Title: How do I make my drums sound good?
Post by: boot2490 on October 20, 2011, 11:20:06 am
I am sick of MIDI drums.
Can you suggest some VST's or samples? (Particularly VST's)

I am using ModPlug tracker, which supports VST and Samples.

Wow I didn't know Modplug supported VSTs. I should give it a try again at one point. On my XP computer I had no sound, but on this Windows 7 machine maybe it could work.

I sadly do not know of any good VST for drums, however. When I still made music in Sony ACID and Magix, I just ripped samples from MTV Music Generator and downloaded some random ones on certain sites I forgot.

As I said, Finale has some nice sounding vst drums, however I do not know how, if possible to extract these vsts for other programs.

This might be useful eventually if you ever need any drum samples, although I don't know how the project is going right now. Someone is basically ripping all 3500 samples from MTV Music Generator for those wanting to use them in other softwares. http://www.mtv-music-generator.com/index.php?topic=4379.msg20307;topicseen#new

Oh thanks for that link. That might be even more useful. I know someone posted a link to free ones before but it was ages ago, so I'M unsure if the link still works.

Now I come to think of it, there's actually not a great variety of drum sounds in Finale. There's only about 4-5 drum kits, and each set of drum kit sounds only contains about 10 vsts for cymbals, bass drums etc. I've used it in one of my compositions but I dunno if it actually sounded good or not.

PS: I would like to make some MTVMG compositions but am having some trouble starting out.

Ouch that sucks. In MTVMG there are a bunch available per category (snares, kickdrums, cymbals, hi hats, human (claps, for example), metallic, wooden and a few others), but since the software is from 1999, it lacks anything that started to exist in newer electronic songs like distorted kickdrums and snares. They're all pre-recorded samples you select in a  menu, though, not VST stuff.

As for MTVMG you might need to ask help in a separate topic here and TIMGUL, although I can't promise I would be able to help fast, since my activity is kinda sporadic and sometimes feel like crap, not to mention I don't have much patience to explain stuff X.x. If you need the manual I have it somewhere, though, scanned.
