Title: New music discussion
Post by: TIfanx1999 on February 13, 2008, 02:04:00 am
I know on the old forum some people were interested in power metal and bands like Dragon force and the like, so I though I'd share this new band I came across. The band is called Rhapsody of fire (http://www.myspace.com/rhapsodyoffireband). They are a symphonic metal band and they incorporate alot of elements of classical music into their work. Alot of their lyrics focus on fantasy, and most of the compositon is pretty intricate. If you're into Metal and dont mind alot of instrumental interludes I definitly recommend checking them out .

Ooh I remember listening to this band. If you didn't knew they were formerly known as Rhapsody. But in 2006 they added the "of fire" part (I have no idea why). However Imho the albums quality seems to deteriorate as year goes. I own all their 7 full lenght albums except the compilations with covers and the live album and I only liked the 5 first ones :(

The first 5 ones, especially the 2nd and 3rd are awesome tho and their song called Rain of a thousand flames on their 4th album of the same name is my favourite

I just found out about them. The "of fire" was added on during their most recent album to avoid copyright issues. I've heard that the 2nd or 3rd one is really good and has alot of emphasis on the classical aspect of the music. The one I happend to pick up is their 1st album, "Legendary Tales". I defenitly plan on picking up more of their stuff. Thanks for the info, That'll help me decide on which one to get next. ;)

yeah the first one was great too. The 5th one reminds me the 3rd one, but a bit more agressive.

Does anyone here listen to jazz, or know of any really good jazz bands ? I'm always trying to expand my musical intrest, but I don't really know of many jazz artists (no stations play jazz in my area, and I don't know anyone who listens to jazz here) I generally like upbeat stuff, no slow jazz elevator music stuff . Instrumental only is fine too, in fact maybe preferable in this case . Any suggestions ?

Hey Kevin, I'm really enjoying listening to the music on your myspace music. Is all that stuff from one of ur albums, or is it spread out over different ones?

THanks, glad you like it. The stuff on my profile is stuff from Omnimaga. All tunes are from my last album. You can download all my songs (about 40+) here http://www.netham45.org/omnimaga/originals/ (http://www.netham45.org/omnimaga/originals/) it has better sound quality too. I would suggest checking Nitacku's song called Journey too if you like my stuff, because it's pretty much the same style :D

Art Of The Camelot, I listen to tons of jazz (and fusion, heh).  Check out Trio Of Doom (Jaco + McLaughlin + Tony Williams = *Drool*), Béla Fleck & The Flecktones (though you already probably know them, jazz-bluegrass mix stuff.  Some of the greatest virtuoso's of our time), Dave Brubeck Quartet and John Scofield.  All of those guys are amazing!

Sorry, nothing to give you guys yet. My drummer won't be back in town for another month, so we're gonna try to do a recording then.

Yeah... to be honest I'm not all that proud of the Pass That recordings. I guess I'll have to redo them eventually XD.

New Recording for everyone who want's to hear what my crappy guitar sounds like when I'm doing a jam session. I'm thinking about turning this into a chorale for two guitars, but I'll probably play it on one and just combine the two parts (dumb down one half of it, of course). Anyways, here's my jam session from a few minutes ago:

here (http://jincs.dyndns.org/downloads/Chorale.mp3)

**NOTE: Didn't feel like borrowing a good guitar or sounds recording setup, so it sounds pretty horrible. Just close your eyes and plug you ears when you get to the accidental feedback parts :(

**EDIT**
Apparently, I should have listened to the final mp3...it seems to be playing too fast (though I wish I could play that fast). So just picture the same song, but a lower octave and about half as fast as it really is :)

One day I should try to get a guitar, it seems so much fun messing around ^^

Maybe I could do an insane remix of my hardcore song DSOTM.

Nice Jincs. I hope you can find some better quality recording equipement soon :)

Btw is there guitars/amp that can be plugged directly into the PC for maximum recording quality? Are they quite expensive?

You can just use the cord from the guitar + a connector from the guitar plug to audio.

Audacity can also be good, but I think you need to download an external plugin to create mp3s

I used Audacity. And yes, you have to download the lame_enc.dll so you can export mp3's :( But I'm gonna try out that MyMp3 and see if I like it->it looks pretty... :P

Audacity makes rather low quality recordings unfortunately.  I'm going to pick up an mbox 2 later this week, but they are quite expensive :( (wouldn't be able to afford it without gig money).

I have other software what I just haven't gotten around to learning how to use yet:

Cakewalk SONAR LE
Steinberg Cubase LE
Ableton Live Lite 4
Steinberg Wavelab Lite
IK Multimedia Amplitube LE & T-RackS EQ
SFX Machine LT
E-MU Proteus X LE

They came with my sound card, but I don't have a clue where to start with them (aside from Google, but I'm lazy). But I've heard that they're all supposed to be pretty good. Eventually I'll get around to figuring them out. But I think I should learn how to play guitar first :P

Not if you know how to set it up properly in Preferences (there's a tab where you can adjust the bitrate from 16 to 320 kbps for mp3). My entire music was recorded with Audacity

IMHO, it makes relatively low recordings (I do know how to set it up).

To be fair though, it's not Audacity that causes this but the hardware being used.

oh ok, i was wondering. Audacity isnt supposed to do low quality sound. Else it's your comp/hardware

Maybe the recording isnt very good though, but it's good for recording sound from inside the PC, such as Youtube video sound

The main issue is the conversion from analog to digital.  Without good equipment you lose a lot... which is why I'm getting the mbox 2 really.

The sound card I've got seems to work ok (Creative Professional E-MU DSP 0404), but not quite as good as I would want it to. Though, I'll never get the quality I want without a 100% analog equipment setup (AKA an analog mixing board w/ cassette recording + a cassette -> CD burner)
Title: New music discussion
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 25, 2008, 03:51:00 am
true, but with cassette you will get low bass and some buzz noise in the background, right?
Title: New music discussion
Post by: JincS on February 25, 2008, 10:09:00 am
Occasionally, but if you beef up the bass in the mixing board a bit, and record everything at really low volumes, it usually turns out quite nicely. Of course, you have to find the right volume level to record to cassette to and be able to hear it clearly, AND be able to amplify the volume to a comfortable level when you convert it all to CD.

Can anyone say "Take 74, from the top!?!"

I don't understand what you mean by "Take 74, from the top!?!" x.x

Meaning that it took 73 tries (retakes) to get what they had, but it was not as good as they wanted so they are doing another take :P
