Title: 5 Albums You Should Listen To
Post by: Speler on November 29, 2007, 03:05:00 pm
Here is a list of 5 albums that I love, and think others will love too:

Animals by Pink Floyd
Animals, to put it simply, is a piece of art.  The lyrics talk about three different kinds of people (dogs, sheep and pigs).  The music is, for the most part, darker then most of the other stuff by Pink Floyd.  Animals contains some of David Gilmour's best solos and although this album contributed to the breaking up of Pink Floyd and created a lot of tension in the band, it is a great one to listen to.

Everything Goes Numb by Streetlight Manifesto
The lone ska album on this list, Everything Goes Numb is genius.  Every song is well put together and the horn lines are incredible.  The lyrics, while they may be spouted out at impossible speeds, are catchy and well thought out.

Tio Bitar by Dungen
A Swedish psychedelic masterpiece, while many (or rather, most) people consider it's predecessor Ta Det Lugnt a superior album, Tio Bitar is one of several masterpieces of an incredible musician.  While it starts out in a borderline-annoying police siren emulating guitar screech, the album goes on to play incredibly catchy melodies and great music.  Pretty much the best 'chill out' album I've ever heard.

UK by UK
The keyboards in this album are breathtaking, the solos are amazing and the music is just plain incredible.  This is a progressive masterpiece, and though it isn't as famous as a lot of other progressive albums of this time it is a simply breathtaking album.

'Til The Medicine Takes by Widespread Panic
The jam band Widespread Panic has grown a large reputation as a great jam band.  This album proves, however, that they are more then just a live band.  The first 4 tracks are by far the best, however that does not mean that the rest of it isn't good.

Hope you find something that fits your taste in this list :)smile.gif.

In no particular order...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dusted_Variations, by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollo_Armstrong (in co-operation with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enigma_(musical_project))

This is an orchestrated take on some of Enigma's works, with a very ambient and minimalistic overtone.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Ancient_Muse, by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loreena_McKennitt

Loreena takes us on a journey across the Eastern sands with themes of adventure, love and betrayal. Seriously, who doesn't like Loreena McKennit? And no, your opinion does not count if all you listen to is contemporary American rock / pop / rap. :Ptongue.gif

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adiemus:_Songs_of_Sanctuary, by Karl Jenkins (the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adiemus)

"Each Adiemus album is a collection of song-length pieces featuring harmonised vocal melody against an orchestral background. There are no lyrics as such: instead the vocalists sing syllables and 'words' invented by Jenkins." Yup. That about sums it up. Adiemus is aurally very pleasant.

Classical is like, so old-school.... Techno is the new and improved version, but you don't have to call it Techno... You could call it awesome, incredible, or even awesomely incredible or incredibly awesome! LOL.... Let's stick with Techno.....

Techno is horrible it has no soul to it, no life

Classical is the same thing, with different instruments!!!! C'mon!!!! It's not that different. An "UPDATED VERSION" must be similar to the original...

but you must agree violin and most clasical instruments sound much better giving clasical music an emotional side to it

correction: I like some Techno and some Classical. Scremo/Emo is not my thing...

P.S. wrong number of symbols after the "what now". It makes a difference. Properly it should be like my siggy, except in whatever color and font and size the statement calls for.

Edit: sure it is, neither have words, both are purely instrumental. Just using different instruments and techniques.

Techno isn't horrible by any means, some of it is actually pretty good. But to say it is comprable to Classical music is a gross mis-statment. They are made in entireley different ways for different people and reasons That's all I'm saying.

I like 3/5 of the original post ;)wink.gif, but I will add my own at a later date.

guys, let's not turn this into a spam fest, everyone has the right to like whatever they want, regardless of it it's techno, classical, rap, emo, anything else without getting bashed/flamed. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and tastes and you can say a genre sucks as a fact, you may not like it but others may like it, or vice versa.

That said techno is not in any way derivated from classical, both genres are totally different, regarding the style and the way it is produced. Now to say that techno should die of a horrible death? Wow, this means that all the 5.5 years of hard work I've put into my 50 techno songs is nothing and the entire mp3 folder should be trashed? No sir, other people liked them and like other techno too. I don't like classical very much aside from Canon in D by Pachebel and Chariot of Fire and I like classical power metal

If you guys do not stop spamming this topic, I will lock it.  I don't want to do that, because I put a lot of thought into that list.

Music is music whether you like it or not.  DJ Omnimaga puts a lot of effort into his techno music, and he deserves your respect.  Unless you have something productive to say, shut up.

hmm, imo, Techno and Classical music are vaugely comparable. Also, I have not listened to a single album in these lists. o.oblink.gif I'll have to try some.

For Classic Rock(what I listen to) I'd have to go with(these are songs):

Not much into the standard classic rock stuff anymore.  Anything rock I listen to from that era can be classified as prog really.

On my side I would go with

Best of Bonkers (various artists)
Compilation of best hits from Bonkers 1 (1996) to Bonkers 16 (2006), including some never released on Bonkers before. If you like techno hardcore I suggest this album

Bonkers 17
Just came out recently in UK. One of the best hardcore song selection

'90s Eurodance Party
If you can find this album you're lucky, because it is prbly one of the best selection of eurodance music out there (altough the second last track isn't even eurodance at all)

A twist in myth (Blind Guardian)
One of the lastest Blind Guardian power metal band album, if you're into metal

Inhuman Rampage (DragonForce)
Lastest album by Dragonforce. THeir metal style is friggin fast though so if you're into slower stuff you may not like them

My personal preference of music is very broad.  For example, my Favorites playlists on my iPod contains:But my all-time favorite song remains a techno song (at least I think), when I first heard it as a loop in an online game called http://www.addictinggames.com/smash2.html.  Put it this way: my second-most played song (apparently "Ladies and Gentlemen", by Saliva) is played ~500 times.  Smash 2 has been played about 4 times that much.

In the last 6 months.

I love that loop, and when I first heard it the first thing I did was e-mail the author of the game for an mp3 of it.

For me, it really all depends on the song itself, so I don't go by "albums".

If I get the time though, I'll look at those 5.

Dj  omnimaga likes dragonforce??? HOLY CRAP!!! While I respect the talent of their insane guitarist and bassist, I don't care for their writing style. By writing i mean all inclusive as in lyrics, bass lines riffs ect. ... the whole package. Some insane talent there though. As far as similar stuff to this if anyone like Dragonforce they shold also check out Dream theatre, Pinkfloyd, Avenged sevenfold, Judas priest and Iron maiden. All great stuff if you're into prgressiv rock or speed metal.

yeah dragonforce lyrics doesnt really make any sense to me, it almost seems like they wrote them while on drugs x.x, I mostly listen to them for the music style. Stratovarius lyrics are similar, but they make more sense than DragonForce's and rhapsody/blind guardian ones are awesome

not the best in the world though

progressive rock is much slower than speed metal, i listened to a lot of them on youtube that super speler shown me and they were very slow. Dragonforce is crazy speed.

And you may not like my music much as it is techno oriented (trance, happy hardcore, etc) and you don't like techno

what does gaga means? I assume it's a different form of saying "crazy" or "dancing", right? Sorry, I don't speak english as first language so it doesn't help x.x

And since i produce multiple styles there may be songs that some ppl will like but they will not like the rest, or vice versa. Example, some techno lover only listen to happy hardcore and not trance, and some listen to drum and bass and nothing else

I'm guessing by "gaga" he means they will like it very much.  It's (little used) slang.

Seriously, you guys should check out the main game loop of http://www.addictinggames.com/smash2.html.  I don't know what its genre is, but it's sort of a mix of DnB and Techno with piano.  Excellent stuff.

If we exclude happy hardcore and eurodance this is the kind of techno I listen too (those are my three favourite trance songs in order)

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=mE7Yzr4DoUc&feature=related
or the first song in this video:
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=um-GMygsRg4

My third favourite trance song is the second version of 7 Colours by Lost Witness, but i only found the first on Youtube

All the songs are in the 1999-2002 range btw

@Dj Omnimaga you like Stratovarius too?!? Sweet :)smile.gif You definitly have to check out Dream Theater then. They are very much like Stratovarius except their music is more varried and they are a bit more talented.
@MSR5; Examples of speed metal are Dragonforce, Iron maiden and Black label society. IE they play fast and lots of hammer ons. Progressive rock is more of like Pinkfloyd, and the bands Yes and Kansas. They may include some fast stuff but tend to have more instrumental stuff and incorparate elements from other genres.

DJ Omnimaga, they do a lot of really fast stuff.  I'm not a big fan though...

art_of_camelot, that's a completely false definition of prog.

maybe most ppl who like dream theater on youtube are more into their slow stuff then x.x

They have some  really good fast stuff too, like the album "Train of thought" for example. Most of their albums have a mix of fast and slow though. I also highly recomend listening to the album "Awake", it is my favorite one. :)smile.gif Fun fact; when looking for a new keyboard player after their original one left Jens Johansson (who enventually joind stratovarious) was one of the many who auditioned.
@Super speeler My definiton of progressive rock is wrong? I would say its a bit over simplified, but not wrong.
Title: 5 Albums You Should Listen To
Post by: Speler on December 04, 2007, 09:42:00 am
No, it's wrong.  Plenty of prog is uber-fast and it doesn't need long instrumental sections to be prog (a lot of prog just tends to have these sections).  The incorporating stuff from other genre's line is only true but irrelevant, all music does.

I have never heard any progressive rock that is as fast as speed metal, and I was using this more for descriptive purposes than anything to give a general idea of what it sounds like . I said they tend to include more instrumental stuff because usually, they do. I never stated that for something to be labeled progressive rock it had to have large instrumental sections either .
