Building a giant rugged laptop. Specs: Celeron D cpu, 2GB ram, Dual boot WinXP Xubuntu on 200GB hdd
Most importantly: full keyboard.
I intend to use this thing outdoors.

Image is clicky

How much does it weigh? O.O
-
About 13KG and still increasing...
-
Haha, that's pretty sweet! :D
-
Whoaaaaa O_O
The '80s for the win! And, I think it looks sweet, but then I have a mullet.
-
Yep I was going for an old-school look. I think the keyboard looks great on it. The yellowed spacebar matches the color of the suitcase and the screen just fits perfectly. I know that LCD's weren't around yet, but I think I could not fit a crt in it.
-
That sounds pretty awesome.
-
I wish to add speakers and a floppy drive to this thing next. I am not sure where I want to put them yet though
-
inb4 you need a car to get this thing around... haha
-
I might put wheels on it and a tiny engine
-
Would you try taking it on an airplane? :P
-
I think I'd have to get a second ticket for this beast T_T
-
Nice.
Does it have a battery? If so, how long does it last?
-
Nope. It has a PC power supply in it. I might be able to make some kind of custom supply so it can work on batteries, but I don't think it'd be worth it. The battery would not last very long because the screen, motherboard and harddisk are not low-power laptop parts.
-
That link on the image O.O

Then TSA thinks it's illegal :P
-
Looks weird and non-portable but still cool nonetheless. My main complain about laptops was that the screen was usually too small since I prefer 20+ inch screens but then I know it wouldn't be a laptop anymore. :P
-
This screen is 4:3 && 19 inch. Definitely much larger than most laptops :3
-
That's pretty neat Keoni. I definetly think some sort of portable power supply would be a nice addition if you can manage it.
-
There is now a power strip inside the laptop O.O You just need one power cable to run the whole thing. I might get rid of this power strip and solder the power directly into the screen and PSU, but for now it works.
-
On an airplain you are allowed a carry-on, a backpack and a laptop, right?
-
But TSA might think it's a dangerous thing :P
and would you drain an airplane of power with that plugged in for a long time?

Carry-on would be this, unless you add straps

All of the parts are fcc approved, so it is legal to bring it with me. I think they would dismantle it to search for drugs and weapons though x.x
-
Indeed. The issue is mostly if they think it's a bomb
-
Will it have overheating issues like that? O_o
-

That's what I was thinking from the start :P
Just didn't dare to phrase it for unknown reasons.
Wouldn't overcharging (does it have a battery?) blow up the battery?

He already said that it doesn't have a battery.
But that works pretty well on a normal laptop. Yes, even inside an airplane.

It has no explosive parts except for capacitors maybe, but you can hold one against your skin and when it explodes you'd be fine (You'd just smell really bad)
I added a diskette drive on the side yesterday. It is stacked on top of the harddisk and fits under the keyboard. When I get rid of the power strip there will be some more space to add things. I could add a battery for powering things like lights, my usb fan, a small 5 watt dremel tool or for charging my phone, but the pc won't run off it.

...Experience? O.O
-
I had a capacitor explode very close to my face once. Luckily I was not hit, but the whole room smelled funny afterwards. This capacitor was quite a bit beefier than the ones you have on a motherboard.
-
O.O
In china there are the type of small firecracker things that explode when they hit a hard surface. I had a pack of them explode in my hands, near my face
-
Pop-its?
-
I wouldn't want to use any explosives coming from China. :P (you know how cheap Made in China stuff can be)

HEEYYYYYYyyyyyyyyyy
Those small firecrackers are safe and won't harm ya.
-
Unless they blow up in your face:P
After I was done with my cousin playing with them, our roof was almost solid black.
(Besides, I was 10)
