Title: Favorite distro or windows version?
Post by: Snake X on October 14, 2014, 08:37:20 pm
This is a rather tough one for me. It varies throughout the year but I tend to switch distro's time to time as well as the desktop environments on them. Recently I've been using the cinnamon DE on manjaro linux (a fork of arch linux with a GUI). I used linux mint on my laptop for a while, But I'm also interested in what you all use too.

What's your preferred flavoring of linux?
Or, if you use windows, favorite windows version?
I've tried windows 10 and it seems to be fairly decent but wont boot off an external and takes 10 minutes normally  ???

I also dual boot manjaro and windows 7 through grub, and have each on a raid 1 and windows 10 on a single drive.

It's hard to say, because after a few years, older Windows OSes become obsolete (either programs dropping support for the OS or Microsoft stopping maintaining it) and I personally never used Linux yet, but among Windows versions, I used Windows 3.1, 95, NT 4.0, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8. Windows 7 is my favorite among them, but I might eventually give Windows 10 a try.

If windows 10 can polish itself well enough I'll probably be making a switch from windows 7. I just dont like how it sync's even the keyboard layout, I have DIP switches on mine to make it dvorak on a hardware level so my laptop would be on the software level. If it were both on my PC, it would be like swapping all the keys twice  D:

What I like about 10 is that the start menu seems back. The lack of a classic start menu is why I did not switch to Windows 8.

That and it seems to crash a bit more and is less free on the settings it. I had to do some research on how to make a system backup on 8.1. What's worst is the UEFI on laptops. It's bad you're not able to restore windows without enabling that and switching the settings on it time to time when doing some repairs.

However it's fun on a touch enabled laptop.

My Linux distro of choice is Arch Linux with AwesomeWM (I'll take my system very lightweight and with a good level of personalization thanks), or else I like OS X's interface and the fact it's pretty much the only desktop UNIX most commercial software such as the Adobe CC suite supports. And yeah, I agree Windows 10 looks pretty good so far, I'll be the first to install it on my Surface Pro once it comes out.

So yeah, I tend to not use Windows unless necessary (unless it's my Surface which I didn't installed anything else on it for various reasons), although I can poke at it in my Win 10 and 98 VMs.

Debian for server, Mac OS X for desktop/laptop :P
If I have to choose a Windows, then 7 is still better for a desktop, for me.

This is easy for me. Windows 7 all the way. Although, before 7 came out XP was my OS of choice.

Well, when only looking at the OS's stability and features, I like Linux a lot more than Windows. The distribution I'm currently running is Ubuntu, but I've never tried an other distro.

But when choosing an OS for my computer, I think I'd choose Windows 7, because it a stable windows version that is still supported by pretty much all software. I know Windows 8 is newer, but I've experienced it to be unstable and it's support for older programs is a lot worse than that of Windows 7. The reason I personally won't choose for Linux (if I had a choice) is that while more and more software is made to be cross-platform, the vast majority is still only made for Windows.

Hm, let's see what i use.....
Archlinux (Desktop)
Raspbian (Raspberry Pi)
Bananian (Banana Pi)
Debian (VPS)

For a desktop I prefer Archlinux, I use XFCE4 currently (and since more than a year now)

Windows 8 all the way. I really like the interface and I'm not even running it on touch. It's not that resource intensive either.

I dislike Linux for a few reasons and try to steer clear of it, the main reason being drivers. If I had to use it though (and I do occasionally) then it would be Arch or Mint and XFCE4. Cinnamon's nice but I get too bored of it.

I prefer Arch, personally, but wouldn't recommend it for most non-tech-savvy users. A nice debian stable installation works well there. I put one on my parents' computer 6 years ago and it's still running strong with no real maintenance.

Something I fear with newer Windows versions is that eventually support for 32-bit softwares might be phased out the same way 16-bit ones did and there are many good 32-bit softwares out there that are still useful.

I agree with the last few posts here. For me there's some sort of holy trinity of Linux distros: Arch for the tech-savvy, Linux Mint for the newbies and Debian for servers. And yeah, Microsoft made a big move toward touch devices with Windows 8, it's pretty cool if you have one, but if you don't, the Start Menu that came with it and all the touch features might feel weird.

For netbooks, mine was sold with Windows 7. Which I think was totally not made for that. Your netbook will be delighted if you install a Linux.

For 32-bit support, I think it will be around as long 64-bit will live. 16-bit support was dropped on 64-bit CPUs, but it's still there on 32-bit CPUs, so I think 32-bit support will be dropped with 128-bit CPUs if they ever come out.

What about Ububtu? I remember back in the days it seemed like the distro of choice for newbies according to many people I talked to then, but eventually something happened that caused people to hate it.

Not counting obseleteness, I especially appreciate Windows 3.1, 2000 Professional, XP, and 7.  3.1 on anything 80208 to 486, 2000 on Pentium to Pentium III, XP on Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon, and 7 on anything else newer than Pentium 4. I think 10 has great hope though. Vista I really liked but paled compared to 7, same for 98 to 2K Pro and 8 to 10.

Linux I'm still avoiding so far, but I did enjoy a little stint with Archlinux on my netbook, more so than Ubuntu for example. It was ridiculously lightweight; if I had a less powerful netbook I'd definitely give it a fair try, but as it stands it runs Windows 7 Pro with ease.

I still see Ubuntu around a fair bit. It doesn't show up here much because almost everyone's advanced to where it's more of an encumbrance than a boost.

I stopped using Ubuntu around 2011, around when GNOME 3 released (which everyone hated) and Ubuntu intended to replace it with Unity (which everyone also hated even more for some reason). Ubuntu was also beginning to go more commercial, all of those things caused the downfall of Ubuntu. Linux Mint, an Ubuntu fork, went with a GNOME 2 fork, along with another desktop environment that isn't GNOME or KDE or something. Which is nice, I guess.

Ubuntu is still one of the giants, it's still popular, but it's no longer The Thing(tm) as other distros rose to be equally popular.
