I am trying to figure out what linux distros I like best so I wan to know whats most popular so I can try them out. I also think it would be good to see what the popular distrobutions in a community like this are. I know ubuntu and mint are nearly the same thing(imo mint is better)
I voted linux mint because so far thats all I've used
-
I voted ubuntu for a few reasons
1. it's the most popular
2. it's the only one i've used
3. it's one of the most userfriendly
4. lots of support (because it's the most popular)
I heard linux mint is very user-friendly too
2nd most popular is fedora, 3rd openSUSE
-
Actually according to distrowatch:
1st Ubuntu
2nd Mint
3rd Debian
4th Fedora
5th OpenSuse
Linux mint is friendly an d has a good support IRC channel
-
meh i dunno. probably the ones i quote were from a few years ago, u might be right.
-
thats by Page views though. It might be different based on downloads
-
I shall have to check tomorrow for the most popular because i'd better go to sleep now. Bye!
-
For me:
1: Fedora
2: Gentoo
3: Puppy
-
Mint is what I use and it's my favourite, never forget it's just like Ubuntu.
-
Fedora for me!
Here's why:
-I found it very easy to pick up without ever using Linux before: it has useful GUI tools to do simple tasks but doesn't limit your ability to do anything using a terminal.
-I like it's package management system (yum, specificially, built on top of rpm) to be much easier to use and much more powerful than apt-get, which I have actually used (on Knoppix, which is a mobile version of Debian). That's just my opinion, obviously.
-
Arch all the way for me. If you're enough advanced in the usage of one of the more friendly distros (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora) and you want some challenge, Arch Linux is for you. When installing it, you start with the bare minimum, then you only have to add the packages you want, resulting in a distro tweaked and customized as you wish. Also, Arch is a rolling release, meaning you always have the most recent packages when they get released, you don't have to wait for, say, Ubuntu's next release to get a package's next version. And the package manager, conveniently named Pacman, is simple but powerful to use and you have access to an user-contributed repository, AUR, though a 3rd-party wrapper to Pacman.
tl;dr it's the best if you know Linux and you want a distro between Ubuntu and Gentoo.

I heard that recent versions of Ubuntu weren't as great. I wonder if it's true and if so, then why?
-
Its probably the last version of Ubuntu that people don't like. Ubuntu 11.04 switched to another shell, which makes that the look is totally different, and many people don't like this. Also, the new shell isn't fully finished, and lacks some features that were in the old one. However, many people tend to forget that you can very easily switch back to the old shell, with just 2 clicks when logging in.

I heard it also had a whole lot of bugs. Good thing Mint 11 is coming out soon. supposed to be out before June I was told
-
Supposed to be released by the end of this Month (somewhen during the next week).
And yes Ubuntu 11 is quite buggy.
EDIT: IT WSA JUST RELEASED!
-
I can't even get ubuntu 11 to boot from the CD, actually.

I might not want to try putting it on one of my CDs yet then I guess.

Zenwalk!! (http://zenwalk.org/)
Lighweight distro for development and media.

Lighweight distro for development and media.
Just checked it out, but in the virtual machine I saw (in Youtube) it didn't look so lightweight, it actually took a while to load.
-
It runs pretty well on a P3 with less than half a GB of ram. Definitely faster than ubuntu. Plus it has all the restricted codecs installed and a working g++. I could not for the life of me get g++ to work on any version of ubuntu.
-
I had g++ working on mint 10 before I broke my install
-
How do you get a linux ISO?
-
download it from the website then you burn the image to a CD/FlashDrive
-
which website is this?
also, how do you load it from a CD? :w00t:
-
What distro do you want. Look at the list above and comments for names. You might want to research before deciding. If you go to ditrowatch select one of the top ten(If you don't like any of those you might want to ask) click on it and there should be a download link. Download it then you need software like imgburn. Click burn image select your CD make sure it has enough space then sit back and feel like a god.
To load from disk you need to get to the boot menu and select boot from CD
-
But to load from a flash drive, you just need that program you told me about on OmnimagaOS, right?
-
Get Unetbootin: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/. There are guides on how to use it there.
-
Ok. Thank you very much, ruler501!
-
Your welcome I love to corrupt I mean help new linux users
-
you need an 'Android' option.
-
lol Netham thats what you have android emulator for. I liek the android emulator its not too big
EDIT:what do you mean I was missing the android option it is the :woot: one
-
Tinycore :w00t:
EDIT: Changed ":woot:" in poll to ":w00t:" to display the icon :P
-
LMDE All the way! :P Does that count as mint or debian? I voted mint.
-
Tinycore :w00t:
You can see how much stuff was burnt to a CD if you look on the back of it. The burnt area is a yellowish/discolored area. I looked at one of my Tinycore CDs and I could barely see the burnt area. 700 MB CD WITH 10 MB OS ON IT FTW
Also you need to put EnvisionDev OS up there. :D It's my OS.
EDIT: Here is the logo for you all to see.

Slackware.
A bitch to set up, but you will feel like a god once you do set it up. Sadly it only comes in KDE and I broke my install trying to install Gnome....
-
Ive really been digging Mint lately. The LXDE version fits on a regular CD and runs alright on a P3 with 374 MB ram. Not to mention it has a really nice UI and loads of cool wallpapers included ;D
-
Backtrack FTW :P
I've mainly use Ubuntu but I want to switch to Arch Linux. I just need to get it set up once I actually have my own computer. :D
-
I just installed Mint 11 (updated from Mint 10) and there are not many differences, I'm waiting for stuff like Dinamic Panel Items Customization and more Customization (stuff like the new overlay scrollbars made simple).
Nevertheless, it still has a few good updates and I like it ;)
-
Blah, I just realized Unity won't let my customize my panels :(

Unity has a few issues, but ask Jim Bauwens for some tips on how to tweak it to perfection :)
-
Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 FTW
-
Well, yesterday I convinced my friend to try different forms of linux in his old computer, and from what I can tell, Mint and Ubuntu are lame, Fedora is a bit weirs, Debian is awesome, and forget Arch.
-
I'm sticking with Ubuntu - it's the most user-friendly.
-
There should be an "other" option in the poll :D
-
Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 FTW
Yes, it really is awesome, isn't it? Except that Unity doesn't let me customize my panels >:(
-
Ubuntu 11.04 FTW with (finally) some Nvidia Optimus drivers.
-
And two-finger scrolling finally works :w00t: And the Launcher looks even more awesome than before :w00t: Glad I upgraded.
And I learned something else: Uninstall ubiquity as soon as you boot, and future boots'll be literally minutes faster.

That's rather harsh
-
Well, I found Ubuntu and Mint to be rather fruitless and Vista to be a lot better. However, Fedora was nice but for some reason it crashed while we tested it (so much for being pretty stable...), and Debian was awesome. We couldn't get Arch to work, so I can't even judge it :P
-
Best distro ever :P

My friend's dad works at MS, they have Win8 prototypes.
-
I know. But i love pointing out this :P

Fedora is kinda crashy from what I've heard and Arch is just plain awesome when you get it to work :P but that requires a little know how.
Why are Ubuntu/Mint fruitless for you? Is it cause they don't look nice enough? ( I'm thinking that you also haven't really played around with all the customizations you can make to make it completely yours. I'm also thinking that you are judging based on how it looks which has little to do with the actual core stuff behind it. They all use a DE, which is completely different from the distro itself ( although Ubuntu has one made specifically made for it )
-
Well, it just doesn't seem to work in the same way I modded Vista to work with me. Debian fits everything I want out of an operating system more than anything I have ever seen. Plus, it's considered the most stable major OS, and is rock solid based on being free. I love it :3
