Title: Stop motion LEGO animations from the '80s
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 11, 2012, 05:38:12 pm: I wonder if anyone ever saw or remember this? :O

You probably saw a lot of Lego videos using frame by frame animation on Youtube before. However I did not realize there was stuff like this way back in the '80s. Anyway I thought this was kinda cool and old skool at the same time so I decided to post this.

There are a few more sports Lego animations and I bet there were a few other series not related to sports but I didn't search much yet.

Yeah, I've seen a stop motion once, and they're pretty fun. I'm waiting for the day that I'll make my own(not with lego).

Stop motion animation was quite popular back then. As for how long something like this takes to make: it is a very long process. For a 5 minute video, I'm sure there were quite a lot of man hours put in. That of course also depends on how many people were working on it.

Also when taking pics you need to use a tripod and make sure to not accidentally hit/move it so the camera doesn't shake so bad. Also be careful with lightning. Eg you can't film this in Quebec during Winter without using artificial light, since the lightning would constantly change at a rapid rate during the movie.

However with those older movies it must have taken even more work. They move at like 24 FPS while most Youtube vids moves at 3 fps O.O

I made a few stop motion videos, and they ran somewhere between 20 to 30 frames per second, and one two minute video only took about a week, spending an hour each day.
But this one is by far the largest set that I have ever seen on a YouTube video, and each of the many characters are moving.

If I ever dig up my legos from years ago, I might attempt at making such video one day, although it would be short. I would try to only use standard legos and not do like in this video like they did the hockey rink boards, unless I had the appropriate pieces to do so. I saw people "cheat" by making carton-based landscapes. It seems cooler when the entire video relies just on legos and the base.
