Title: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: Nick on December 19, 2011, 04:53:34 pm
as the title says, i was wondering if some people are drummer here? or other musicians with REAL instruments (especially acoustic ones)?

i'm playing drums for 4 years now, and i started wondering if some other coders are acoustically Nspired

lol Thank you ! :D

Actually, I used to sing when I was 4 years old with my three brothers who played guitar, drums and piano. :)
We played for 5 years, managed by my father. ^^ (like the jackson five :P)
But we stopped because my brothers didn't want anymore to continue..

So I stopped singing too, then I learnt guitar, and since 2-3 months, I try to sing again ! xD

I play trumpet! :D

Here's the most recent recording of my band, playing Sleigh Ride from our Christmas concert earlier this month.

I'm first chair, so I'm on all the melody trumpet stuff.  The horse whinny at the end is me as well.

I've been playing pianos for like 12 years (yes. 12 years.)
I messed around with guitar for 1 year and I quit (piano was still better for me.)
So what I do these days is just playing random impromptu songs and if it sounds good, musescore it.

@epic I was thinking of changing the crazy hammer notes to simple half notes :P and most of the others are quite tame.

@Loulou: You did a very nice job on that piece. I really enjoy the minimalistic sound of just the guitar and your singing. I must also thank you for introducing me to Charlie Winston. I looked up the original after listening to your cover. I hadn't heard of him before this, and I really enjoyed hearing him. To hear something that is older sounding and isn't just the same old generic music you hear on the radio is quite refreshing. He seems very talented. If the rest of his music is anything like the "Like a hobo" song, I'm really going to love listening to him. ;D

*edit* Forgot to mention that I sing as well. =)

Thank you :) yes he's talented and makes some good sound !
Look at other music (I mean listen :P) like my life as a duck, kick the bucket, ...
He has just made a new album with beautiful songs too. :)

He has been well known in France with like a hobo in particular.

WOOT! I'm on drumline, so I play marching snare in my high school marching band, which is way fun. I've also played the bassoon for 3 and a half years, and the piano for 10 years.

I don't play instruments anymore, although my bro used to have a small keyboard and I thought about getting a real one in the future. I could get a guitar too but it seems pretty hard to learn and that you need lessons or something.

Besides that I only use softwares to compose so that doesn't count :P
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?

The guitar basics are pretty easy to learn, I think the hardest part is how to read sheet music and to learn chords. The rest is pretty easy, I learnt those by myself.

Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?

reading music is definatly the hard part, but if you get like 4 chords down (like E A D and G) You can play almost anything :)

I play piano and I tried violin but my string kept breaking so i gave up. And it went out of tune really easy.

I never played drums.

I don't really play drums, but I do write all the music for my band (Which includes drums). I have a good ear for music so I can play what I hear in my head for the most part. It makes composing music easier :)
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?

wow, nice.. can you let us hear some songs? i wanna hear now :) what do you play? ot do you only write?

I can play by ear on piano pretty well, but i cant play the harmony by ear.

I play bass, guitar (electric and acoustic), drums sorta, trombone, trumpet/cornet, a little sax (alto), baritone, piano, etc. My dad is a music teacher, so I followed in his steps :) And I compose for most of those instruments. And sorry I only recently got this band together, we are still working out our first ep :P but we do have connections to go record in Tennessee! :)

I play the guitar since 9 (so seven years), and to me, the hardest part was not read notes and all that stuff, but to play it, to move my hands faster enough and have a good coordination, and also to get the feeling and the knowledge for improvising.
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: saintrunner on January 03, 2012, 03:49:39 pm
You get used to hand movement and accuracy with practice
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: Blue Raven on January 03, 2012, 04:08:36 pm
Yeah, of course, but you said a few post ago that the most difficult was to learn notes and chords, and I don't find that very difficult compared to the accuracy needed. But maybe it's because I didn't took solfege lessons.
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: saintrunner on January 03, 2012, 04:11:34 pm
I said reading music is more difficult, and learning chords and stuff was easy, and as far as learning instruments its different for everyone
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: epic7 on January 03, 2012, 04:51:00 pm
I personally think learning to read music is easy :P
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: Juju on January 03, 2012, 04:57:46 pm
Yeah, learning to read music is not that bad, it's just like learning how to read.
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: Nick on January 03, 2012, 04:59:58 pm
the point of reading notes is not the reading itself, but the speed of it..
that's where i failed :c
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: saintrunner on January 03, 2012, 05:22:09 pm
Exactly Nick! Its easy to read notes.....but what is hard is the accuracy of reading music...and playing flawlessly even at fast tempos :) thats where complexity comes in, my dad (music major teacher and performer) once told me that 'Great musicians are the ones that look at music as a new language!'
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: Nick on January 03, 2012, 05:23:32 pm
true, as true as this was quite a weird double post xp but it is, and it can be hard to get that speed..

And I restarted playing piano, as I got a MIDI keyboard that plugs on the computer via USB for Christmas. Pretty fun to change the instruments with GarageBand, even installed a plugin to make 8-bit chiptunes :D

yeah I may have some troubles with that because for the past 13 years I always read everything graphically with little squares rather than notes. It doesn't say the notes name besides each row in Music Generator, just the octaves number:

Post by: saintrunner on January 03, 2012, 08:39:24 pm
Yeah that would do it! lol, habits can be quite bothersome. Since I play bass clef instruments as well as treble clef, so sometimes I mix those up :P

True, and I think I have asperger but so small compared to other family members that it's not diagnosticable. It makes it even harder to be used to changes and new stuff. I used the tool above since 2002 (except between Jan 2004 and December 2006 due to my CD stopping working).

That or constantly accidentally making the same typos even if you know how to write those words correctly.

Now that you mention it, that might explain why after 7 years of playing Starcraft, I still get supply-blocked all the time. :P
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: Juju on January 03, 2012, 08:58:33 pm
If you know how to avoid that and you never do it in-game, that's probably a sign of dyslexy. (I don't play Starcraft, so I don't know what you're talking about, therefore can't really tell.)
Title: Re: Drummers or other musicians, somewhere?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 03, 2012, 08:59:56 pm
It depends, I just can't seem to get used to avoiding it. Of course some other people have troubles with it and it requires lots of practice, but I don't know, I just have been playing for so long and even if I'm not as bad at it, I still can't avoid it completely after 8 years.
