Got A New Computer / Selling My Old Computer
« on: June 02, 2012, 02:39:59 pm »
This pretty much explains why i haven't been on here in a few days.

I knew the time would come eventually that I needed to upgrade.  And the last exclamation point was when i tried modding my sidekick4G (for the 2nd time), only to have it almost brick on me forever because my USB ports kept malfunctioning.  Ordered it online last week, it camde in the mail a few days ago, and I must say, I'm very happy with my decision.  I got a Dell Inspiron 620, which was the second cheapest computer Dell had (wasn't looking to spend over $500 for a new computer that had alot of crap i didn't need). But I think the specs are pretty good for what I need :P

Intel Pentium Processor CPU G630 @ 2.70 GHz
4GB Ram
1TB Hard Drive space
DVD-RW Discdrive
Intel HD Graphics
Conexant HD Audio

it also came with a keyboard and a mouse, all for $370, free shipping. :D So far it runs more smoothly (specially with newer youtube/blip videos), and works like a charm as far as speed and programs running correctly goes.  Unfortunately, I am still a Windows 7 N00B (since I've been using XP since 2004), but the advantage now is that I get to fool around with it to see what actually makes it tick and how to make it run the way i want it to.

As for my old computer, I've officially reformatted the hard drive, and it's sitting in my room waiting for the day my mom decides to set up a yard sale this year.  Fortunately that fixed the "usb malfunctioning" issue, but at this point, the old computer is better off being used by someone that needs a starter/back up computer, or by a computer geek/tech that wants to modify the hell out of it, or use the insides for spare parts.

Dell Dimension 8300
Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.60 GHz
768MB Ram
300GB Harddrive
CD-RW Discdrive
nVidia GeForce4 MX440 with AGP8X
Creative SB Live! Series soundcard

I'm selling this for $100, which i think is a good deal considering that when I bought the computer, it was only 512mb Ram and only had a 120GB harddrive.  Over the years i added a third 256mb stick and replaced the hard drive since the old one blue screened forever after a bad thunderstorm one night.

Yes to both, but the only MAJOR data that i lost was all of my SmFiles i created over the years when i used to be a SMFile artist for Stepmania.  Otherwise everything else was just games and programs i got back quickly after I got the new harddrive, lol

i actually have a 256GB external harddrive that i use as a backup for anything I want to backup, but at the time i was in the middle of reformatting THAT too considering that it had some sort of I/O error and couldnt read files correctly after i downloaded a torrent conatining a shitload of GBA roms plus the emulator.

How did you get a computer from Dell for that cheap? O.O Unless the american version of Dell is different than in Canada, over here I remember their stuff was usually considerably more expensive than Staples, The Source and even Sears (back when they still sold computers). Only Tanguay was worse.

Also, back in 2003-08, it seemed like Dell laptops used to break more often than other brands. ???

Well the cheapest computer dell has on their website over here in the states is $299 (dunno what that is in canadian looneys), but the parts inside arent really too great unless you are the type of person that doesnt download alot of games/videos that need a little kick to it, then you'll be fine.  So far I've only used 80GB of hard drive space out of 1TB, but its mostly for programs and games i used on my old computer, which run more smoothly and quickly now.  Only newest majorly complex game i got for it was Sonic Generations on steam, which even though in its lowest resolution settings still lags a little, gets the job done. Plus, if i ever wanted to mod my computer to add newer better parts (I.E. more advance video card), then theres like 4 empty extra slots in the back of the computer for me to do that.

Also I usually stick with desktops cause they are easier to fix... more room to take apart/put together stuff.  With laptops I'm always paranoid when ficing them since everything is literally jammed inside one square box and god forbid i loose a screw or forget to put a piece back in... game over, lol.

Yeah I was talking mostly about a few years ago, when at my work we regularly got Dell flyers. Usually, back then, for a Dell computer that costed $699.99 for certain specs, you could get the same equivalent at Staples for between $100 and 200 cheaper. LCD monitors were even worse: Usually Dell didn't have any under $400 and an equivalent at Staples could go for as low as $130.

Ameublement Tanguay/Tanguay Électronique computers were far worse, though: one year ago, for $499.99, your computer only had 2 GB of RAM, on-board video and a 320 GB hard drive.

Also yeah my mom had an Acer laptop until a year ago that broke after 4 years of use. Getting it repaired at the store would have costed higher than buying a new one.

ugh, i'm not too fond of Acers, on account that they are really easy to break and don't perform as great as the other leading brands

You're going to have a hard time selling that old computer for $100. I sell secondhand computers on the side as a hobby, and Pentium 4 systems tend to go for $30 to $50, depending on the specifications.
