I hope that this community can be mature enough to handle such discussions in the future
I doubt it can. Those who discuss (and I'm talking about a real discussion here, not some monkey diarrhea-throwing competition) matters such as religion on a forum are not mature enough in the first place. That's the impression I have gotten, but I'm sure it's more than just an impression.

Holy necropost batman! O.O

Anyway on your last point Hoffa, do you remember how groups of religious and non-religious people flagged each others' videos, getting them shut down? As for your comment I think it remained intact, though, since Omni doesn't delete posts themselves, but yeah the thing is on Omnimaga you keep religion out of the site and there's no reasonable accomodations that will be made for any member (special privileges given to a member due to a certain motive, or disallowing everybody to do something just because of one person). Everyone online just got strong views about this and you're inevitably gonna offend some people from one or the other group. This is sad because in real life, we sometimes make jokes about religion and nobody really mind much, the most notable example recently being stuff related to http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/7559128/catholic-church-ad-asks-prayers-montreal-canadiens

Most importantly, however, regardless of each individual's opinion about something, Omnimaga disallows any form of singling out of entire groups of users in any form, such as constantly bothering them about how they are (which could be considered as harrassment) or treating them as inferior beings. We're all humans after all.

As for people who starts religion discussions online, usually they don't even realize how bad it can turn out. It can be someone new to forums/IRC, someone who loves debates or in some rare cases, someone trying to troll (or getting people to troll) then grab a popcorn bag afterward or somebody who complains suddenly about something or someone based on non-religious/religious motives.

Just to clarify some things since I noticed I recently got an up-rating in this thread. It's an old thread that I made after an other time something similar happened.

Yeah for some odd reasons, there was a recent upsurge in necroposting lately... <_<
