Title: Should've done this much sooner...
Post by: Ikkerens on September 08, 2010, 04:57:31 pm
Hello everyone,

I am writing this topic based on events that happened in the last few moments.

It seemed that some of my posts have offended some people on this community.
I just want to say that these posts were not intended to be offending or even cause the idea that I was trolling.

Dj Omnimaga and I had a private talk where we talked things out, trying to explain that these were not my intentions.

Even some of my reactions on this forum were written while not being sober, causing my posts to seem narrow-minded.

Also, due my peroid of inactivity I was unable to clarify my posts and reactions. Should something I have ever posted be unclear, feel free to contact me about it.

I'd like to end this post with the following:
I hereby apologise for any of my past and even future posts (which I will try to prevent) which seem offending to anyone.

Should I ever cross the line, feel free to comment me on doing so, in the end, people learn by having their mistakes corrected.

Yours,
Ikkerens

I'm glad to see your intention in the community were good. There were some posts in the past that caused me to lose trust. Afterward there were some others, which seemed out of place, but weren't, but unfortunately, I never got the chance to have a clarification of them, since they were posted, then you would disappear for a month, and due to past experiences online and offline, I figured out you might have done them on purpose or without being careful at all. I wish the clarification would have come two and half a month ago, but I am glad it has come out, now, so I and other people understand. I am also glad that you allowed me to solve the matter with you instead of simply going away. Now that I know you have no bad intentions behind your posts I shall be able to trust you more. The only advice I would like to give, though, is to try to not visit the forums while being drunk, although in some cases, that might be hard I guess. I only ever got drunk two times in my life and the first time, I went on IRC to chat and could barely type at all x.x (that was 3 years ago).

Apology accepted and I am sorry if I jumped to conclusions too fast regarding some of your posts. Unfortunately I tend to react based on past bad experiences I had online and IRL, and I tend to not take any chances anymore with what happened in the past. Another issue is language barrier and the fact text doesn't transmit emotions well (and real trolls makes this even harder to interpret)

I personally do not hold grudges when a person does something bad and acknowledge he did wrong, too, so don,t worry about that either. We hope you stick around on the forums.

One thing i always try to do when i post something that could be taken either way is to add a :), :D, :P, or >:D  to let people know its less serious (not offensive)

I think its been working because i am nolonger getting warned of being banned due to trolling :P  (<--there's an example)

The posts concerned were pretty spread out. Ikkerens usually went inactive for several weeks before posting again, but unfortunately, those posts occured at the end of each of his inactivity periods, which made it kinda suspicious. I'M glad it could be sorted out, though.

According to his Omnimaga profile, he isn't the author, because he only has a regular TI-84 Plus

Yeah you can only use premade templates, which is why almost all freewebs sites are the same. It's good if you have zero experience in site creation but otherwise, I kinda prefer other free hosts that lets you upload your own stuff, even if there's a banner ad or it is not that fast. Good thing I could pay for hosting. Had I still stayed at my mom's home, Omnimaga would still be using Invisionfree today, despite what happened with them.

Bravo!

Well solved! I am now also aware of the sensitivity in these forums or on certain topics so I know what I can and can not say. I had a tough time getting used to it, I always tend to play things by my own rules. Maybe that is arrogance, who knows...anyway it isn't appreciated here so I'll just adjust and I think I am getting better at it lately...

I now tend to re-read what I post alot more and if I am undusre about one or more sentences then I just add a warning in parenthesis.
I think I also have a better feel of where the borders lay on this forum, some forums are stricter on double posts for example and other forums are looser on it. In the same way some forums leave their members saying what they want and I myself did only just recently realize how nasty those places are, really. I know quite some fora in my native language that are being left nearly unmoderated and are therefore quite harsh...

It depends on what you want a neat forum but very strictly moderated or a very loose and free forum but therefore, most of the time, nasty and harsh...

Yeah the hardest part is trying to draw the line about what is allowed and what is not. On most TI forums you would not be allowed to flame and had to respect others opinions, but sometimes those rules were not enforced. I also saw rather narrow-minded and discouraging comments toward some people projects and the author would eventually disappear. Although criticism is the best way to improve, I think there are ways to say it in ways that won't discourage the author. However every forum has their own set of rules, so at some places they may be more loose on that. One thing we are more loose about at Omnimaga is swearing, though, and on IRC, the discussion is sometimes slightly NSFW :P. 5 years ago I could not find another calc forum that was both friendly and calc game-oriented at once, which is why I set those rules on Omnimaga like they are. Sadly, I kinda stopped focussing on this after my 5 months hiatus in 2007, people took bad habits as the community was going downhill then this, combined with other problems, killed Omnimaga, which is why the day I restarted, I promised myself to make sure it remains friendly. It has worked so far in overall. Of course it's inevitable stuff will happen, though, especially with a large userbase.

Of course with language barrier and text limitations, it makes things a bit harder, though. I, myself, accidentally offended people on the forums with some comments, before, because I misworded something.

It's a reference to the Matrix trilogy. Agent Smith is the bad guy in it.
