Today is CISPA Blackout Day
« on: April 22, 2013, 11:57:50 am »
Many of you may know about SOPA and ACTA.

http://www.cispaisback.org/

Seriously guys, we need to stop this! CISPA passed the House.

Today is CISPA awareness day.

Also blackout day, but no one seems to have blacked out any sites.

What sucks is if CISPA fails, then they just rename it then try to pass it again x.x

I think they know the internet. Everyone is too lazy to do anything.

True. Just blacking out a website won't do anything. The only thing that could work that way is if a big enough site like Google, Facebook, Youtube or Twitter decided to shut down not just for one day, but until the CISPA/ACTA/SOPA are officially dead, with promises that they won't be back under a new name, then maybe the government might change his mind, since just 10 minutes of Google downtime is enough to impact stock exchange.

Even massive real life protests would probably not do much unless they disrupted the economy or most people's lives or were as violent and massive as Arab Spring. The issue is that many people don't care enough about their Internet rights to make a huge deal about it, especially considering just 20 years ago, almost nobody could access the Internet and people lived their lives fine.

People will never stop trying to control the internet.  They already do to some extent too.

Luckily we as a people will never stop getting around the barriers they put up or even preventing them from putting them up in the first place.

Bills like this will get through at some point or another it's just a matter of when and how bad it really is going to affect us.  Although I don't like being controlled on the internet I think that it's bound to happen.  When it does I'm sure many people will protest including me.  The people will always win.  And if all else fails, there is a black market right, why can't there be a black internet if there already isn't one?

A black market internet would be nice, assuming it involves getting connected to it. WHat if in the future someone decided to do a massive network that allow people to connect to the Internet for free from almost anywhere in the world, legally, if that doesn't exist already? If most people could get online for free, with less restrictions, maybe that might finally give the incentive to ISPs to reduce their prices? I mean, we are in an era of public wi-fi everywhere, even in public transit vehicles, yet we still have to pay $29.95 a month to have a decent Internet connection at home. Even essential but very old services such as a residential phone line are still not free.

If the user facilitates his own infrastructure then it's perfectly legal to have your own free network service. The problem is that you need to set up a connection to a network. If you don't have a very long ethernet cable or very very powerful wifi you won't be able to reach peers on the other side of the world even with a net of users to relay your data. Your best option is to go to a place where they have free wifi and tap into the internet as you told.
