round device for in the middle (well, at least the front part)... <_<

Yeah, I mean the boombox, and the following vid applies to many people around 13-17 nowadays :P

But again, first of all, they forgot the part about needing AA batteries and when I talk about cassettes some people brings up betacam and 8-track :P And to be fair, some walkmans had built-in speakers too :P
Title: Re: Post Your Cave
Post by: Hayleia on May 28, 2014, 01:24:57 am
Haha ! I love the one bashing the iPad saying that the walkman is better :P
But seriously, I feel old now seeing I had all the answers like "it's a walkman", "you need a cassette", "you need headphones" and they didn't :P
Also, I don't see why they complain about it not playing music without headphones plugged in. Except to annoy other people in public transportation, who listens to music with embedded speakers ? But I mean, who listens with it seriously, like who can enjoy music with the quality given with embedded speakers ?
Title: Re: Post Your Cave
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 28, 2014, 01:31:48 am
Yeah true, plus it's not true that you couldn't run with a walkman on, because those headphones would remain on your head, unlike those small earbuds that comes with ipods nowadays which always fall off your ears. And walkmans had that plastic thing behind to tie it to your pants, so you could still run/walk without holding it (although it was a little annoying).

During my hi school days I actually stuck with walkmans for a while longer for that last reason alone, since CD-based walkmans were just too bulky to fit in my pockets, lacked any plastic tie to stick it to my pants and tracks kept skipping even with anti-shock on.

Thanks. It's not much really, though, since my computer is pretty standard. THe most notable part is the calc collection, the rest of the interesting stuff being in the living room (and it's a mess there because I lack enough room to put all game consoles in >.<)

Also, back on the whole technology thing discussed earlier, it's incredible how things elvolved. Back in 2004, a 128 MB USB stick costed $400 here and I worried it might force me to drop out of school prematurely due to eventually being required to buy one as replacement to iOmega zip disks. Also, I still have an Omnimaga backup from late 2004 that is stored on 7 separate floppy disks.

Also, just to show how much technology elvolved, just take a look at how much the user RAM on Z80 calcs have increased over the last 15 years! Oh wait...

I have a RAM card from 1995 (my birthyear) taken from a ThinkPad... 4... MB...
And now let's take a look at my biggest USB Key. 20€ and 16 Gigs. (Sony and USB 3.0, that explains the price)
We hae SXC card which are a little bigger than a fingernail and contains more than 64 GB!

I can't take pics so I'll describe it.
Floor: A TI-83+, V200, Silver link cable, and Kerm's book, programming the TI-83+/84+
Bed: the standard bed stuff and a light for late night programming
Bookshelf: A ton of Chinese books that I don't read that much (I finished all the good ones)

I omit the rest. it's too tidy to describe (except the closet, which is stuffed with random stuff)

I'm moving soon so i can't really get pics...
I'll try to get pics when I move... In August

BTW I'm in middle school (only) so I have no control over any tech in my house except for 2 calcs...

why so many comps?
I'm not usually at my desk (mostly on my laptop (not the one in the picture (not that one either))) so it has mostly computers that people have given to me. PentiumII (leftmost desktop of the group on the desk) does just about everything poorly, and I use it almost entirely for IRC. It doesn't use much power (and it is going to use a lot less after its rebuild), and it is pretty convenient to use. It has Windows 98SE, 2000, XP, and 7 in quadboot; it runs legacy software when needed. My sub-gaming desktop in the middle actually has a longer boot-to-desktop time and longer time to get to IRC than PentiumII, but is at least an order of magnitude faster when it comes to things like video games. The rightmost desktop (you'll hear me refer to it as the CVDesktop) has 1.5 TB of storage, so it handles most of my network storage; uptime is above 99.8%. PentiumII handles the rest, storing less important things like schoolwork and old versions of my calculator software. The laptop on top of the desktops runs my IRC bouncer and CVBot, also above 99.8% uptime. If I'm truly doing two things at once that require significant (my standards aren't high, web browsing falls under this category) processing power, I use the Sun Ultra 20 occupying the left half of the smaller desk. It isn't connected to the KVM switch, and thus has its own setup. It's also convenient if I have a friend or someone that needs to use one of my computers. The docked laptop on the right side of the smaller desk is rarely used, it serves as a backup for CVBot in case the hard drive in the primary laptop dies again.

tl;dr I like computers.
Title: Re: Post Your Cave
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 01, 2014, 11:20:57 am
I have two computers and my bro got three, but one of my computer won't power up anymore (and I think its hard drive is dead), while my bro just replaced his older computers due to games not running well on them and he is unsure if they are still 100% functional (I know I wouldn't ever connect them directly to mine because he often browsed warez/file sharing sites before and got lots of viruses. >.<)

I might ask him if I can turn one into an emulator or something eventually.

Also CVSoft I thought your main computer was just a cluster of 100 modded TI-81s? O.O

You know it is time to re-do your cable management if you find a rubiks cube in your cables...

Spoiler For lengthy story:
First I had to remove all cables, monitors, raspberry/banana pis, routers and everything. And then I extended the knex thing I use for my monitors to stand on so that it can hold all three well.

Next I put the monitors on it and tested where the cables would be, so that I could make the cables run inside of the knex thingy, to make them invisible.
Here you can see some cables poking out:

I also made it where I added multiple platform thingies underneath so that i can easily fit multiple things in one segment, here you can see my external HDD, the router, a banana pi and a raspberry pi:

You can kinda see the cables running inside of the knex structure right here:

Here is some audio stuff:

In total I pulled as many cables as possible through the knex structure, also organizing which kind of cable runs where etc. I am very pleased with the result as all the cables become next to invisible!

This is the finished setup!

Total time spent on this is all day yesterday, hehe.
