Post by: TheCoder1998 on March 24, 2014, 03:27:59 pm
title says it all

i got into calc programming when i got a ti83 from my math teacher
at first i thought i could play games on it instantly :P

In seventh grade I needed a new calculator since I was taking Algebra 1. I then went to Target and bought a TI-84+ SE (Good choice in hindsight) for full price (not a good choice in hindsight). Later, I got Cave Story on it and proceeded to break it after getting an ON-Break and Goto-ing. Later, I made a few math solvers and sold them for fifity cents. Later, I became a god at my school for bringing Fruit Ninja. I still manage to impress my friends with little gems I make.

hm, I already posted a very long explanation on that here: http://www.omnimaga.org/private-matters/my-2-year-omnimaga-anniversary/

I think Pimath made a topic about that already. ;)

My teacher had a few ti-83s and 84s, and I took to them immediately, eventually finding out I could program them, even though I had no idea how, but my dad knew and I learned from him.

In 2000, I had a friend in English class who was one grade higher than me in everything else  but  failed English, so in maths he already needed a graphing calc and he sometimes played games in English classes once we were done with our work. This is when I wanted to buy a 83+ to get into programming. (I finally bought my calc in July 2001)

I dunno, I got a TI-83+ back in 2005 in grade 9 and minutes after I unwrapped it I was already trying to figure out how the PRGM button works.

There are probably 5 or 6 topics about this actually anyway, including some from 2005. :P
Title: When and how did you get into online communities for calcs/progamming?
Post by: Princetonlion.tibd on June 14, 2014, 05:29:35 pm

I started programming this year (in 6th grade) for TSA when school started. I started with the Norland calculator robot and wondered what all the other commands did. I searched it up, and found a tutorial on Ticalc. At the time, I didn't know what Ticalc was, only the tutorial. Some time later, I explored the site and found out how great it was. At the same time, one of my worst friends bragged to me about his skills and accounts. I discovered Cemetech from him, and from Cemetech, Omnimaga.
I'm 12 right now, and am one of the best TI-BASIC programmers in my school. I'm moving to Santa Barbra, so that might not apply there :(

That's a short summary. I might write a longer one during the summer.

A few days before the beginning of the school year, I got the TI-84+CSE. My brothers previously have had them and said that you can play games on them. Naturally, I was interested. However, when I looked at the package, it said "Programmable Calculator". I was looking for an excuse to learn programming stuff, so I was excited. I got home, looked up how to program on TI Basic Developer, and started to program. I taught one of my friends to program in the middle of the school year, but he has yet to show me a full game.

I taught 5 people this year
1 says he has no time to keep learning (which I doubt)
1 has lost contact with me (triplet with the first)
1 has quit
1 has also lost contact with me
1 thought he could do better than me

Most of them were taught by me on how to use the Norland calc robot.

I started out making games in basic. I never figured out why the games got slower with every iteration of the main loop. Perhaps because I used goto's inside the main loop.

I became interested in getting sound of the device, but I only knew basic, so I wrapped the antenna of an FM radio around my calculator and tuned to a noise channel. You can hear the cpu activity on that channel. By using different basic commands I made simple soundeffects for in my game. Sadly I lost these games. They were pretty rudamentary, but it worked!

I've always been interested in programming. I think I started using vbscript in MS office, had a lot of fun pranking my parents with false error messages ;D After that I dabbled in Scratch, javascript, c# and python, but I could never really get a grasp of how it worked (remember I was about 11 at the time). Then when I was 14, a classmate of mine got his brother's 84+, and because his brother was also a calc geek my classmate knew you could play games and program on the calc. Next year everyone in class had to get a 8[3/4](+), so obviously I started messing around with TI-Basic (which was, according to the other classmate "very much alike javascript" o.o). Because I was really interested to learn everything about my newly-acquired 84+, I went to look on the internet for tutorials. I passed over Omni a few times but ignored it. Then I found ticalc.org with quite a few getting started in Basic tutorials, and so I got into calc programming. I also discovered that there was another guy at school who also programmed his calc, so I was with him a lot. He told me about Axe and Omnimaga. Thanks for that LordConiupiter :D
So now you know how I ended up programming my calc and how I found Omni.

Note that I didn't start calc programming until I was 14-15ish. Also at first I only played games on my calc. Wolf3D84 is amazing.

that reminds me, I should really retry LordConiupiter's RPG from early 2010. I didn't have the chance to play for very long except during contest judging, since I spent most of the time trying to install the game :P.

Oh I should probably mention that I got banned from Omni because I was considered a duplicate account for LordConiupiter because I had the same IP as him (due to school internet) and the first thing I did was voting on his RPG :P

I got my first glimpse at calc programming from Jake the Snake, an 83+ BASIC game that's almost definitely on ticalc somewhere. That was the first time I really thought about how one would go about making programs. I was about 8 years old at the time.

Unfortunately it was my older sister's calculator, so I didn't get to mess with it much for a few years after.

January 1998 - I got my TI-83 for school that year. The first thing I did was explore the functions, and within a few minutes realised it was programmable (I'd never done any programming up until this point). I then made a "Guess-a-Number" game.

Shortly after starting back at school, the infamous DrugWars game was going around, which led me to trying more coding, such as a very primitive Pong game, and not too long after, my first version of Alien Breed (in BASIC), which ran at about 0.125fps (yes, 1 frame every 8 or so seconds). It also took a few minutes to load a level, as levels were stored as bit data in PIC's and loaded into a matrix.

16.5 years later and I'm now 32 and still occasionally coding calc stuff :P

And you're still here!  :hyper:
It took me 3 days to find the prgm button on a TI-83+ (then I googled it). I got it for programming only :P

It is a while, but there have been a lot of breaks in between where I've either been too busy or had no motivation for calc coding.

I actually had no idea it was programmable until I saw the [PRGM] button, then looked in the manual and found that it had the built-in BASIC language. It was a joyous moment :P

Fun fact: I visited your site quite a lot way back then. I remember it was one of the only few sites still available on calc.org until it finally shut down for good. I saw it was no longer updated so I assumed you were gone like many older coders, but then Banchor the Hellspawn arrived. That reminds me, I really need to give this game a try at one point, since I now have a TI-86. A color remake would definitively be cool.

Oh I should probably mention that I got banned from Omni because I was considered a duplicate account for LordConiupiter because I had the same IP as him (due to school internet) and the first thing I did was voting on his RPG :P
Haha I remember that. I think I thought that LordConiupiter was attempting to fraud the Omni contest via multiple accounts at first before I realized your post style was quite different and you were really another member. However, since there were risks of abuse of the vote system I decided to require 20 posts to vote in polls (and a year later, on post ratings too).

Mmm, it would, wouldn't it..  [-.-]~

Yeah there was a big gap of inactivity in there somewhere, well, more so just me not actually completing / releasing much, I think between 2002-2005. After that, generally every 2 years or so I would do something and then go into hiding again, until 2012 when I did AB5. Since then I've normally had something on the go, or only taken some short breaks of 2-3 months here and there.
