Title: Watcha Been Listening To?
Post by: Speler on October 05, 2008, 03:58:12 pm
So yeah, what have you been listening to lately?

Since I was invited to open for Sonic Boom Six I've been listening to them a ton lately, specifically the album Arcade Perfect which is amazing (yeah, if you're in the area check us out the day after thanksgiving in Danbury, CT with Big D, Sonic Boom Six, The Pilfers, Bomb The Music Industry, and The Tri-State Music Conspiracy (as well as some lesser known groups)).

One of my favorite bands Dungen just came out with an album 4.  It's not as good as there past two albums Tio Bitar and Te Dut Lungt it but has some great tracks.

I'm going to see Streetlight Manifesto twice this weekend so I've been listening to them a bit.

I've yet to miss a Soundhouse show, a local soul band, and have been playing there demo on repeat.

I recently got the new Dragonforce album. Even if their songs are sometimes tool-assisted (especially guitar solos), meaning they aren't very good live, I still like the sound being produced. However the new album is so different so someone who prefered the previous DF album styles will not like the new style that seems a bit like a tribute to video games. Heck, even the cover looks like a video game cover. Music wise, I'm talking about some songs having 8 bits sounds in them

Besides that nowadays I mostly listen to electronic dance music either made by random people or I listen to older stuff. I still listen to commercial UK hardcore though

The first two links are to an interesting a capella group that uses their voices to replicate instruments.

The next several links are links to people that create music using mario paint composer (A modified computer version of the mario paint's midi edior that allows for a few more options)

Iv'e also been listening to some Frank Zappa, but I have no links for that :( .

*edit*  @ Kalan_vod: Not all mainstream bands are bad, granted it seems a large majority are... But sometimes the general population does "get it" when it comes to music :). So what "horrible" mainstream bands have you been listening to? ;)

KANSAS!! I love Kansas! I basically only listen to prog rock (e.g. Kansas, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc), but I've trying other things :D.

The only problem I have with some mainstream musical bands or artists is that people get brainwashed in the way that they only think this style of music should exist, so when an artist, especially those who make songs for free, release a new tune they dislike it as soon as it sounds a bit too different than what they are listening to. Also when it come to the time to get signed, artists who don't do mainstream stuff gets singled out, no matter how good their stuff is. I even heard about cases where artists got told their stuff was awesome, but they can't sign them because it doesn't sounds like popular artists like Alex K, Basshunter, Cascada, Benni Bennasshit, Britney Spears, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc so apparently people will not be able to get used to the new style or not like it. Some not-so-mainstream genres also die in the process. I mean, you don't hear as many ska songs as you used to on the radio. I agree that some mainstream artists/bands are awesome though. Personally I like Cascada and I'm not too fond of Metallica and Maiden, but I like to listen to some of their stuff sometimes

The only reason I have a dislike for most music out there is the general lack of musical thought or skill. Maintream rock is almost entirely composed of terribly conceived music that people like merely because it does not require thought to fully perceive. Kansas, combined the beat of R&b with the classically-based prog rock to create something that I could probably listen to for days nonstop.

I've never really been a fan of the techno genres primarily because, from experience it seems to me that the whole damn thing is based on starting with a percussion loop, then slowly adding looped arpeggios and other basic patterns and then winding down for the end. Meaning, in a musical sense it has no value whatsoever. Perhaps I have been misled, and if so, please direct me towards an example that disproves my current impression. I'd love to be proven wrong (more music for me!).

techno, as people miscall it (since medias often referred to everything that is electronic dance/rave music as "techno"), is usually meant to dance or to rave. The reason why almost everything starts with percussion, then add bassline, then a part of the melody, then sometimes some vocals, then breakdown, then all melodies, then beat starts again, another breakdown, beat starts again, then melody stops then basslines too is because most artists intend to make their songs mixeable by DJs. The only real way to do this properly is to have the song start and finish with very few elements, else the transition from that song or to another one will sound horrible and they will not blend together very well. I understand this, but since 2003 most trance and house has been sounding very similar and since 2004 eurodance too. Thanks partly to Benni Benassi for house and Cascada and Groove Coverage for eurodance and to a lesser extend trance. This is why when I listen to EDM (Electronic Dance Music, which is the right term for this genre), I often listen to '90s eurodance and stuff from early 2000s. As for UK Hardcore, a lot of recent stuff has been sounding similar and I even hear remixes that sounds exactly the same than the old versions. Total lack of originality. I like to listen to recent dance/rave stuff sometimes, but I get bored fast then I go back to the older and less commercial stuff. Heck, I found myself to listen to more and more freeware music in the past 2 years because of this.

Also, with the exception of eurodance and some UK/Happy hardcore, lot of dance music have no lyrics, so if you want songs with lyrics forget about this.

EDIT: japaneese electronic music is one kind that tends to not respect laws of EDM and I tend to break these laws myself too. This cause the songs to be more original and different. However, then lot of mainstream dance music fanboys starts bashing people who listen to these songs because it's different x.x. It's like when people say every single person in the world who listen to '80s disco and italo-disco music are gay.

Not gay, just misguided musically ;D. An interesting thought, but  I still don't see the point of listening to it in a comfortable setting.

Yeah it really depend of people tastes. Everyone can like and dislike what they want. Personally I can't stand rap and hip hop except for this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTi5SNKpg28). However if someone posted a rap creation here in the music section, on Youtube or any other forums I would not go on and start dissing his work, bashing his states and flame. In fact, I may even try to give suggestions to improve the song if there are any improvement possibilities, to try to make the song more original and different.

I also dislike most ballads and pop music. I generally prefer stuff that goes faster. However there are exceptions, like this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgldGHu0WXA&fmt=18) that played on the radio regulary when I was kid. Also if you look through my favourites on Youtube you will notice that most stuff I listen to isn't american nor canadian

That's just the songs I listened to since Feb 22nd 2010. I have close to 8000 songs in my playlist

Still under 9001, though :(

However, still large enough to take almost 30% of my old computer hard drive x.x

Also keep in mind there are a lot of megamixes in that, too, which are one hour long sometimes. There are some duplicate songs, though. (usually different bitrate)

That means it's even more than I thought. I don't have any megamixes or such that are over an hour long. O_o I wonder how many hours of music that adds up to?

My favorite band is Coldplay, but I also like classic rock (REO Speedwagon, Styx, Journey, etc.)

Yeah it says 25 days now :P

8265 songs. That's almost >9000!!!!!

Lately I've been listening a lot to this 1991 song

The artist Corona did a cover of it, renamed to Baby Baby, in 1995. I didn't knew Corona's version was a cover. Maybe cuz it was actually good, unlike several dance music covers :P (but again, I don't like the new stuff very much)

I don't think we should judge artists songs based on how they are made, unless they are stolen like DJ Rankin. I don't really care how a song is made, personally. It's the result that matters to me. I like the sound they produce, even though it isn't really real guitar all the time but rather multiple recorded segments put together along with keyboard solos. The only thing that I don't like about it is that then their live performance is never really as great as how their songs sounds like.

I think hating a band just because their song is not played with real instruments is worse than hating a song because it was remixed.

I pretty much always listen to video game music or J-rock/J-pop. Recently, I've been listening to:

Cruel Angel's Thesis [2009 Anniversary Remix] - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1DZHCbfWAQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1DZHCbfWAQ)
I Am Godannar! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dsBxrPbyLk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dsBxrPbyLk)
Heart to Heart - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y7N3hy--ck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y7N3hy--ck)

I've also been listening to the Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha (Rebuild of Evangelion 2.22) soundtrack and the Zelda Oracle of Ages OST Remix Essence of Lime

well, you see, i wouldn't mind it if they actually did music that depicted their personal skill level.  Im not saying their novice musicians or anything, but me, as part of a band and from many personal experiences; i hate it when a band edits or alters their music to such an extent that it appears to be amazing, so they get chosen to perform above the other band (aka my band :( lol) even though when they actually perform live, they cant play it nearly as well as the demo recording.. :/

I used to, and i guess i still do, like the music dragonforce makes.  But if they need to edit their music that much, (its like you said DJ, they have multiple recordings, and they speed it up as well), then they lose my vote, just my personal opinion.
i wouldnt mind it if they stopped the god-like guitar solos, and just go for insanely inhuman ones.. :D

@tsukasa.  I like j-pop too.  its always got a like beat and rhythm to it, even though i don't understand what they are saying.. :P that godannar song is pretty cool

Yeah I agree that if the band tries to pass themselves off as a better band than anyone else but in fact edit their songs, it doesn't look too good. Personally I like how their stuff sounds like, though. I like Sonata Artica more, though. But if someone loads Albeton Live and makes a metal song in it and it sounds cool, I'll love it, even if it was not made with real instruments.

To me music is a form of art and expression. We should be free to express this art how we want.

Stratovarius, mainly The Game Never Ends and Eagleheart, though I like Legions as well.

I'm also listening to some of DJ's stuff, like Return from the Forbidden Lands.

I also have the soundtracks for Touhou 6, 7, 7.5, 8, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, and 12, 12.3, 12.5, 12.8 on my iPod and I listen to that too.

Stratovarius, mainly The Game Never Ends
I like that song too, but it makes me lose everytime >:(
DJ-Omnimaga, Techno Strike.
Glad you like it. Actually although it's mostly bass and is repetitive, I think it's one of my favorite in the stuff I made back in 2002. (My favorite being Neo Trance Remix)

I was gonna merge them, but I couldn't figure out how to do so. :/

On topic: I've been listening to loads of Journey lately. The kick so much ass! And... they're coming to town in August, how awesome! :D I've also been listening to a lot of Iron Maiden, Rhapsody of Fire (The Frozen Tears of Angels), Stratovarius, and Nigthwish (Century Child, Once)

I have 501 song on my iPod, that +1 is morbicae's Shoo da whoop (or I'ma Firin Mah Lazor).
The other artists I listen to are, in no particular order other then alphabetically :P
I would have more, but I'm hovering at around 1GB of space on my iTouch so I haven't gone looking for more music :P (I usually stay around that much so I can do app updates and such for the bigger games).
WARNING: these are all harder bands, so only go check them out if you don't mind hard music :)

Ah ok (°-.-)
I don't think AFI's guitarist is that bad. He's not the greatest ever, but I've heard much much worse.
It is not that he is bad, it is just that his guitar has got a sound like a back noise (what ?) and that he doesn't play the guitar like an electric one: with an acoustic guitar, you play with chords (and you do other things to make your chords more beautiful); with an electric one, you can do chords but not only.
He is not bad (I would like to be able to play like him but I don't even own a guitar), it is just that he plays nothing. Proof: I made a 100% in expert in Rockband 2, without looking at the screen.
The bass is quite more interesting to listen to.
I also have seen morse but I won't say. I've been rude enough.

EDIT: I rayed my opinion in my previous post, because everyone has his opinion and it is useless to fight  about it.

Wow, that's a good FC for not looking at the screen... I haven't FCed it yet myself, mainly because I don't play that song a lot. It's on my to-do FC list, along with 200 other songs :P

??? What is FC ?

??? What is FC ?
It means "Full Combo", which is when you hit 100% of the notes without overstrumming.
Title: Re: Watcha Been Listening Too?
Post by: Hayleia on June 14, 2011, 03:59:47 am
Ah ok, thx. Yeah, overstrumming is the only difficulty in this song (even more on FoFiX), on contrary to TTFAF from Dragonforce: here it would be the lack of strumming. I made a 3% with looking at the screen.

I don't mind metal with growling/screaming/etc vocals or extreme speed as long as it doesn't stick to only one or two note pitch/key level for almost the entire song, making the melody absolutely boring. I prefer when it has some epic melodies and preferably some chords as well (either choir pads or something else)

Stuff like this for example:

@DJ_O, that sounds pretty good! I'm just still not too big on power metal ;) If you're into We Came As Romans (if you've never heard of them, they're metalcore with clean singing and they have synths in some of their songs), you might like Erra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1-DyCT4j10&ob=av2e).

I liked Ultra Beatdown too, but probably due to the video game feel it had. I like the new signer but still getting used to the difference. My favorite DF album was Sonic Firestorm I think, then in second place came the original version of Valley of the Damned (I'm probably one of the very few who prefer the non-remastered release to the 2010 re-release and I think it's due to the higher reverb it seemed to have and maybe because I'm used to listening to lower quality sound from '80s or early '90s power metal)

Anyway what I've been listening to recently is the following:

-Ensiferum  (mostly From Afar album. This band is power metal ish but with growling death metal style vocals)
-Almost done with Dragonforce's new album

-Five italo disco songs I recently found
-The Protomen - Light up the Night (probably the only song I like from the band, though)
-Three happy hardcore songs I don't know the artists of, since most old happy hardcore on Youtube lacks the artist name
-The Sound Assasins - Like a Prayer (happy hardcore)
-Cascada - Bad Boy
-Roxette - Fading Like A Flower (one of the very few song I like from that artist)
-Old Yngwie Malmsteem stuff (my favorite song being Rising Force)
-The old TIMGUL Rave mixes

Yea, Ultra beatdown was pretty video game influenced, but I also liked that they slowed it down a bit on some tracks as opposed to being all speed all the time. Yngwie Malmsteems's Oddesy album is pretty good overall, best I've heard of him anyhow. The Trilogy album is pretty good as well, but IIRC the singer isn't as good on that album. Early Yngwie albums are also great because they feature Jens Johanssonon keyboard. Jens Johansson went on to join Stratovarious in 1995 and has been their keyboard player since. :D

Yeah my only gripe about Odyssey is that the sound recording seems kinda different than their 1985 and 88 album and with some headphones, you barely even hear the guitar riffs due to lack of treble and some drum sounds seems to drown out others. I had the same issue with the first Stratovarius album.

I wonder if Yngwie was the first artist to venture into power metal styles? Until I listened to his stuff, I was sure power metal and derivative neo-classical metal stuff started in 1995 or so (since most power metal bands before were more on the heavy/thrash side, especially Blind Guardian)

To be honest, I'M not a big fan of Nightcore, because  all Nightcore does is taking eurodance songs then pitch them up to hardcore speed, with absolutely no other modification, then claim the songs as his own. It's the same thing as DJ Rankin and DJ Cammy, except he at least doesn't add extra out-of-sync eminem vocals on top of speeded up songs. Basically, he pretty much steals music (although in most cases the result sounds kinda cool)

I like Hixxy, Scott Brown (1999-2003 stuff), Dune, Scooter ('90s stuff) and s3rl, though. I'm mostly into late '90s happy hardcore and early 2000's UK hardcore personally.

Also I can't wait for the new Sonata's Arctica album. I wonder when it comes out? Because I've checked stores here and it wasn't yet. (although they hard Dragonforce's new album). Also it sucks that Winterheart's Guild is no longer being sold where I live... (every other album are still easily available on a regular basis)

To be honest, I'M not a big fan of Nightcore, because  all Nightcore does is taking eurodance songs then pitch them up to hardcore speed, with absolutely no other modification, then claim the songs as his own.

"Another Night" definitely comes to mind when I hear people say this, but where did "Dam Dadi Doo" come from? :P

Also, not defending the artist, but if you wanna get technical, a speedcore drum sound and a few new-school synths count as "other modifications".  It could be worse though... Nighcore could pull the same shit every other rap/R&B artist is doing by ripping off 90's songs and giving no respect to the original creator whatsoever (Jason Derillo's "Dont Wanna Go Home" ripping off "Show Me Love" by Robin-S, and the more obvious one that has Eminem in it where the "What Is Love" melody and lyrics are taken right from the song... those are just the tip of the iceberg too unfortunately =/ I could go on but I wont, lol)

I swear I heard Dam Dadi Doo in some eurodance songs before. But yeah I see your point. In the past I did see people remixing songs and not even mention the original artist anywhere. Even here it happened before, although the guy asked my permission to remix the song. Initially he named it Grooving to the Melody but put his name in the artist field. I edited it and changed it to reflect that the original was by me and explained it to him. But normally you only put in your artist name in the title field when you create a cover then mention the original artist in the description or in parentheses and even then some people still mention the original artist in the field then mention theirs after the title, mentionning it's a cover.

Hence why for example in the Omnimaga music player you'll see song names such as "Cirque Du Soleil - Alegria (DJ Omnimaga Happy Hardcore Remix).mp3" instead of "DJ Omnimaga - Alegria (Happy Hardcore Remix)". Of course back in 2007-08 I didn't follow that structure, though, so for example, in TIMGUL rave mixes  track lists there migth be some confusion.

However doing this is kinda hard when your song remixes switches to a different music genre entirely. Eg, if I used Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give you Up (DJ Omnimaga Remix), nobody would know it's now UK hardcore instead of pop/disco, so I went with "Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up (DJ Omnimaga UK Hardcore Remix)" instead, which, however, is very long.

You can always go for "Never Gonna Give You Up (UK Hardcore) - Rick Astley Remixed By DJ Omnimaga".  That's the format I use with all of my remixes.  I picked up that trick from DM Ashura when he was remixing DDR/BMIIDX songs up the whazoo back in the mid 2000's

I guess that can work too. Do you put everything in the title or in the artist field too?

It depends... when it comes to videogame music remixes, I usually slap my name on them with no worries (I.E. "Bloody Tears (Dance The Night Away Remix) - ::CMG (UTOPIA)::"), mostly cause the song choices i pick are from popular video games that everyone as played before (albeit OBSCURE and sometimes BAD videogames, but still, lol), so its automatically known that I'm crediting the videogame that it came from, and I wouldn't claim it as an "original creation" to begin with.  However, with actual mainstream media music (I.E. songs from the radio, movies, ect...), thats when I mention the original artist followed by my name as the remixer (I.E. "Dirty Talk (H-Core Clip-Clap Remix) - Wynter Gordan Remixed By ::CMG (UTOPIA)::") just as an insurance policy.

Although, there are other artists that are a little more brave than that.  Going back to the DDR/BMIIDX series, take songs like "My Fire" and "Wonderland" by X-Treme for instance.  They aren't doing anything different to the original songs they came from, yet at the same time the remakes themselves are unique enough that they can get away with it (hence why people call them "covers" i suppose), since everyone and their grandmother knows that both those songs were originally made in the 70's disco era.  The "Dancemania" series (which has over 50+ albums in Japan) is filled with stuff like this.  But both the albums, and DDR/BMIIDX games give credits in the credits section (even in the instruction booklet of the games) just for good measure.

So really I guess it just depends on the situation

Usually covers are different versions of the originals that don't contain a single sound sample from the original artist work, while remixes contains them.

Talking about Dancemania, I used to have most of it on my computer in 2007, but then it crashed and recently I tried to find Dancemania Classic Speed again, to no avail. It seems those are rare nowadays D:

Listening to the new Sonata Arctica album now, which finally came out here this weekend. It's kinda good although it doesn't come close to matching Silence, Winterheart's Guild and Ecliptica in quality.

However, something caught my attention, when listening to the lyrics in the song called "The Day"

Quote
My friend...
We'll win the fight together, we'll lose the game together
Greet the heroes all together, and forever, we'll remember

O.O

Not my music?? O.O

j/k. Also since I am not too familiar with the entire rock scene (I am more into fast melodic metal genres), is Rise Against the same as Rise Against the Machine, but under a new name? Also when I saw Imagine Dragons I immediately went to check in case it was a new power metal band (when a band, album or song title has the word "dragon" in it, 99% of the time it's power/folk/symphonic metal :P)

As for myself I have been listening to Wintersun, Dissection, Ensiferum, Iron Maiden, some Metallica and I recently returned in my old happy hardcore compilations from Bonkers series. I also of course still occasionally listen to my usual power metal bands and some '90s eurodance/'80s italo-disco stuff

I do the opposite lol. I'm not as much of a fan of charts music except a few songs (eg Lady Gaga Just Dance) for some reasons, but it might be a bit inflated by how commercial music influence makes it incredibly hard, if not impossible, for artists with a different style  to emerge or get signed to a label that fits his genre/style.

Do you mean classic? I don't listen to old classical music much, but some is nice sometimes (I'm more into modern classical stuff like Yanni). Otherwise I tend to be more into stuff that sounds like video game music, but I am more into 16-bit-ish stuff than 8 bit and GXSCC.

Wow. Just wow.

For those who aren't sure what that is, it's essentially a port of one of the most complex songs from Chrono Trigger (A SNES game) to NES hardware. The amazing part is, I don't think I can tell the difference without listening to the two at the same time.
Title: Re: Watcha Been Listening To?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 20, 2012, 03:37:31 am
That can run on a NES?? O.O (although I did see what Journey to Silius could do in terms of music and was quite impressed already)

By the way, for those who hate trackers or softwares like Finale and prefer FL Studio/Music 2000 interfaces with grid-based note pasting for loops, but still want to make 8 bit music, there is Pocket Music for the Game Boy Color, which can do a quite decent job. It's made by the same company that made Music 2000/MTV Music Generator series and works pretty similarly.

There is also a GBA version, but it uses real samples rather than chiptunes-like sounds, and they are so compressed that they totally sound horrible (especially kickdrums). Even 11 KHz samples in Music 2000 sounds better M2000 offers 11, 22 and 44)

Of course I recommend that you get the games legally, though. :P (I actually never could find the GBC version on Ebay, tho)

I just found another cool power metal band called Sabaton. Well... I don't know if it's power metal, but the album I ran into definitively is.

Never heard of them until I watched a video of band concert fails and one of their concert mishap happened to be included (along with many Slipknot and Marilyn Manson ones :P). They kinda reminds me of some folk/viking metal bands, but with clean vocals and a bit of Nightwish musical style too.

There's also Graveworm that I listen to to a certain extent since I found them from an Iron Maiden cover of Fear of the Dark. It's more melodic black metal, though, so maybe not everyone would like :P (I don't mind that kind of vocals as long as the music is melodic. Eg I wouldn't listen to Slipknot or Cannibal Corpse or the like lol)

Also I hate how almost every band I listen to lately have none of their stuff available in retail stores so if I want their album it's either online purchase or listening on Youtube/illegally <_<

I recently bought a 1995 Eurodance compilation, a Daze - Superhero single and a Titan A.E. soundtrack CDs at the junk shop near my home. They sadly no longer have any video game nor electronics, but they have a lot of CDs. The Eurodance compilation isn't that great nor anything close to eurodance except 2 or 3 songs, but the CDs were $2.50 each so it was kinda worth it (not to mention you don't run into such old CDs everyday in stores). I also listen to some SNES music and more Sabaton lately.

Rhapsody is quite cool. My favorite albums are the ones from 1997 to 2002 and the last two. Not much of a fan of SotELp2:TdS and Trihump of Agony because they're too slow. They kinda went back to their original style afterward, though.

As for myself, I've been listening to some new italo disco and older eurobeat, although I tend to get bored fast from that stuff since most songs sound similar. Italo disco is actually in some ways the ancestor of eurobeat (in fact, most '90s eurobeat artists who were popular in Japan were european italo disco artists)

This is an example of italo-disco from 1990, when songs slowly started to sound more like para para stuff:

He's the one who made the song Running in the '90s.

I absolutely can't stand the 1980-83 italo disco, though, and even less American disco.

The first two bands are because I went to a Bad Religion concert Friday night and it was awesome, so it kinda puts me in the mood to listen to some punk. I didn't pay attention to them much before, but I like older stuff from The Offspring and other punk rock of that style and especially Bad Religion stuff. As for Pixeltune it's chiptune stuff that sounds like electro made with a C64 or something.

The Offspring is great. :D I've been listening to them for quite a while. I haven't heard of Pixeltune, so I'll check em out. Bad religion I've heard of but never listened to before, can you recommend any songs?

For me recently I've been listening to:

Iron Maiden Discography
Black Sabbath, the Dio Years. (Ronnie James Dio is an incredible singer :D)
Lukhash, Lukhash, and more Lukhash.
Five Finger Death punch - Way of the fist.
Bullet for my Valentine (First 3 albums).

By the way, those who like punk rock but also like medieval stuff might also like celtic and irish punk. I just went to Dropkick Murphys and Irish Moutarde concerts and it was absolutely epic. The first band is from Boston and it was celtic punk but my favorite was the 2nd one, which does irish punk. I don't like both as much as punk rock but it still sometimes is very close, while having extra instruments from irish or celtic styles.

I'd also recommend Ayreon in that list too, since he* often blends folk with both prog and rock/metal (but never all three af once, I've noticed).

I keep hearing a band that sounds like irish/punk when I'm in Spencers at the mall. I wonder if it's one of these guys? ??? They do sound pretty awesome whoever they are. :D

It's possible. There might be many of those bands, though, depending of how popular the genre is outside Quebec. Quebec and Atlantic Canada have a lot of Irish roots but I am sure there are many of those people in United States as well.

Some of my all time favorite music

Wow... just... wow

Skip to about 1:07 to skip the bad part  <_<

Simple!

I don't know why this I like this song so much ???

You may have heard this song remixed before...  But this is how it is meant to be remixed... not that dubstep garbage...

Gets really epic at 38 seconds

Pogo is an interesting genre!  This is one of my favorite.

I have not included a melodysheep song yet... one of my favorites from *him/her?*

Its a meme by now.  Look it up  ::)

Lindsey Stirling.  Violin never sounded so good :D

And the last one for now...  Eargasmic music (imo :D)

Yeah it's one of my favorite songs from him.

Also, if you haven't already you should check his first two albums as well, particularly the 2nd one (From Alpha to Omega being the 1st and Unsung Legends being the 2nd one). The first is a little weird at times (especially the song called The Sage who Became a Star XD) since there's no guitar in some songs, but it's still fun to listen to (especially the song Guardian of Memories and his self-titled song Albion from 2003). They are not on Bandcamp, though, they're at http://www.furaffinity.net/user/davidn/

I also discovered that Albion is an ancient name for Britain.
Since  Albion is Greek and means something like "white" (also think of albino people)  the name is thought to originate from the white cliffs of dover.

Just wanted to share that.

Yes I think it comes from French people because you can actually see said cliffs over the sea from France. My English teacher once told me that we used to call Britain "La perfis de Albion". It's actually negative towards English people.

This one is a huge mess. I usually listen to it when I want to be isolated from the world for 10 minutes (like when my parents are eating).

Those ones seem like huge mess if you don't know anything to music, but they are completely organized (especially compared to the previous one). I usually listen to those when I need to stay motivated (they don't help me focus at all but they keep me working sometimes).

This one is when I need to turn motivation on.

This one has no particular reason, I just like it :P
I don't know why the uploader only put one loop turn for that music even though all other Melee music he uploaded got two loop turns though. Maybe he thought he put two loop turns because of the two parts that look alot alike but they are two different parts.

This one is when I lost all motivation and need to focus on something I like. I really love the random variations played by the drums and the bass. Such as the drummer at the end, like "Everyone is playing 4 times the same thing ? NOPE, I'll change my routine after 2 passes. What, now you want to play 8 times the same thing ? Well I'll change my routine after 4 passes" :P

I've been getting into some EDM groups recently. Nearly went to see the Glitch Mob concert in LA last month but ended up being busy that day :/ We Can Make The World Stop is probably still my favorite track.

Feed Me also has some interesting stuff. I loved the ending to Little Cat Steps.

And this might sound like generic EDM to some people (bass drop, bass drop, breakdown, bass drop) but Nero's new song is still pretty awesome.

I usually don't like Royksopp much, but loved Royksopp Forever.

Other artists: Tut Tut Child, Knife Party, Celldweller, Infected Mushroom, Hans Zimmer, DragonForce, Helloween, Escala, The Prodigy, Coldplay.

I'm currently listening to older songs by Sonata Arctica (from back when they were still called Tricky Means then Tricky Beans). I made some interesting discoveries, such as these two songs:

The first song sounds a lot like Flag in the Ground but more in punk rock style with extra flute/piano on top of it. The second one seems like an early version of Sign in Silence. A lot of their old faster songs from 1996-98 sounds like punk rock too and some are not as good, but most are nice. One of their old ballads that was eventually remade in their first albums sounds like 70's stuff too.

I think the stuff above dates back in 1996-98.

Nope, I listen to it on Spotify. Is it possible that you add AKoO and Unfinished there please ?

-Tales of the Knight of the Moon: USD$14.95
-A Decade of Magic Hardcore: USD$224.96
-A Decade of Omni Dance: USD$36.27

Those are the sales and streaming revenues for the period ranging from June 2013 to May 2014 that I have gotten from each of my distributed albums on iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, Zune and over 20 other stores. It costs $34.95 per album per year to keep them online. Given that my first metal album can't even get close to cover those costs, I doubt I'll put a second metal album on Spotify/iTunes/etc, let alone a single.

That said, since the happy hardcore album offsets any loss I get from other albums and that I also get other money from the free Bandcamp service, I guess I might be fine, but that's still over 10% of my sales that would go away in covering AKoO's distributing costs. Here are my June 2013-May 2014 sales on Bandcamp btw in Canadian dollars:

-TotKotM: CAD$9.90
-AKoO: CAD$55.44
-Unfinished: CAD$5.00
-A Decade of Magic Hardcore: CAD$15.92
-A Decade of Omni Dance: CAD$16.02

Basically, even with Bandcamp included, TotKotM isn't even making the cut. AKoO only sold so much because it just came out last Winter. Now it isn't selling so much anymore (the last Bandcamp copy sold was in March), but it has the highest listen rate overall.

All profits used to go to Omnimaga contest/hosting donations until about a year ago back when Omni hosting costed $85 per month, but nowadays it mainly covers a few metal concert ticket and video game purchases.
If AKoO ever makes it to iTunes, it will be combined with Unfinished and another single.

I don't really care about anything else than bandcamp and spotify. :P I understand though.

Yeah actually the issue is that while Bandcamp is free and only take 15% of the sales, everything from music distributors is bundled together and isn't free, so you really have to think more than twice before submitting an album. If it sells really poorly and you want to remove it there are fees. Here's the list of stores and streaming services it gets submitted to:

7 Digital, Amazon MP3, Aspiro, Deezer, eMusic, Google Play, Guvera, iLike, iTunes, La Curacao, Last.fm, Medianet, MOG, Myspace Music, Myxer, Napster, Nielsen Soundscan, Pasito Tunes, playlist.com, Rhapsody, Simfy, Slacker, Spotify, Synacor, Thumbplay OTA, Virgin Mega and Zune (Musiwave)

Also you don't get any control on submitted stuff, so if you made a mistake or want to add bonus tracks you can't. Also most of those stores takes a revenue share that is larger than on Bandcamp (although since my albums are more expensive there it offsets that). Also, another sucky part is that only two of those services are available in Canada (iTunes and Google Play).

My favorite German artists are Blumchen Jasmin (especially the songs SOS and Odyssey in 3D), Mark Oh (the 1995 version of "Tears don't lie" in particular), Dune, Dschinghis Khan and probably a few of the other happy hardcore/eurodance artists I might have forgotten that they are German. I also like Rammstein.

Yeah at first I thought it was a Russian song because of the weird name and the song name but then I realized after listening carefully to the lyrics that this sounded like German. I never usually listen to traditional disco music, but this song, along with Born to be Alive, are two exceptions. Otherwise the only disco I listen to is italo disco (the ancestor of Eurobeat).

This sounds kinda like some of the late 90's and early 2000's commercial ballads in United States/Canada that were overplayed on radio, but this song in particular kinda sounds nice so I'm ok with it :)

Stuff that plays like 6 times per day on popular radio stations and that sounds like everything else (in this case, most 1999-2003 pop music). It can be excellent or horrible music, but you hear it so often you eventually get tired of it.

Yeah same, except finnish/swedish/german power metal bands, especially now that some of them went back to their roots, like Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius.

Also indie musicians are fine too especially those that experiment with old music genres.

Unfortunately, main radios rarely play such music.

Title: Re: Watcha Been Listening To?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 09, 2014, 11:11:41 pm
Oh wow, Alestorm is awesome. If you like fast stuff you'll like the first three Metallica albums and the last one the best. They switched to a different style in 1991 although the 1991 album is excellent too.

You might want to check out Iron Maiden and Amon Amarth too and if you like more medieval, melodic and symphonic stuff you might like Stratovarius, Dragonforce, Sonata Arctica and Sabaton too. As for black and death metal, I'm not too familiar with it but I listen to dissection and Aeternam sometimes.

As of myself, I just went to two Irish Moutarde concerts. Both concerts were identical but awesome (the first was at 12 PM and the second one, where they were replacing another band, was at 7:30 PM). My favorite song from them is A Lad and a Hag. They also do plenty of Dropkick Murphys covers. This is a Dropkick Murphys song I listen a lot right now btw:

This version is a little different but awesome as well:

Eurodance version

Melodic black metal version

Of course nothing beats the original, though:

EDIT: Also the new Dragonforce Maximum Overload album which has a song called The Game. Awesome album btw. At least it doesn't consist entirely of ballads like The Power Within album. Maximum Overload reminds me a bit of Ultra Beatdown with the occasional 8-bit sounds.

Erm, I see a rapidshare link. If it contains copyrighted material I would recommend removing it since it's against the rules. Youtube is fine because you can't download the song via regular means. It's also more convenient since you can embed it directly in your post.

Warning: contains major strobe effects :P

Yeah, I am playing on chill out mode because there's no way I can survive 26 minutes without any means of defense :P Also I tried really hard to get a 500x score modifier but I don't think I succeeded :\

It's a remake of their 1999 album Ecliptica. This video misses the Kingdom of a Heart remake, but you are not missing much because that song in particular is horribly mastered/eq'ed it seems. The rest has some minor quirks and for the most part can't beat the original, but they're still better than I thought they would be. :D My favorites are UnOpened and Blank File (actually I prefer Blank File with that lower pitch although I obviously prefer the 1999 instruments)

So yeah, songs I listen to a lot lately:

This OST track has a nice Mr.Vain/Rhythm is a Dancer vibe to it.

WARNING: Do not search for videos of that AVGN Adventure stage if you're under 18! It contains adult content, since the stage pokes fun at those nasty Atari 2600 games.

Also a band from Quebec I discovered. I would like to maybe go see them thursday night with Vilain Pingouin, but I guess it will depend of money:

Also it's a shame that this song is only on the Japanese version of the Ecliptica Revisited album from SOnata Arctica. It's one of the best song on the album IMHO and it's a remake of their 1998 demo song (back when they were still called Tricky Beans):
