Title: Types of Cell Phones
Post by: BlakPilar on August 10, 2011, 12:43:54 am
Which type of cell phone do you use? I.e., Windows Phone, Droid, iPhone, Blackberry, other, etc.

I mainly want to know to see how many Windows Phone users there are on here. This can help for anyone who develops for it, so we can help each other debug and whatnot (same for Droid, iPhone, etc.). I'm looking into learning XNA so I can make a game for Windows Phone (7), because I'm hopefully getting one soon ;D

I just got a droid x2 like 3 days ago, and I must say it's pretty nice. I'm trying to get a few cool apps out to pay for my data plan ;D (Stupid verizon)

I want the Droid 2 by Motorola. I can't say I would like a Windows phone necessarily.

My best friend's brother has a Droid. A lot of my friends and others in my school have an iPhone (though only one actually somewhat develops for it). There's only one other person that I know of at my school who has a Windows Phone 7, who isn't into programming at all.

I'm mainly getting the Windows Phone (HTC HD7) because we're signing up with Tmobile soon. Plus, I must admit: I'm somewhat of a "Micro$oft Fan-boy".

EDIT: Droids are cool, but I want a phone I can develop for NOW. I missed out on the programming courses for my school as a freshman, so I don't know any Java right now. I learned VB.NET by myself and learned VB6 from the intro course last year. I'm also currently self-learning C# and other major points of programming (floating and fixed point math, memory management, etc.), but I understand about 95% of how XNA gaming works, so I think I'll be okay. I just need an artist... >.>

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#Mobile_devices (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#Mobile_devices)

This will probably change as more phones with WP7 are released.  Nokia is dropping SymbianOS for WP7. (http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/11/rip-symbian/)  The problem for Android now will probably come from the patent lawsuits that MS and Apple will try to use to shut down or cripple the  operation.

Java and C# are similar enough.  The jump would not be as apparent as say, assembly to Lua.  The annoying part would be jumping from the XNA framework to the Android API.

edit:  The chart on wikipedia is almost a year old.  Couldn't find a better source quickly. (http://www.tomsguide.com/us/WP7-windows-Phone-iOS-Froyo-comScore,news-12104.html)  Basically, in the past 3 quarters, Android overtook iOS and Symbian basically began to disappear.  This is part of the reason why Nokia is ditching Symbian for WP7 in their smartphones.

Yeah, I know. C++ > Java > C#, right? And yeah (again), I've fooled around with the Android API a bit before (with very limited knowledge of Java).

There should have been an option for "Not owning a smartphone."
There is; it's called "Other (feel free to specify)" :P

I have what Hayleia calls a "sillyphone" right now, and it's not bad. When texting, it's helped me memorize which letters are on which keys :D

I used to have a Juke, and I'll be damned if it wasn't the hardiest phone I ever saw. It was submerged in about 5 feet of water for at least a few minutes, and all I had to do was dry it out and pop in a new battery. It was going strong for at least a year after that happened. It should still work, actually, but I don't use it now, cuz I got a Droid Incredible.

I have a samsung Impression which is a feature phone which means that it has a large touchscreen, slide out keyboard, camera, browser, and the rest of that cell phone stuff but lacks main smartphone features such as a powerful OS and apps. I also don't have a data plan either so some features I can't use. The OS is quite buggy mainly when it comes to texting so several times a day I have to restart it but this is also caused by the excessive amount of texting I do each day. Luckily my contract expires in October and I'll be going with the iPhone 5 ;D

Almost everyone I've talked to that has an iPhone says that it's great at the beginning, but eventually it gets crappy. My best friend has had his less than a year and right now the vibrate button and function are kaputt, the screen is slightly unresponsive (enough to be annoying), and the calling quality has gone down since he got it.

??? "sillyphone" doesn't mean "not smartphone" but "sillyphone": mine has the screen that flashes and 3 buttons that do nothing if you press them too high.
But if my parents agreed, I would have some of those Samsung Galaxy (S, Ace or SII, not Naos)

I have a LG Envy touch smartphone, no special OS. It's pretty nice actually. It has a touch screen and a slideout keyboard. I do like having a physical keyboard. I'm looking at getting a LG Optimus with android. The Optimus is touch screen only though.

*edit* I don't think windows phones are that popular. Most people I know that have smart phones have Android on them.

Appropriated video:

Well, Android is so much better than iOS in everything, but mainly the market because it has many more free apps. What I mean is, on the iOS Store, most apps are paid, but not on the Android Market.

Free apps are the best :)

I think the iOS has an advantage too because [type something here]. Seriously, I can't think of anything that makes it better than Android. Well, I'm sure it has a few advantages :)

I have a Vodafone phone with Android 2.2.

Yeah, I know their not that popular. Idk, maybe I'll get a Droid (I'll be learning Java this school year, and I teach myself outside of it. Plus, it's not that too different from C#). Here's a list (http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/default.aspx) of the phones I can choose from. They need to be under USD$150, though.

I guess I'll do some research on the Droids, seeing as 11 (at the time of this posting) people on here have one.

I have a terrible memory, but I think it was $100 with a new 2-year contract. It's not that bad, especially considering how much smartphones are.

EDIT: Yeah, $99.99 with a new 2-year contract. See here (http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?cell-phone=Samsung-Galaxy-S-4G).

It is the same with my ipod touch. The home button is unresponsive, sometimes I press it once and it registers as a double press, bringing up the app-switcher, other times I have to press it a few times to get it to register anything. When browsing the web, the whole thing often freezes up for a few seconds, and 50% of the time, the keyboard is laggy, I can type in a whole sentence and then a few seconds later, it will only then register the keypresses all at once. Not to mention it often gets very hot when playing 3D games (130F on the outside, over the cpu area.) I have to hold my hands away from that spot so I don't trap more heat in there.
I have an Android -- a Samsung Captivate.

I would love the HTC Sensation. It has great build quality and a DUAL CORE PROCESSOR!!! But I see that your budget is limited to $150, so that might not be possible.

BTW, I have a Samsung Sensation, just like z80man. I got tetris on it using this special file transfer software. It doesn't support apps natively, though.

My dad works for microsoft, so if I get a smartphone (a possibility now that I'm starting high school) it'll probably be a WP7 one as there is an employee discount. I could probably install android on it though.

You also need it to be in the path, but I remember that on Windows, there was a secret thing to make it work on the setup, you had to go previous and then next or something.

On Linux it worked perfectly for me :) Installing programs on Windows is too hard.

Either way, congrats on your new acquisition!

My contract ends March, and I'm hoping to get an Android phone. My parents don't have any problem paying for the phone, but since they all require data plans, they don't want to pay like $70 a month for that. So my choices are to buy an unlocked (really expensive up front) or to switch to a cheaper network (I'm currently on AT&T)
Title: Re: Types of Cell Phones
Post by: BlakPilar on September 05, 2011, 04:00:33 pm
Verizon offered us 22% off of our bill a month (because of the hospital thing) which was awesome. My data plan is 2GB which is a necessary for smartphones on Verizon, but it's way more than enough, seeing as I'm only going to use it on the bus because I have WiFi at home. From going downtown and checking my email there, I've only used 0.0146GB so far lol. AT&T is $25 a month extra for a 4G smartphone with 2GB of data, which isn't bad at all. If we went with AT&T, I would'be gotten some other HTC phone because they're pretty solid builds.

I do not have a cellphone, but if I was to get one, it might be android. After all, I already have an iPod Touch. Not sure if I want a cellphone yet, though, because I do not call/receive calls often and the plans are still quite expensive, although being able to go online from elsewhere is definively cool, especially if I got a 1 hour bus ride. :P

It's quite surprising that in the modern society someone like you doesn't have a cell phone, but I guess that if you don't need it, it's ok. But can't you go to the Internet on the iPod Touch?

Darn... Oh well, I'll just have to make sure it works before I waste my time and try to debug lol.

@DJ, I plan to only have a cell phone when I go to college/get my own house. I see no need for a cell and home phone. Plus, nowadays you can use you phone as a WiFi hotspot.

Yeah I already have an home phone line, which I split the cost of with my bro. If I get a cellphone, I'll still need my home line, since my bro uses it.

It's just so friggin expensive, like $40 a month for cheapest plans here. Add this to the rent, the internet bill, power bill, etc, that's quite a big chunk of money.

Also iPod Touch won't go online unless you're near a wi-fi connection. For example, if I'm in the bus, I only get internet access during about 1 minute near the Laval Univesity.

My parents have one of those, circa like 2003 or something. The only problem is it now takes an unreasonable amount of force on the zero button for it to register so she's getting a new one. We also have another nokia that has a monochrome screen but we dont use it.

Also, my preferred carrier would be T-Mobile (which my parents use, so there is probably a family bundle or something) or Sprint, because of the fact they are smaller and have to be more competitive.
Title: Re: Types of Cell Phones
Post by: BlakPilar on September 06, 2011, 06:43:17 pm
T-Mobile was actually my first though, but their service map didn't look too promising where I live. We've had Sprint before, and we had terrible service with them. We didn't want to go with a prepaid because we had Tracfone and it got annoying with the minutes. So that left AT&T and Verizon. My best friend has had both (he's currently with AT&T) and he said Verizon was best, so that's what we went with.

Got a Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY since previous month (:
Running on latest Android (2.3.3 or smth) My first Android phone :D

My previous phone was an HTC Snap, running on Windows Mobile 6.1 I think, nothing special about that one.
The one before that was a Sony Ericsson W810i with whatever the standard SE OS was back then, it was a nifty littly phone back then, good to play Java games (how many hours I used to spend on playing games with that 5 button 'joystick' and a screen of 178*220 xD ) even the 'heavier' ones in 3D (:

Yeah, I can't wait to root it and have some fun.

Well, I'll probably wait until the warranty's gone, but then I definitely will :P

Is that the only reason you got it? (It would've been mine if I got that phone xD)

As long as you aren't like the mac sales clerk I talked to who said jailbreaking was like putting BBQ sauce on a steak before tasting it :P I can understand not jailbreaking for warranties, risk etc., but for the pride of not having jailbroken it? Really?

it's more like seeing a steak, breaking the window between it and you, and actually eating it instead of just smelling it.

Actually, its like smelling a steak through a vent in the window, breaking the window, and eating the steak.

Only it was your window, so it's totally legal :P The butcher next door is just complaining because of noise ordinances.

Another analogy: like not hacking an FX-9750GII

Also, what about the pride of being smart enough not to listen to the dumb sales clerk!

Well, considering I've never owned an apple device, I've never gotten the chance to test my intelligence in that way :P

Of course I have :P And obscene prices. And really valuable-looking (likely to get stolen because of that) cases, even if they're 10 years old.

I'll take my beige $15 case any day.

Oh, prices! Give me a second to find a place to puke.

I got my PC for $25. It boots up, shuts down, runs opera and dreamweaver. what more could you want?

Google is your best friend in that regard.

@fisch why dreamweaver when you could run something that actually teaches you HTML? :P And be more free.

@will, Dreamweaver because pretty much everything Adobe makes is amazing lol. If you already know HTML, it's very good IMO (I've tried NVU, and own DW CS5.5 and MS Expression 4 Ultimate, all paid for :P)

I agree with BlackPilar. DW is VERY useful if you already know HTML. I've tried Komodo edit, BlueGriffon (they try to get you by making you pay for addons D: ), and Notepad (LOL). also, my dad let me have his (then) Macromedia studio 8 (he didn't use it much), so it is kinda free. For JS and PHP, though, I use aptana studio 3 (free). But all in all, if someone doesn't give me the program, I don't pay for it.
