Title: Quick Survey About You and Omnimaga.
Post by: Happybobjr on November 06, 2013, 04:09:02 pm
Hey everyone, I hope you're having a good day so far.

In a recent essay for English Class, I wrote an essay about my experience in a "discourse community"
Spoiler For Spoiler:
"A discourse community' is a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those goals. Linguist, John Swales defined discourse communities as 'groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals'" -Wikipedia

Anyways, we've been assigned a follow-up essay about the communities as a whole and include views of the other members as well.  If you wouldn't mind, I request that you reply with answers to the questions, and not look at others' until you have submitted yours.  (Feel free to send as a PM if private, or ignore questions)

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)

8 ) What country are you from?

If you have any questions or ideas for new questions, feel free to ask or let me know :)

1 - First contact - ugly skin (how could i!) and axe parser made me stay :)

2 - ponies/me hides
Also, rubiks cubes, geekish-ness in general

3 - because I love programming and the community is so friendly

4 - rule the world! Ok, seriousley, have fun in a friendly community.

5 - You guys are awesome friends :)

6 - Wait, there is a outside world? Oh, that one, um, not much *yet* (maybe helped me getting 100% on that com sci test :P)

7 - currently it is 'sorunomes' and 'eeemses' and stuff like that ^^

8 - Equestria. Or the internet? I don't know!

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
I don't remember how I first learned about it, but I stay mainly because of how nice and helpful the community is

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
I think that we do, we're all kind of silly and nerdy anyways :P

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
I frequent Omnimaga more because I've been here longer, and I like the community. Like I stated earlier, everyone is nice and helpful, and some funny stuff happens on IRC sometimes ;)

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
I don't think we have a "main goal", everyone has their own individual goal and we help them achieve it.

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
I feel that I get along nicely with everyone here

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Yes! I've learned so much about math, science, and programming from this class that I use all the time in the "outside world".

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
When in doubt, blame Sorunome

(sorry, Sorunome :P)

1) Axe Parser.
2)We are all a little crazy here?
3)Planète-Caiso because I'm a moderator.
4)Sharing experiences, programming, games, knwoledge. To live as a community.
5)I'd like to meet you, guys!
6)Yup, I certainly got better in programming and drawing some pixel artz
7) The Game & Soru?

HBJ asked people not to read other's posts, so I didn't read other's posts, but I think it would be easier to avoid reading them if they were spoilered.

So, my answers are in the spoiler below.

Spoiler For Spoiler:
1) I was playing TI-Boy SE (which I downloaded I don't know where, but not on Omnimaga) when my calc crashed. I looked on Google where I could complain get help and arrived here. Then I discovered Axe and stayed.
2) I never think I have similarities with anyone. I mean, I was so often told I was weird that I never try to think about similarities now. Maybe I have, but I don't know.
3) Does that mean "why are you on Omnimaga more often" ? If so, because it is more active than Cemetech and talks more about Axe than TI Planet. But I am often on TI Planet too.
4) I'd just say that we're here to share our hobby with good mood. I don't know if that counts as a goal, but that's how I see it.
5) Depends. Like IRL you'd say. Most are like classmates whom I can speak with seriously or to have a laugh.
6) Yeah, I don't think I'd have found a school that teaches me interesting things if I never discovered the joys of programming with Axe.
7) "Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again." That is not meant to be a joke but I love that error message.

edit now that I read other's answers, there are some things that I agree with but I didn't think about it earlier. Would it be a good idea to mention them too in a second spoiler ?

Spoiler For Spoiler:
3) I also feel like Omnimaga is more friendly than Cemetech. People say it is because Omnimaga has rules against not being nice so it is not a good thing for freedom, but I don't care, I feel better here.

No, I just don't want them read until they have submitted theirs.  That way they aren't swayed by what they read.
Its fine to read them :)

Ah yeah, that's what meant. But would it be a good idea to do a first answer without reading other's posts, then a second pass (in another spoiler if we used spoiler) after reading other's posts to see what we agree with but didn't think about earlier ?

1)  I really started to fiddle with TI-Basic Sophmore year and I soon found Axe on TIcalc.org.  Failing miserably I went to google to get help and found Omnimaga.  I came in at a really bad time when Axe was umm... removed and I kinda really lost my temper before hearing all sides of the matter (or even introducing myself....).  I really felt like shit when I got many, many PM's telling me that I was out of line and why.  Even though I was being [yelled] at for my behavior, it wasn't aggresive.  Everyone sent them telling me what I did wrong and why it was wrong. It was informative. I grew deep respect for many members, such as SirCmPwn for their way of writing, that literally inspired empathy and a cool head.  I felt bad, but people were still welcoming towards me.  This kindness and empathy is what made me realize that Omnimaga was a family.  Even though members would leave, for a short time or forever, it was because it was their time to leave such as a son/daughter leaving their home.  I needed a family outside of my own, and I had finally found one.  I may not always be around any more, but I still hold what I have found here very close to my heart.

2) Yes, I have noticed that there are large occurrences.  Such as runners, MLP fans, cubers, etc.

3) I love the color scheme of Omnimaga :3. Cemetech seems a bit... detached to me. Also, on first visit, I was visited by some dick who told me my project was pointless and I should leave.  Beyond that... Again, this became a family to me.  I honestly kinda viewed DJ as a fatherly figure.

4) Yes. I feel Omnimaga has a resounding main goal. Perhaps its not tangible, but to help people and support them is definitly a big goal.  Secondary to that, I would say it is programming.  However, those two tend to be intertwined.

5) I may have been away for quite a while, and probably will be again, I feel like you all are really friends.  And again, what I said about DJ.

6) Very much so.  Coding, no matter the language, shares a sort of essence. The language and syntax may be different, but the concepts, such as loops and all that, stay the same.

7) I love the peanuts :P

1) I first learned about it after discovering axe. What made me want to stay were the helpful and inviting community members.

2) Most community members have a good sense of humor, like a good challenge and are creative thinkers.

3) I started here on omnimaga as a calc programmer. I don't use the cemetech forums as much, but I frequent their irc. I do post hardware threads there.

4) Welp... coding and having fun doing so?

5) Strictly un-professional.

6) Maybe it did. I dunno.

7) Wacking people with a fishbone is fun. I wonder why people forgot about this one. I don't see it on irc very often anymore.

8 ) The Netherlands.

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
Uh.... It's been linked on other community websites in the past, so... that's how, I guess, but it's been a while ^^

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
Computer geeks in general, and probably a bit smarter than the average at school, but lazier too ? (which can be useful for programming.... finding ways to do more with less :P There's a quote by Bill Gates about that)

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
I visit Omnimaga and TI-Planet everyday, and Omni is coming second about my visit rates (dozens of times per day), since you'll have to take for an answer that TI-Planet is the website I co-founded and I am co-admin of :P (so, probably a hundred times a day - it's pretty much like a default tab on my browser, so...) The reason is that... well I'm interested in calc programming and related stuff ? :D
Cemetech, cncalc, ticalc.org are other community websites that I sometimes visit (actually, probably once every day, in fact) ... just to see what's there on that day.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
Well.... IDK, making extraordinary calc programs ? Always pushing backs the limits ?

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
Very good ?

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Outside of calc programming, I don't think so ... (although some maths topics got me interested several times...)

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
Well, I know those two, at least..., and the lobster.... but "favorite", I don't know :P

8 ) What country are you from?
France

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
Spyro543. End of story.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
Homestuck (Thanks Juju) and we're all nerds. We all signed up to be The Coders of Tomorrow! (since 2001)

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
I forgot my Cemetech password and Kerm creeps me out. (he's EVERYWHERE, ALL of the TIME)
jk, Kerm is awesome.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
Nope. We all help eachother reach our own goals, which could be an overall goal in itself I guess.

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
I joined, never finished anything, and disappeared. But I'm back now and I know everyone so yay.

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Yes.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
Blue Lobsters? Maybe The Game as well, although it was quite common in my school when I joined. Nice to see it lives on here. :P

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
A link on UCF, IIRC. Programming and geekness I guess.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
I think a love of science and math. At least for most of us it seems. Also geek gaming, like text-based RPG's and chess.

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
I frequent UCF, Cemetech, Omnimaga, and Casiopeia exactly the same amount because all those sites are pinned tabs, and automatically open whenever I open firefox. They never get closed. But I probably am more partial to UCF because I am an admin there, and Cemetech because it seems more PRIZM dev happens there. But I check all the sites about the same amount.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
Not sure. Getting people to realize how much fun programming is?

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
Good, I guess. Some more than others, obviously.

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Calc programming has, yes. I don't know about omnimaga specifically though.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
Not really sure I have one. I used to be really into that but now it seems a bit spammy. Though I do joke like that sometimes, don't get me wrong.

8 ) What country are you from?
Come on, haven't you heard about the NSA? (jk, just look at my profile)

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
 - First learned about it when Builder's Basic Portal came out, it didn't really catch on then though. It really started with Axe.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
 - Just people who like fiddling with old hardware/software, I guess?

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
 - Basically it's out of habit now.  Tried Cemetech for a bit, the atmosphere just didn't really click. Also to kind of test the waters, I started the same project thread on both forums (twhg)..the thread here was full of all sorts of feedback and people actually trying it out; the cemetech topic, aside from like 8 posts, was just me and kerm going back and forth.
As for TI-Planet, I don't speak french so that probably wouldn't click either.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
 - Programming..? Ndless seems to be a pretty large cause, though you don't hear much of it until it actually happens.
Or the dozens of people poking calc84 to finish his projects >:] (coughfzerocough)

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
 - Kind of an informal, easy-going sort of thing?

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
 - Calc programming has gotten me into programming in general, and now I'm working towards a CS degree and some of the low-level knowledge should help out. Also the social status in high school math class, being the guy who spreads Mario@co. around :P

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
 - Blaming everything on Sor?  That or lobsters. Delicious.

8 ) What country are you from?
 - 'Murica

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
I don't quite remember how I joined here first. But all I know is that I was lurking here quite a bit before joining. Maaaaybe it was for Axe.
I liked the friendly userbase in general and I was quite interested at calc programming.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
Dunno. I don't forum much.

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
Well, TI-Planet is French, and I like both Omni and Cemetech. But since I joined Omni first, that's the place I visit more (even though I was flaking time to time.)

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
Ndless, Axe development?
Mostly TI programming

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
I wuv everyone

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
It helped my APCSA.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
PEANUTS
ALL OF THEM

ticalc.org | people were helpful =)

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
mostly a younger crowd (12-mid 20s) who spend too much time on the internet and futzing around with computers.

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
<- admin :P

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
providing a place for people to share what they're up to and get help without being mocked.

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
Geekboy told me about it on another IRC channel on Freenode, and since I owned a TI-83+ and programmed a lot on it back in the days, it seemed natural I would join a TI community. And I stayed because of the pretty great ambiance both on the forums and IRC and I made friends. Oh, and I like the v5 theme.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
The MLP fad didn't spared Omnimaga (despite how hard a certain sir tried), obviously, but there's also fans of Homestuck and music (especially metal).

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
I have a short attention span keeping me from keeping up with all of them at the same time? Serously, probably the features Omnimaga have and the others don't quite have, like the New Posts page, which is pretty convenient here and I wasn't quite used to those of the others. Also the site's effort to keep it friendly, even though it sometimes slip. And did I said I really liked the theme?

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
Promote calculator hacking and gaming?

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
Most of them, if not all, are pretty friendly. Especially DJ Omnimaga, ever since I met him here, he became one of my best friends.

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
That is very possible. English is not my native language, it might also have helped me there as well.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
Lobsters!

8) What country are you from?

Hm, google or ticalc.org not sure, I decided to stay, because (even though I had 0 programming experience) it was a great experience learning.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
Yes, MLP fans

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
Cemetech, people post less, and I don't speak French :P

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
To learn, by doing what we enjoy.

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?

Yes

As Omnimaga founder, that was kinda weird to take this survey >.<

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
Lol I founded it. :P I eventually quit my admin position because the task was becoming too much, but what made me stay was the people and the calculator gaming-related discussion in general.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
I notice that there's a lot of music and gaming fans around here, but I guess that's a given considering the old school nature of calc gaming and that back in the 80's and 90's, most game music was good. Also, there are a lot of INTJ people and the vast majority of users range from 15 to 18, with a large minority being 12-14 and 19-30. Also, despite people liking my electronic dance music, most people here historically disliked every other "techno" music.

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
Back in 2004, there was virtually no interest towards calculator RPGs in the French TI community, so as a result, I eventually became more active on English sites, despite not being my native language and higher hostility there. As for Cemetech, there were many factors causing me to be less active there at some points in time (eg the kllrnohj/jpez/Ultimate Dev'r war against newbies from 2006-09), but in general nowadays, whenever there is some calculator gaming or project discussion, it is entirely possible to see days where I have more posts on Cemetech than Omnimaga. Of course, as Omni founder I am a bit biased, though, lol, and I am not much into hardware material, so I tend to spend a bit more time contributing over here. There is also the fact that there are many people over here that I knew for a much longer time. Oh and also, the new posts feature is visible to guests and doesn't empty itself on next session, which is pretty convenient if I need to quickly check the site but am not logged in.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
Providing discussion free of hostility, calc game development and keeping the community alive in general. I would also see Axe Parser and Ndless as big parts of Omni too, which both help the last point with more freedom for programmers and gamers, who see more games and programs for their respective platforms. Of course, sometimes we have to be more mean to certain people, but that's inevitable on the Internet and we try to not abuse it. Also, one thing I find about Omnimaga is that everyone is treated equally (for example, if an admin dislikes you, you don't have higher chances of being moderated than other members despite behaving equally), which was kinda my goal back then, so I guess that remained as a goal.

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
I tend to not be around as much as in 2008-10, but I would say that it's quite good with the majority of people. Juju loses the game IRL often, though. :P

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Unfortunately, my school days were far before Omni even got an active forums, but I would say that during the 7 years I ran the site, experimenting and stuff, I learned a lot, such as some mistakes to not do when managing a sub-community, but in real life, it also helped me interact with some situations better when socializing with people. My english improved a lot compared to the disaster that is the Reign of Legends 2 translation.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
Of course I am not too much into the peanuts joke myself, as I refer more often to the lobster or the game more lately, but the peanut one still remains one I like a lot because of how long it survived (7 and an half years so far). Despite being an Omnimaga-only thing and that Omni closed for  6 months in 2008, Omni peanuts came back immediately after the re-opening and are still as popular in November 2013 as they were in June 2006. Among the other community inside jokes, the only one that lasted longer than peanuts is ticalc.org's Wacky Fun Random Numbar Generator v1.00069.

8 ) What country are you from?
Canada

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?

Axe caused me to first learn about Omni, and the everything else influenced me to stay.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)

MLP, Robotics, general nerdiness

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)

I don't know. Can you put a specific reason on why you love the person you love?

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)

Yes: be awesome and welcoming to n00bs, and to be a more free forum than others.

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?

Good, although I have angered a DJ at least once (sorry about that... seriously). Considering I'm FB friends with one of you guys (although he doesn't show up here much any more), I think it's actually really great.

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?

It has helped me in my other-languages programming. A LOT. Learning to program on limited-resource machines helps me use as little resources as possible on my x64.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)

!peanuts http://goo.gl/QMET and http://i-lost-the-ga.me (EDIT: and HOLY NECROPOST BATMAN!!!)

8 ) What country are you from?

USA

*I kinda read almost everyone's answer before reading that I wasn't suppose to, it starts showing posts on the latest page :(
Spoiler For Spoiler:
1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?

I think I first learned about Omnimaga when I realized I needed a new calculator. It was a long time ago and I didn't stay! I was in college partying it up most of the time! I came back though when TI finally released a color calc that I was somewhat familiar with.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)

I think we are all weird of course! But we are unique, we are coders, and definitely intelligent :) I have still *never* met another calc programmer in my life!

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)

Omnimaga is the place to be! TIPlanet seems to be more about the inspire. Honestly, I don't really go to the other site too much and I'll keep it at that. I like Kerm and his early posts about Doors on ticalc.org should be an inspiration to everyone (he took a lot of crap, but look at it now!).

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)

I think Omnimaga's main goal is to help and teach other people. Its also a fun place to hang out!

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?

When I first read this question I was going to straight bash someone but then I read this:
This kindness and empathy is what made me realize that Omnimaga was a family.
and decided to leave it alone. Thank you!

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?

Definitely. Learning to program the calc was probably the best thing that I've ever done. And I love my fans (I actually have fans!  :w00t:) and I love the anonymous emails that just read "You're awesome" or whatever.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)

Probably the quad solvers or rand number generators!

8 ) What country are you from?

USA!

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
Calculator programs, of course. I seem to like the friendly community, as well as a lot of interesting projects.
2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
Losing the game, enjoying old games, and producing art and music.
3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
The forum navigation is beautiful, and when I first joined Cemetech, I didn't have a Prizm (I do now). Plus, Omnimaga is more populous, if I'm not mistaken.
4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
Encouraging people to program. And being the main beacon of the calculator programmers.
5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
It's rebuilding after a history of trolling, I think.
6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Not really; our CS teacher didn't want us to use ?: at all, or ++ or -- in expressions. But I do it anyway.
7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
Peanuts, and/me lost
8 ) What country are you from?
I was born in South Korea, but now I've lived in the U. S. for, what? 12 years?
If you have any questions or ideas for new questions, feel free to ask or let me know Smiley

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?

This took some digging. It looks like I found the site (or at the very least created an account) to talk about nspire development. This was in the days when installing ndless meant running the original OS version, with a certain power management bug that made your batteries drain really fast.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)

I don't think this counts for what you're asking, but there's the shared interest by many members in general electronics.

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)

TI-Planet is french, and I don't speak french. Not much of a reason, I know. :P

Mostly, there's more activity on Omni and most of Cemetech maintains a semi-active presence to the point that being active on both sites only affects whether maybe 4-5 people see me. Omni also has a better layout imo.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)

I would say there are several factions of Omni with their own goals, and members generally belong to at least one. I will list them:

The programming faction, who use the calculator to fulfill their own purposes through programs.
subsets include:
The hacking faction. (Critor, thepenguin, etc) which focuses on making the calculator do what TI prevents.
The power faction. (Runer, calc84, etc) which focuses on making the calculator do things as well as possible
The gamer faction, which focuses on making entertainment-oriented programs. (Much of the community)
The helper faction, which focuses on making things for other people to use. (Axe, Grammer, the various IDEs, etc.)
The BASIC faction, which focuses on making programs entirely through the crippled built-in languages. (This includes Lua)

The MLP fans, whose sole purpose is to annoy me. (j/k)

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?

Lurker, mostly.

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?

Yes, occasionally. My programming experience has helped in many cases, for example.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)

Netham, while a blue lobster, has a pink username.

8) What country are you from?

USA

Spoiler For Spoiler:
1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
When I learnt Axe, I used a French tutorial (by kindermoumoute, I and nikitouzz are now the redactors in addition to him), and Omnimaga was quoted as a place where it's good to be. So I came to check, and since I had great fun here, I decided to stay :P

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
I feel like many people are around my age here (around 16), and I realized that my music tastes were kinda usual here, that's a good thing ;D

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
I think the community is more active than Cemetech's and more specialized in z80 calcs than TI-Planet (especially for Axe), but I stay over the three sites rather equally.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
I think the main goal of the community is to have the best fun possible and to amaze other people with projects, altogether. That's how I feel at least.

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
What I like about Omnimaga is that I feel like everyone is my friend :P This is by far one of the most friendly community I saw, every nationality mixed up.

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Yeah kinda, because finding solutions to problems helps think better and more efficiently, and we're always here to help each other (that's the point of a community heh).

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
I think it's Sorunome being the Almighty Server Pony-master.

8 ) What country are you from?
I'm French, from France.

Yeah, this is why I wrote mine in a spoiler, but seems like only two people followed me.

TIPlanet seems to be more about the inspire.
Well of course if every z80 guy says "it's more about Nspires" and don't go there, it will stay more about Nspires lol.
In fact, TI Planet works in a different way than other websites. There is a team trying to get every possible information on every model. That includes for example dismounting a model to see its hardware, and most news are obviously about new models because older models were already dismounted, this is why you have more Nspire news. But when the CSE was new, there was a lot of CSE news too so it is definitely not a Nspire only forum.
And apart from that team, everyone is welcome to share his/her work on the forums, it is just a vicious circle that makes that no one does it, so no one does it.

But yeah, I understand that it is more convenient to be active on as less sites as possible, to avoid having to check 3 topics for the same project and 3 archives for the same program.

This was in the days when installing ndless meant running the original OS version, with a certain power management bug that made your batteries drain really fast.

Wait... could this be why my batteries (Duracell) lasted less than 10 minutes when playing gbc4nspire while on OS 1.1? O.O I also remember that the screen would not turn back on unless I rebooted the calc, which was incredibly annoying.

Happybobjr, interesting question. On geekboy's recommendation, I'd be interested in all of your parallel responses in this similar Cemetech topic:

Quick Survey About You and Cemetech (http://www.cemetech.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9675)

AssemblyBandit: I'm particularly sad to see your response. We (=Cemetech) generally consider Omnimaga the place to be for Axe and TI-Nspire and Cemetech for z80 ASM and z80 BASIC, so we're always sad to see you around less often and sharing less of your expertise and projects with us. :(

@Kerm: Actually TI-Nspire nearly died entirely over here until a few days ago. There are news about bad OS updates and hardware changes, but Texas Instruments almost completely destroyed our TI-Nspire programming userbase. :(

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
I've spotted Omnimaga around 2006, but only signed up in 2011 after my brother Stefan showed me that the calculator community was still alive.

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
The drive to make devices to what they are not supposed to do.

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
Because I'm interested in all the projects that are going on. Mainly the TI-Nspire projects, but I'm always interested in reading threads regarding tweaks/hacks to the z80 devices.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
The goal of the website on its own is to group calculator programmers and unite them. I suppose that has worked out pretty well.

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
Yes, especially with some of the TI-Nspire members. (Although most of them are TI-Planet admins)

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Omnimaga and calculator programming in general has helped me learn very interesting things. It has been a very useful resource of information to me.

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
No favorite one for me

8 ) What country are you from?
Belgium

It doesn't mean that when some people don't post regarding projects that it's dead.

True, but sometimes there can be weeks with no project updates, when there are like 2 84+ project updates on a regular basis. It's not necessarily dead, but sometimes, it's quite close.

Your right, I had judged my answer more off of recent posts (and edited to make it shorter). A minor problem is the way I have to translate everything and clicking the flag does nothing but show you the latest posts (I think) but still in French. I did get an addon that uses google translate to convert the pages, but the translation isn't that great. If something isn't spelled right it doesn't get translated and on one post I've seen the phrase 'its pissing me off'. Judging from the rest of the text (it was all nice comments) I think it was suppose to translate to great program or something along the line.

Yeah, the flag doesn't translate everything. It "just" sets you as Ensglish, and when a post is available in both languages it will be displayed to you in English. But not all posts are available in both languages. Most big news are (props to the admin team for their double hard work), but most topics aren't.
For the "it's pissing me off" part, it may be right in fact, if that was in a post from Lionel Debroux lol. Everyone is angry at TI for blocking their OSes on Nspires and Lionel Debroux expresses that anger very well.

1) How did you first learn about Omnimaga and what aspect influenced you to stay?
I found Omni thanks to Kindermoumoute's Axe tutorial. I stayed to share my stuff with others. :3

2) Do you feel as if we have similarities outside of programming naturally. If so, what are they? (i.e. MLP fans)
Well, we have everything in common. :P Just like good ol' firends.

3) For what reason(s) do you frequent Omnimaga over other sites like Cemetech or TIPlanet? (Or vise-versa)
The ambience at Cemetech doesn't seem to be quite the same as here and I don't even have an account there. TI Planet is too biased towards the Nspire for me.

4) Do you consider the community of Omnimaga to have a main goal(s)? (if so, what are they?)
Well, bringing calc gaming and coding to everyone, I guess ?

5) How do you feel your relationship is with other members?
Just like good ol' friends, as I said. I always have a blast with you guys.

6) Do you find that Omnimaga (and calc programming) has helped you in the outside world?
Yup. I'm always first in CS class./me runs

7) What is your favorite inside joke/lingo?  (i.e. Holy Necropost Batman!  or Welcome peanuts etc.)
There are so many I can't say. THE GAME maybe ?

8 ) What country are you from?
France
