I like a generally uncluttered desktop, so you won't find much stuff there, and that makes it kind of boring. :zzz:sommeil.gif

I tend to like things pretty simple and uncluttered.  I'm often changing my background also.  :Ptongue.gif

If I feel like the work and have the motivation, I might move to Ubuntu fully, again, this year.  But until then, I'm with Windows. (TASM <3)  :)smile.gif

For the bootup screen I used a hack long time ago (it was on some tweak xp kinda webby) that I don't remember. I know you can use a prgm to do it, but I don't like too many things running @ once.

how do you like beryl there?
Title: Screenshot of your desktop (Revived)
Post by: bfr on June 18, 2007, 01:54:00 pm
It's pretty awesome, but I want to get a faster CPU, although my AMD Semperon isn't too bad....

I should be able to switch it with an Athlon 64 without any problems, right?  Or would I have to reconfigure some stuff? What about just a better Semperon?

(It usually is fine, but when rendering some web pages, like Omnimaga, or applications that are kind of resource-intensive, it slows down.  I use Firefox/Konqueror, and they both can be pretty slow.  It also seems like there are a few bugs in Beryl....)

EDIT:  Btw, I have kind of good RAM (about a gigabyte of dual-channel DDR2), and a kind of good hard drive (although that probably wouldn't affect it too much....), so it's mostly me ~1GHz Semperon CPU I'm worried about.

Here's what I've done to xp so far:

Changed the system font to superazor (trying to imitate the Wipeout game font)
Hacked it to use unsigned themes
Changed the cursor and audio sounds to the Vista versions
Changed the system icons using IconPackager
Removed the start bar using ObjectDock
Added shadows to the windows using yzShadow
Added ability for transparency using glass2k
And a few registry edits to remove all the clutter from the desktop and start menu (recycle bin was removed for example)

A few tweaks to the program interfaces and some cool backgrounds/themes and this is what you get:

http://img522.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot3fb2.png http://img522.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot2il8.png http://img514.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot1mb3.png

Notice the program I'm working on.
It's a graphical interface sprite/pic/map editor. With it you can freely edit 8x8/16x16 in B&W/Grayscale in any combination with a push of a button.

Changed the system font to superazor (trying to imitate the Wipeout game font)
Hacked it to use unsigned themes
Changed the cursor and audio sounds to the Vista versions
Changed the system icons using IconPackager
Removed the start bar using ObjectDock
Added shadows to the windows using yzShadow
Added ability for transparency using glass2k
And a few registry edits to remove all the clutter from the desktop and start menu (recycle bin was removed for example)

A few tweaks to the program interfaces and some cool backgrounds/themes and this is what you get:

http://img522.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot3fb2.png http://img522.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot2il8.png http://img514.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot1mb3.png

Notice the program I'm working on.
It's a graphical interface sprite/pic/map editor. With it you can freely edit 8x8/16x16 in B&W/Grayscale in any combination with a push of a button.

 What program editor is that?

That would be the discontinued TI-Program editor that used to be included in TI-Connect. Somewhere around v1.5 they took it out :(sad.gif

Luckily I had purchased my TI-84+SE just before the program editor was removed from TI-Connect. Since the calc came with TI-Connect on a CD, I have a perfectly preserved installation file :)smile.gif

If you are interested I would be willing to post the installation file.
As far as I know, it's perfectly legal since I am not modifying any of the contents and I am including all of the documentation.

windows classic is alright, it's simple and clean. I hate xp theme though, takes up way more pixels than it should and the colors are froopy.

If you could post it, I'd be interested in poking at it.

Hey nitacku, how did you change the system font?  I'm fairly tech-savvy, but I'm not sure how you change ALL of that text...(without going to Desktop Right-click→Properties→Appearance, and changing all of those settings.)

EDIT: And how did you hack it to use unsigned themes and where did you get said themes?

Ok, the installation file is sort of large (17.8mb) but I have compressed it to 13.6mb using WinRAR.

Cool.  NVM about the hacking, I googled it and got it.  Now to find a good Vista theme...

To change the font you have to go to Display Properties >> Appearance >> Advanced and then go through the list and select items to change the font on.

http://uneasysilence.com/how-to-use-unsigned-themes-on-windows/ will help you get rid of that boring xp theme.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=http://www.jscode.cn/Font/Font2547.htm&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=8&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfont%2Bsuperrazor%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG to get the font that I am using.

Yeah, I figured out the hacking.  But in my quest for a Vista theme, I stumbled upon http://www.crystalxp.net/galerie/en.id.5139-truetransparency-lefreut-explorer-tools.htm, whose so-called "themes" are limited, but support real transparency.  i.e. only the borders are transparent not the entire window.  Sweet, IMO.  It seems to intercept any request for a "window" so AFAIK, it'll work with anything.

It isn't hacking... There are many third party themes for windows rofl.

This screenie captures nothing of the true feeling of it.  Right-click menus are black, the start menu is black, everything with red highlights.

With WindowsFX 3.0, my comp is totally pwnsome!

I just wish WFX would work with TrueTransparency...

yeah it sucks that most skinning hacks aren't free, because it's hard to find a good download of them and we cannot provide them on forums because it would be against rules

WindowsFX has a free trial version.  It's for animating stuff...it's kind of taxing, so I wouldn't recommend it.  However, I suggest looking http://www.trap17.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=36887&mode=threaded to tweak Windows so you can use any .msstyle file.  You can find those at Deviant art; they're usually referred to as "Visual Styles" or "VS's".

WindowBlinds, and most other http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/3419/windowspwnage4rt0.png, software, has a free version.

Here's my new Windows XP desktop: http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/3419/windowspwnage4rt0.png

(I've decided to not use the Mac OS-like dock for now, although I can always easily re-enable it)

the free version of blinds only lasts 60 days and it spams you to register whenever you boot.

I find that WindowBlinds eats a lot of the system resources, so I stick with hacked XP :)smile.gif.

However, I stumbled upon http://www.stardock.com/products/thememanager/, also a StarDock product, but it's free, and in general handles WindowsBlinds, IconPackager, CursorXP...you get the idea :)smile.gif.

well, that keyboard is... in pieces. same for the mouse. Im rough on my preheprials. Also, I had them on a 733MHz for a while. They didn't stand a chance. >)

Also, I have a 24" Compaq here too, but I use it as a TV because it is going out and it is too fuzzy for text. >.<

There's a magic trick called "PrintScreen"...

Actually, it is called PrintScreen.  There generally is a little button to the right of F12 and above Insert.  Pressing that at any moment (I think) captures the current monitor screen to the clipboard.  Open up Paint, paste it in, and save it.

Post by: Netham45 on September 25, 2007, 02:11:00 am
I've actually had some issues with printscreen on a larger setup(more than one head.) I had a utility for Windows, but I forgot what it was called. For Linux, I use Gimp.

Also, no, that picture isn't the right size, it is only 1600x1200. It is also stretched out among 4 monitors so it looks like crap.

There's also some softwares like Printkey 2000 (one of them is free) that allow you to directly view the pic and save it without having to go through paint or another software

that is what Linuxes built in printscreen does, but it didn't capture my whole screen. It only got like the top right 30%

Actually, on that screenshot, that highlighted icon, screenshot.png , shows how much the default screenshot took.

I had almost the same theme as my Vista theme on Ubuntu, but Beryl doesn't do xinerama, so I had to loose it.
