I made this for school and it's going to be entered into a contest on CBC, so tell me what you think.
-
When I try extracting it an error is popping up. Sorry :(
-
Oh, that might be the compression method x.x try using 7zip to extract it. I can't upload a new version off the comp now :(
-
Hmmm ok. I can try that in a bit, I need to start my AP Physics homework. I'll check it out later though :)
-
ok, I was able to get back on the comp, try this one.
-
I think it's good; it portrays its message in a way that will definitely get your attention.
-
thanks! :)
any criticisms on how I did it?
-
It's good. Would've been really cool if you could have like made it change while drinking it (like live :P). Short, simple, and to the point. :D
-
yeah I wish I had the live one...but no luck...
-
Hmmm...there are a couple ways you could possibly do it live. I'd have to think through my methods though haha.
-
well I didn't have a video camera so... :(
-
Oh, that would be a good reason not to do it. That sucks.
-
Wow nice message, and I kinda agree with this. I wonder if they'll show it, it might make some people wake up.
I hope you win
-
Thanks! I think they most likely will.
I hope I do too! I get $1000 in gift cirtificates to retailers/online book stores if I do :p
edit: btw, in case you are wondering, the girl in the video is my little sister.
-
I like it :) I've made an advertisement or two for school, but i never submited anything to a contest. Good Luck!
-
My only fear, though, is that TV stations soemtimes won't do the propaganda thing, because they censor some truths x.x
I hope this could pass.
-
Well since the contest is for propaganda, this probably will go through.
-
yeah maybe. I guess the best thing is to make it for something else than 911 :P
-
Good luck Eeems! I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I hope I can soon. ;D
-
nice does get the point to you
although i agreed it would better if it was a video
-
I was able to watch it. :)
It get's the point across nicely.
However, I also think it would be better as a movie. Good luck Eeems! ;D

-
Congrats!!!!! :O
-
Congratulations!! $1000... wow!
-
Now you can buy every single TI calculator models on ebay
/me runs
-
Lol, well first is buying a laptop off of my brother, and then buying something nice for Amy....but who knows :p
-
I hope this will solve your comp issues (parents not letting you use theirs x.x) unless they decide to limit your time on your very own comp too?
-
Well they will want me to be responsible with my time...so I probably won't be on that much more...but I will be able to install things now :p
-
Ah I guess that's still cool, though. Plus I think you're turning 18 soon, right? They would no longer be allowed to decide what you are allowed to install on your PC either
-
awsome dude thats great to here XD
(what os you getting with it ??)
-
COngratulations! Wow 1000$? Thats totaly awesome! You're going to like having your own computer, i bought my own and i don't know how i ever lived without it ^^
-
Yeah, 18 next year.
I'm going to have xp on one side with 25% of the HD and some flavour of Unix on the other with the rest. Any suggestions on which I should get?
-
Hm, why not 7? For the UNIX, I could suggest Linux Mint (if you are n00b at Linux) or Ubuntu. Arch could be a good choice too.
-
I would suggest 7 too if it's a good computer. Don't get Vista. XP is nice too, but I wouldn,t be surprised if MS stopped providing security updates soon. For 7 just be warned you may have driver issues to cope with if you get the 64 bit version. I myself had some before TI-Nspire Link Software was updated for Windows 7
-
Well I would get 7 but my brother has a xp disk and it's only a single core computer. What's the difference between Linux mint, ubuntu and arch btw? And I am kind of a unix newbie, but I learn fast at that kind of thing.
-
Oh ok, if you had a 7 disk thenyou might have been able to run it fine with special effects disabled, but now go for XP I guess. For Linux you better ask Miotatsu, Will_W, Juju or Tribal since they're Linux users.
-
hmm, I can try to answer (someone will have to confirm probably though). anyways, I'm running mint atm, basiclly I've heard people say that it is just debian with extra features pre loaded. Arch starts at the bare minimum (command prompt) and you install only the packages you want and build your own personalized OS. ubuntu, no idea. Sorry if I'm completly wrong (very well could be)
-
well player hit mint right on
for arch it literally starts as a core os with enough to load ethernet drivers and run pacman to get you adding you own packages and literally build a fully customized os from the internals up (if you choose are you only need about 6 gigs for it to live happily but 8 is recommanded for storage) me tribal juju and a few others can help you if you choose that
ubuntu is basically like mint it comes preloaded with a ton of app and a easy to use gui its probally the most users freindly linux os with decent support the only thing i have to say about it is it comes a bit bloated with software you may never use XD
the question here really is how big is the harddrive ?
-
I think its a 60GB don't know though...I might go with arch...or mint...I'll have to think about it, thanks guys though!
-
In fact, Ubuntu is the easy to use and popular distro that everyone uses (who is based on Debian) and Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu and comes preloaded with the proprietary software (such as Flash Player, which doesn't come with Ubuntu) so that everything works out of the box. I don't use Mint, but I know people who says that Mint is better than Ubuntu...
Arch Linux comes with only pacman and the bare minimum to make a system usable, so you have to install everything manually, if you feel adventurous. It works with a rolling release system, so you always have the last version of everything.
-
hmm, well I kind of like not having to work too hard, but I also like being able to fully create the operating system with arch...so it's a hard choice...
-
To configure Arch, you just follow the tutorial found on the website step-by-step and you're done :P
Also, don't try Gentoo.
-
more or less XD (i didnt follow the tutorial and went on my own as well.......worked for me XD)
-
Yeah. xorg.conf can be painful to configure sometimes.
-
actually i didnt have to touch it
cause i went with vesa if your gfx card is suported it will go on like no problem and auto configure which is very nice XD after you install the drivers for it else it will also default to vesa which is just a generic driver
-
One thing I dislike about the Linux word is how in many cases, application tutorials or readmes for Linux native apps (even their Windows/Mac versions) are written in cryptic ways that makes you even more confused at it. It's like if the people who wrote those help files are singling out people with less experience with computers. People encourage others to switch to Linux but don't help them at all and force them to rely on help forums to search for their questions (or ask). I don't know how Linux distros themselves are, but I know apps like Irssi had very cryptic help files when I last checked.
Btw, do you guys think a 80 GB harddrive would be enough to fit Mint and Windows XP? Do I need a special harddrive to be able to partition it and is partitioning hard and dangerous for the average Windows user who don't venture into low-level stuff?
Btw I always found Mac Os to be more user friendly than Windows. Even apps made for it seemed to have more user-friendly controls, like Photoshop. I loved Photoshop for Mac, but I despise the Windows version, especially how Zooming in an image won't increase the window size like in Photofiltre Studio. But Mac is so friggin expensive for what it offers and its variety of softwares is still not any better than Linux. Just that would make me never go back to Mac Os again. Also Mac Os 9.2 is terrible in terms of stability.
-
well depending on the linux os which you chose mint i would say thats more than enough although i have never used mint it supposedly not that large as well
the only problem i have had with partitioning is not defragging first and making sure what im partitioning is all free space making windows freak at next boot cause files were moved and other stupid things like that. i think we all would suggest gparted for partitioning which has a nice gui and is relatively easy to use as long as you understand the words it has on it :) (like logical partition primary ect)
and no any harddrive/stargae device can be partitioned from a hdd to a sd card so no special hdd needed :)
and agreed a lot of linux apps have not great documentation but i have also seen the many apps that have had better documentation than windows/mac so i guess it luck of the draw X.x
-
is defragmenting needed if you format your harddrive first? Also in which order both OSes should be installed?
Btw I'm not going into linux now, but I am asking in case, because eventually I had plans to load Linux on my old PC, but would still like to be able to use Windows XP on it too, since some old apps will not work on Seven (and my version of Seven doesn't support Virtual PC)
-
Yeah, gparted have a nice GUI and is very straightforward, it even moves and defrags the files your NTFS partition to make sure no data would be overwritten during the resize of the partitions.
And on my computer with 80GB of space I fitted 4 operating systems on it (WfW3.11 and Win7 on the 1st 40GB drive, Ubuntu and Arch on the 2nd 30GB and a separate /home partition on the last 15GB), so it's not a problem. Linux is always happy with 10GB.
Also, it's advised to install Windows first to let the linux installer install its bootloader properly instead of the ugly Windows BOOTMGR. GRUB2 shows you a nice menu (you can even set a background image!) when booting your PC, it's fun.
And RTFM :P
-
well as I mentionned in my posts sometimes even RTFMing won't help, because a lot are written in cryptic ways that only tech-savy users can understand. In some cases, when I ask for help afterward, people are even more cryptic, making me even more confused x.x. Oh well, hopefully maybe it should be different this time, and since I got two PC, I can always hop on IRC at night if I need help.
Also i checked and my harddrive is NTFS so I should be good. I feared it was an older format or something.
-
lol yeah 80gb is definetily enough even windows can live in 15gb but its tight :P
and yes manuels are useful but IMO real ppl with experiance are better (eg irc with me juju tribal ect XD) but the manuels are good for a quick answer if your wiliing to read XD
@ juju whats wfw3.11
-
Windows for Workgroups 3.11. (Yeah, I have that. :P) On top of a stripped down MS-DOS 6 installation who were already there when I bought the computer.
Also, Linux should recognize both NTFS and ext4 while Windows should see only its own partition. And yeah, it's better to ask on IRC, it's way better than these cryptics manuals you would need a Ph. D. to read that.
-
yup meaning you can use linux to work on files on your windows partition but nit the other way around so files you want on windows and linux must be on the ntfs partition or a seprate fat32/ntfs partiton in a shared partition 9kinda pointless but i have done it just to keep organized XD)
-
What does Ph. D stands for?
-
Ph. D as in a like masters degree in some form or science medicine form of study ectera
eg a super genious on said subject :)
EDIT :quick google search shows that it is actually a 3 year study on one subject upon which one earns a doctorite degry at the end of said study :)
-
ah ok, never heard of that before x.x
-
A doctor has a Ph. D, so any doctor. It's kind of the highest level you can get in any field (other then in your job)
-
Strange, over here we don,t use that in french. If we talk about someone's level in terms of studies, we just say the person got a diploma in medecine at university, or if we want to be more in details, we say he got a "doctorat" diploma in medecine. In Uni, the lowest level is baccalauréat, second level maîtrise and third level doctorat. We rarely ever refer to a doctorat diploma owner as "doctor" because everyone misinterprets it as the person who work in a hospital (technically, in french, doctor is medecin, but in our local slang we always say doctor)
-
/me goes back on the topic of OS selection
I use Fedora 10, it's nice, and it runs really smoothly even on my crappy 10y-old machine.
-
Is fedora user-friendly for someone with little experience with computers? I would probably want to start with something that is.
-
I was
linux-illiterate completely ignorant when I got it, and I didn't know as much as I know now. At least with GNOME, I'd say yes.
-
Aaah ok :P
-
ok, so I'm getting my laptop sometime next week, and window's seven will be on one partition, and on the other I will install Arch. when I get it anybody want to help walk me through installing it?
-
Nice to hear! Unfortunately I won't be able to help, though, since I don't know much about dual-booting and Linux
It might be good to ask the question in a separate topic too when you need to, since otherwise it migth be missed
-
true, I'll do that :) also this is good news now because I'll be able to host things now :D like bots and such :P
-
Nice :D
I hope your parents lets you use your laptop when you want and allow you to keep it on all the time
try to be careful to not push it to extremes, though, because I heard laptops tend to break after only 2 years if used way too much (especially gaming)
