Title: Questions about the origins of the universe (aka Omnimaga)
Post by: pimathbrainiac on November 27, 2012, 08:55:22 pm
1. Where did the name come from?
2. What's with the giving of peanuts to newbies?
3. Why did DJ_O retire?
4. Why are we the only calc forum that has IRC? (that I know of)

(1) Ask DJ_Omnimaga (the name I knew DJ_O by before he changed it) that question. Not sure if he's still around, but that's the historian you'd ask.
(2) Omnimaga meme. Live with it and eat well.
(3) Not sure, but I think it related to the drama that would happen in both the forums and the IRC channel. Sure seemed burned out, but again, that's a question you'd ask DJ_O.
(4) Cemetech has one, but it's hidden behind their SAX chat widget. I think it was Omnimaga that followed suit with OmnomIRC. But ours is more obvious because it is more awesome.

Sorry I wasn't able to help much.

2. They started here: http://z9.invisionfree.com/omnimaga/index.php?showtopic=5&view=findpost&p=5353270 and it went nuts :P
3. something like above post
4. Other sites have IRC as part of the page as well..TI-Planet, Cemetech, UCF, probably more

1. It's a final fantasy related name. -aga in Final Fantasy is the strongest spell (excluding -aja). So Omnimaga is basically a strongest all-element spell :P (at least that's what I think DJ told me)

So a calculator forum was named after a final fantasy spell? :P

This forum started as a place for RPG development and discussion. Makes sense to have an RPG inspired name~

3. Yeah, drama, trolls and stuff like that. DJ_O (formerly DJ Omnimaga and xlibman) grew tired dealing of all this, so he stepped down. Also the fact he had all the powers, including deleting the whole site off, combined with the fact he can go haywire when trolls/drama happens, he wasn't too fond of this either I think so he stepped down so he can't do much damage with admin powers. (Omnimaga was down for 6 months between the Invisionfree and SMF eras because of this IIRC, DJ_O feared it would happen again.)

And yeah, the first games DJ did are RPGs and Omnimaga initially was oriented towards them.
Title: Re: Questions about the origins of the universe (aka Omnimaga)
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 27, 2012, 11:16:32 pm
1) It came from Final Fantasy VII's Omnislash limit break and the word magic. Originally Ultimaga (Ultima+Magic) was gonna be used, but the name was already taken by my bro (see Illusiat 9). At the same time, Omni also work as some sort of prefix meaning everywhere or everything or something. Hence why the original 2001 logo has fire, ice and bolt magic pictured around it simultaneously.

And yeah almost every Omni game were RPGs until 2005 or so. There was even a site named after Omni which only had calc RPGs (some not made by Omni) in its downloads section. That was some sort of counter measure against how hard it was to find a decent RPG on Ticalc.org. Back then, on Ticalc.org, games were not sorted by genre: They were in one single category. Now, even text/menu-based RPGs are split into a separate category (almost obsoleting Omni RPG section)

2) This is an Omnimaga local meme/inside joke that got started in June 2006 by Spellshaper. Then it just spread accross the intro section (even on United-TI once). The actual peanut bag photoshop came out around Early 2007, though (In December 2006, a peanut emoticon was used too).

3) Reason 1: The drama resulting from certain people outside Omnimaga constantly finding something controversial in the way Omnimaga members or management behaves, even when it was simply a different mentality, and consequently triggering site wars between regular members. As I had more important problems to deal with in real life (which affected me even more), I simply collapsed under the pressure then handed the site to some of the current admins in July 2011.

Reason 2: After my life got better (and that I partially recovered), my physical condition, my slightly higher amount of real life activities (metal concerts FTW!) and my gradual loss of interest towards calculators and programming since Jan 2011 simply ended any hope of seeing myself ever become a regular (blue) admin again.

4) #Omnimaga is actually the third youngest calculator channel that is still active. The only younger channels are #cemetech (started shortly after ours) and #tifreakware (started in 2006). Multiple channels were used beforehand for Ticalc.org and Detachedsolutions.com from 1995 until today. MaxCoderz had one from 2002 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2008 and United-TI had one from 2004 to 2010.

Omni was also the second last TI site to get a SAX/OmnomIRC-like shoutbox that is linked to IRC. Cemetech had SAX since Early 2006, which was also used later on many affiliate sites such as Stickfire Graphic Productions, Outside the Box Programming (Calc84maniac's former site) and a few others. Omnimaga got a proprietary shoutbox system in 2010, inspired from what Cemetech had (adding more features, although SAX is much more stable).

Hmm... from that quote, there's no proof that Netham45 is a lobster, as it says it's Netham46 that is, not 45. Maybe the actual Netham45 is not a lobster?? O.O
Title: Re: Questions about the origins of the universe (aka Omnimaga)

Netham46 is a clone of Netham45 (which is itself the 45th iteration of Netham's cloning processus and the very first one who was able to interact with people), so if N46 is a lobster, N45 might also be a lobster.

The official description of omni's name :P

Omnimaga was founded on September 1st 2001, by Kévin Ouellet (later nicknamed as xlibman, then DJ Omnimaga and now DJ_O). The word Omnimaga is composed of the word magic, prefixed by Omni. Originally, the name was chosen in a computer science class to append to each projects the founder made and was inspired from console RPG magic (initially, the name was going to be Ultimaga, composed with Ultima and magic, but the author's brother already used it in his projects). The original Omnimaga logo represented the three main Final Fantasy magic spells: Fire, Ice and Bolt:

It took me ages to figure that out since at school, peanut butter was placed under meats and substitutes in the Canadian Food Guide. :P That and how tomatoes were actually fruits (before I found that out, I thought if a vegetable/fruit had a very low sugar amount that it was automatically a vegetable. :P

Back to nuts, it must suck to be allergic to them, because most stuff got traces of them >.<. Sometimes they don't, as the factory they're produced in has no trace of nuts, but it can be hard to figure out sometimes, and there can be mistakes.

All peanuts distributed on the Omnimaga boards are allergen-free, so you should be pretty safe. Unless you fall on peanuts that aren't virtual.

I’d be more excited that in 2 posts you’ll be perfect. You’ll get another palindrome at 505,515,525 ect. But you won’t be perfect again until you have 8128 posts. DJ_O is the only one to be perfect 4 times, though there are quite a few to be perfect three times, and no one will ever be perfect five times

The first 5 perfect numbers are: 6, 28, 496, 8128, 33550336
(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_number)

The 2 first ones can be easily reached within a week, the 3rd one can be generally reached in less than a year, the 4th one, only DJ_O reached it (by far), but Deep Thought is expected to reach it in the near future and the 5th one, well SMF doesn't even allow you to have that much posts.

Title: Re: Questions about the origins of the universe (aka Omnimaga)
Post by: Rhombicuboctahedron on December 07, 2012, 06:14:45 pm
A perfect number is a number such that the sum of its proper positive divisors (0<divisors<number) is equal to that number, or that the sum of all of its positive divisors are equal to twice that number.
6=1+2+3
28=1+2+4+7+14
496= …
The next one is 8128, and after that 33550336, so even though DJ_O has 48000 posts, he’d have to post 37 times every hour of every day for 100 years to get that many.
