Social Networking
« on: November 26, 2010, 03:39:24 am »
Hello,
I've noticed that there has been a large increase in the number of social networks the calculator community has branched out to.  For example, I follow and am followed by most of the community, and am Facebook friends with 10 or 12 members.

Yeah it got pretty popular over the past 5 years. At one point it kinda harmed the community, though, because people would spend 10 hours a week updating their Facebook profile. Now people use FB and Twitter to relay community updates so now social networks kinda have an opposite effect.

It would be better, I think, if we had a SMF mod installed that allowed us to share topics on Facebook and Twitter, though. That could attract more visitors. However, such mod would be hard to maintain as FB always change their designs.

Also, some people suggested an Omni fb group before. I was against it because I feared it would dillute the activity due to people posting there instead of Omni, but I think it's possible to make groups read-only or something, so that could maybe work, now.

I'M not part of Twitter, though. I thought about joining, but I don't update my profiles on social network sites often enough to register on multiple ones.

I don't do any social networking because I personally don't see much of a point to it and too many people I know have become addicted to it (and I'm already addicted to Minecraft, so I don't think I could even have the time for another addiction).

I am a social networker, not an addicted one, just post a quote in Facebook every three days.

A few years ago, I always said "FACEBOOK and Hi5 are stupid, don't use it, it sucks so much, dumb people use it"
I was really mad at social networkers, I yelled at my friends (mainly girl) for it.

Now, I think Facebook is cool, it has a goal, socialitismentization (or however you say noun of social).

Tsk tsk, bad qazz :P

Anyway, can Youtube be considered like a social network? Because I personally find this is a nice showcase site if you can do videos. Omnimaag got a lot of new people from my calc videos.

I'm not sure, I kinda prefer to stick with one social network for now. Seems like most people use Facebook nowadays. I personally don't put all my personal info there either.

Well, I often see people putting their home address and phone number on their FB profile. I would be scared of doing that, even if it was just visible to friends. Right now, you have my city, real name, age, province and country, that's all.

Btw Myspace seems to really be going downhill. Now they did like Youtube: forcing us to switch to the new profile design. Youtube new design improved, though, but right now the new Myspace design is all but working. It won't even save my changes and it totally ruined my bio section. When I feel like doing so, I'm just gonna delete the entire bio box, upload 10 of my songs in their own playlist box then post a notice that I'm done with myspace and find me on Youtube/Omni if they want to keep up to date with my songs. Not that much people bothered to check, anyway. I got 7000 views in 3 years, while on Youtube my vids got a total of 200000+ views.

/\yeah, i noticed(and was displeased by) the change to myspace as well.

as far as social networking goes, i don't really mind what people see because i don't have much to hide(and am doubtful that any internet creeps are going to bother driving to my house when there are plenty of people to creep around in their own neighbourhoods. i tend not use that type of site often, though, because people i dislike use them and are constantly trying to add me/getting angry when i don't(or post stupid crap all over when i accidentally do). my elder brother (who is extremely paranoid XD) deleted all of his accounts on facebook, etc for just that reason(he was a teacher at my school, actually, but a bunch of students [as well as other teachers] there are dicks and were constantly harassing him until he finally quit[to back up my previous statement, here is a quick list of things which have been thrown at me this year by students and teachers:
Code: [Select]
one (1) copy of St. Augustine's Confessions
four (4) full bottles of water
one (1) partially-eaten kit-kat bar
two (2) hand-fulls of rocks
one (1) napkin (taped shut) filled with ovaltine
two (2) pouches-worth of capri sun juice
two (2) basketballs
one (1) empty water bottle
one (1) apple
one (1) brick
])

Ouch, a brick. Hope you didn't got hurt.

But Omnimaga should really have a Facebook page (not a group, though), like Cemetech does, so people can like Omnimaga and have Omnimaga news in their Facebook feed.
