Title: Why did you learn how to program?
Post by: hellninjas on November 19, 2011, 11:09:27 pm
Read the subject!

I liked the ability to manipulate something in any way, as well as making my own games...
When I heard that the Ti-83+SE could get games on it I downloaded them and played them for a long time... *.*
I then wanted to make my own game, as a fan of rougelike's my destiny was then written... :)

How or why did you start to program? (And please don't make some kind of smart alec comment <_<)

I only started programming because butts kept bothering me to do it. I really, REALLY didn't want to, but then I finally gave in.
And now I am happy that he showed me!!!

I had a friend show me (Thundermagnet). I first showed him how I learned to display stuff, and he showed me one of his games, and I was hooked! Haven't stopped coding yet!

I started to learn because I was just intrigued. I had no intention of getting as far as I have, I just wanted a fast way to make and compute algorithms. I think the first thing I wanted to do was make a prime tester, but I cannot remember. I still use my calc often to compute algorithms, but I obviously do more than that, now ♥

I learned because I want to be able to literally tell the computer what to do, and how to do it. I was interested in the level of control over the computer that programming gave me. :D

I learned it because it was always a dream for me to try making games when I was kid. I didn't care as much about the coding as I did about the game creation, though.

After about a year of working my way through ticalc.org's featured programs (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/featured.html) list (and eventually got bored :P), I wanted to make my own.

Don't remember, it had been a while. Probably this HTML for Dummies book I got once. And/or I always been fascinated by computer and I wanted to do advanced stuff on them. Now look where I am. Professional computer scientist.

Didn't you start with calc programming Juju, or did yopu just start computer programming many years before?

I started computer programming years before I got my trusty TI-83+. And I started calc programming right after getting this calc.

Ah ok I see now, and you stopped calc programming after the calc screen broke :'(

Yeah, I pretty much slowed down. Then I tried Axe and I got a Prizm.

I hope you eventually resume Keytar Hero and finish Axeanoid, though. :P

Well, programming always fascinated me, and when I got my ti84+ for school I wanted to learn programming, and now I make games for it! :D

I only bought my calc to put games on it :P
But RACE2 a game in BASIC was really ugly (not because it was it was in BASIC, some are really great, but the used characters weren't well chosen) so I edited it !
Then I understood everything the programmer did and started to program my own games :D

I started because a friend of mine made his own (really ugly) dice-game. I wanted to make it more beautiful and extend it's features... That's how it always goes I guess.

The first program I had was http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/209/20993.html. I unlocked the code via MirageOS and tried to search in it for the "Menu(" command I knew from Ti-Basic... haha...

I bought a discarded book about HTML in the library for 0.50 euro.

I was bored and there happened to be a calculator near me. Seriously, that was it.

Pretty much it, yeah. Boredom is my greatest motivator.

I've always wanted to make games. First I tried to learn C++, but I always made stupid faults and eventually got bored. Then I got a TI 83 and I saw how easy TI basic is and started programming again. Later I got an nspire and started programming in C. But right now I'm not really motivated, I haven't programmed for weeks :(

I will now convince my friends! :P

I started programming ON CALC when my teacher taught a little bit of ti-basic to us in class. I then learned more and started making games

I checked the source code of the basic chatbot I had on my calc. Lol.

I wish my parents encouraged me to program. All my mom ever says about programming is "GET OFF THAT D*** CALCULATOR!!!!"

My mum says, Are you playing games on your calculator? Waste battery, run out very quickly....

I hate when parents don't want people to code. X.x In my case I could code fine but as long as I did not spend the entire day only doing that.

Well, ofcourse if I had a kid and he would always be on his calc, not saying anybody is, I would say something to him too.
And if you have parents who say you can't program just because they think it's like gaming just say it might help you get a job later in life. ;) :P

Unfortunately, that doesn't work in every situation. I have parents that are borderline that mentality and they claim that I'm making 'excuses'. Really, the best way of convincing them would probably be to show them what you've made and the support its gotten.

Results work wonders :P

Prizes would be convincing.

That's true. :P The most effective strategy, however, is probably to show the serious side of programming. Parents will only think, "He's just doing it to play games and have fun". I think that one needs to show the serious, adult side of programming and how they're setting themselves up for success in that environment.

Actually I started programming max 1 week after I got my calc and I started programming Axe max 9 days after I got my calc. My first program was
Spoiler For Spoiler:
THE GAME
quadratic solver xD

I started programming when I was about 14 years old and received an old 486 laptop with MSDOS 5.1 into in and broken diskette reader which wasn't standard so I never could put or take nothing from it neither change it with another one since it was not built for ages.

So as I wanted to give some use to that computer and that version of MSDOS came with QBasic pre-installed I started making some codding on that, at first some silly calculator and then a mastermind-like game which was my first "serious" program and my first ever game.

Later when I got into high school and get my TI-83 which was my sister's I quickly learn't programming TI-BASIC and made my unique versions of quadratic root solvers and tic tac toe games. They were never released online because I didn't had the proper cable, but it had some sucess all over the class. It did not proliferated over the school because most of it had casios....
