Title: The Piano Deity of Omnimaga?
Post by: Dapianokid on April 21, 2013, 08:52:54 pm
Please, vote for the best pianist! Post your videos here, in this topic, and they will be included in the header.
Dapianokid (Ian Moore): The resident Rachmaninoff rocker.

pimathbrainiac: Our resident Jazz musician!
[ Invalid YouTube link ]
epic7: The masterful Chopin fan!

Willrandship (William Shapley): Last but not least, a late entrant but truly remarkable pianist!

Before you vote, GO THROUGH THE TOPIC because they HAVE other videos they would like you to see!
Dapianokid's video is the only one he submitted. This is to avoid any... Unfair advantage on his part.
Any reference to the Turkish March is null.

EDIT: RECOUNT guyz. :P
Also, please don't vote for yourselves, guys.

BEGIN!

Meh. I don't have any video of me playing piano. I stopped playing regularly back when YouTube wasn't as popular. But I was a god back then.

Sharps are better for fast pieces. Less mass.
Title: Re: The Piano Deity of Omnimaga?
Post by: Dapianokid on April 22, 2013, 07:07:03 pm
Yes, in my opinion keys with more sharps or flats tend to fit under the hands better.

They're definitely more difficult to sightread, though. The music notation we use is aimed at relative pitching, not absolute key location, for efficiency.
Title: Re: The Piano Deity of Omnimaga?

I know jazz sight reading is different. It's closer to how people  think playing guitar...

I've never really composed something for solo piano that I actually am happy with :P
Someday, I'll get it :P

Wow, that video... As if they individually weren't hard enough... combining 3 together? O.O O.O O.O O.O

I'll get a video sometime, once I get a good chance to record.
I don't really have anything in too much of a performing condition, but I'll get something :P

I predict this happening:
Dapianokid: The resident classical pianist
Pimathbraniac: The resident jazz pianist
Epic7: That other classical pianist :P

I know that this is not piano, but here's me playing the piece I'm doing for solo marimba.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/w71f2t3prvwwr4y/100_1607.MOV

This is one of the worst runs of the piece I've had, but I was fatigued from practicing, so... yeah...

Title: Re: The Piano Deity of Omnimaga?
Post by: Dapianokid on April 23, 2013, 04:37:01 pm
Rhombicuboctahedron, this isn't my worst.
My worst is of a significantly more difficult piano piece and I had already performed in three other places early that morning. It was the finale, and I thought that I was going to be ready and I wasn't. I had a memory lapse and it threw me off.

The piece is "Concert Paraphrase Turkish March Volodos" if you wanna youtube it.

This one?

That is absolutely ridiculous O.O

I managed to record some pieces I'm working on.
Here's a beethoven sonata

And a Chopin Nocturne

I'm still working on cleaning them up for performance, but this should suffice for here :P

Okay, so I gave all of your performances a listen. Here's my feedback;

Dapianokid: From a technical standpoint your playing seems very good. However, it comes off as a bit mechanical to me and seems to lack something. I can't quite put my finger on what though.

Pimath: Your playing style seems the most laid back. You were just chillin and bangin out that improv like nobody's business. Very cool. The marimba playing was very sweet as well.

epic7: My favorite. Although you were focused you seemed quite at ease. I enjoyed watching you play as well as listening to you. Very nice!

*Edit* Also, you guys should check out some of the stuff from Final Fantasy IX by composer Nobuo Uematsu. There are some really beautiful piano pieces on there and I'd love to hear you guys give them a try. :)

Examples:

Thanks for the feedback! I tend to model my playing after a more Bassie or Monk style (laid back and easy on the left hand), as opposed to a Chick Corea style (really complex, and really intense). It's good to know that people see me as I try to be.

I'm going to put up a ii7/V7/IM7 soon. Those are pretty fun.

If you want, I can arrange a Touhou for 8 hands, and we can get together and do this. Note: It's really only fair to do it for 16 hands, but I can do 4 parts. :) I'll sacrifice for the team! haha

In light of new evidence, I have to change my vote. Will, your playing is excellent and you seem extremely comfortable with it. It seems as natural as walking. How long have you been playing? Also, added you to the poll. :)

Next time you should sit on the piano at the end of the Pirates of the Caribbean :P

I've been playing for almost 8 years myself, although admittedly I didn't have too much interest in playing during the earlier years :P
Title: Re: The Piano Deity of Omnimaga?
Post by: willrandship on April 26, 2013, 08:46:02 pm
I don't sit on the pianos anymore. It hurts their legs, and the strings.

On a side note, the piano I used while I lived at home for 10+ years is in dire need of having the hammer felt replaced. Its worn down to the red part on lots of the keys.
Title: Re: The Piano Deity of Omnimaga?
Post by: Dapianokid on April 26, 2013, 09:04:22 pm
I don't sit on the piano anymore, either.
It hurts me to hear it.

Will, I understand. I've broken a few strings on a well-made piano, so yes I felt like a truly dedicated pianist :)
My hats off to you, my friend! I'm relearning how to play piano as we speak, and that's why I don't have any newer videos. You can probably tell that I do not have the ease or mastery you have. But I do have significantly more potential and capability, and determination. You're looking at the next Marc Andre Hamelin :)

I'll update the polls! You're certainly going to win, and in fact I'm voting for you. :)
Title: Re: The Piano Deity of Omnimaga?
Post by: willrandship on April 26, 2013, 11:05:06 pm
I have broken a few strings just from playing, but in fairness they were several decades old at that point.

I'm more proud of breaking two hammers. They're the easiest to fix, since you're just splicing wood.

I wasn't expecting this much of a reaction, to be honest. Those recordings have lots of mistakes :P

Mine has a lot of mistakes, too. Plus, I mean I look like I'm dying because of how much energy I'm using. Relearning the piano has made it so natural for me lol.

epic7, I can indeed play it, but I am not as relaxed or as free to emote as he is.

Lol we should start a new one of these. Cause I've never seen this topic before, but I'd definitely like to show off.

I've got a lot of stuff to play, but unlike a lot of the others here. I do pieces that are either REALLY fast, written by me, or are from video games.

My main pieces are : Skyrim (arranged myself), Halo 3 unforgotten, Halo 3 One Final Effort, Halo 3 ODST Another rain, A lot of really fast improv (my favorite), and Mine cart madness from Donkey Kong Country.

Anyone want to see them?

But hey, I'll learn it again just because... right?  :P
