Favorite OS's
« on: May 17, 2011, 06:44:48 pm »
I was interested to see what OS's people think are best. That way I can choose the best for my laptop/desktop

I chose ubuntu(actually for the linux mint) becasue I've only used Windows XP/7 and Linux mint 10. I also chose XP as my favorite one becasue It worked well except for the viruses and the other problems... It was the best windows one I've seen

Yes Haiku is a real OS it is not just in xkcd. http://haiku-os.org
Tell me if I forgot any. I don't know any of the BSD ones names so I just put BSD

In all the ones I tried, there was Windows 3.1, 95, 98 (original), NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, Mac OS 9.1, 9.2 and X. My favorite in them is Windows 7. I did not mind XP much either, but it was less stable it seems. 2000 was OK to me, and crashed less than XP, but the problem is that when it crashed, it was fatal. As for Mac, I like the user-friendliness, but I'm not a big fan of them. I have never tried Linux.

I wonder how would be a Windows version compared to Vista if it was 2.71MP compared to 2.55MP O.O

Windows NT 6.66
(note: Windows 7 uses kernel NT 6.1)

Also I used DOS, Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000/ME, XP, Vista, 7 and Server 2003, Ubuntu (and derivatives) (first Linux distro I installed on my computer), Arch Linux, some other distros such as Mandriva and peeked a little at Mac OS (both Classic and X) (We had Macs).

Vista++

If you use it enough, you can cut all the crap that it has down, and what's left is a OS that has the outward beauty of 7 and the inward beauty of XP with the speed of Linux-based OSs.

I'm a 2+ year Vista-only user with thousands of hours on my Vista comp.  It's a beautiful OS in general.

Linux on the other hand... ;D

Ashbad could you post a complete tutorial on how to get Vista to take as less memory as 7 and as less resources? My bro got it pre-installed on his computer when  he got it and it took as much RAM as on mine. I don't know about other resource usage, though.

That said I don't mind VIsta much otherwise, as it's kinda similar to 7, in terms of usage.

Also I doubt Linux is all bad. The only issue might be user-friendliness for less tech-savy people.

Linux is a good OS you just have to be comfortable with the terminal for most distros and willing to work to find some things.  It works better for programming and personalization imho

Didn't Mint almost required no use of the terminal, though? I heard it was much more user-friendly for people who are very used to Windows.

Linux mint and Ubuntu are among the most user-friendly distros.
Ubuntu is the most popular followed by fedora and opensuse

i've used ubuntu 11.04. Quite nice.

Mint is very close to windows. You don't have to use the terminal much, but on most distros you do.

I actually use the terminal a good amount because of the android programming I'm trying to do. It is very useful, but not as needed.

The bloated useless manufacturer programs that comes with the PC. Something like that.
