O.O
-
IT'S OVER $9000!!!!!!
-
Holy price Batman!
It can't really be worth that much, can it?
-
Well... TI is awesome, now.
-
That's insane! :o
-
... what would the point of that software even be dare i ask.................................
-
Edit:wrong thread!
-
Is this a "parser hook" so to speak?
-
I believe this is real. But I also think the library is free to download. Maybe the price wrapped around. *shrugs*
-
I believe it -- though thats a bit much. :P though not for bug companies! xD
It seems as If it lets you do pretty much anything you want with .DLL files, and I guess that can be nifty in many circumstances... :P
-
This is real - for more info, see here:
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/detours/
Typically used by the industry, but also used by some software crackers (and script kiddies, to tack that on).
You can get a lower version copy for free here:
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/d36340fb-4d3c-4ddd-bf5b-1db25d03713d/default.aspx
I have a feeling that they did the extreme pricing not just for getting money, but to keep this out of the software cracker's hands... Of course, some random guy in the industry will probably torrent it or something... ::)
-
That's an insane price!
Imagine if it was Apple software, though...

The cost couldn't go much higher though it is already >9000.
What is the use of this software?

True, the price might not go much higher, but the software could be much more limited.
-
Note, to clear any confusion, my TI comment was meant to say that this M$ software price made TI calculators look cheap.
-
It's for manipulating and doing things to existing programs that weren't designed to do it.
Also, the 32-bit version is free, I think through version 2.1.
I was using it to hook the network functions to a game to block an exploit that crashes you from reaching my client(I was bored. :P)
Oh, and this isn't a joke, I don't think.
-
Y'all should see the pricetag on some military equipment sometime its kinda sad at points.
50 thousand dollar usa circuit boards
-
Woah, are they all by Microsoft?
-
Nah I'm pretty sure they are made by a defense contractor.
But they use a lot of windows based apps
-

Yeah, 10 year old circuit boards at that. However, the military a) Has no sense of "market price" and b) puts everything through a billion tests, which is most of the cost.
At least in the American military's case, the latest gaming consoles have more advanced chips than even our latest missiles :P
-
It reminds me how our government wants to pay $15 billions for 65 new planes, while they could simply buy older ones from other countries for cheaper. I mean we could even get more for a lower price, plus Canada isn't in constant danger of being invaded or involved in massive wars.
-
The US is in danger of that, but we still use very outdated techology.
The Most recent version of the "Abram" Tank came out(entered general production) about 5 years ago and still only one base in the US has them
-
And $7,600 coffee makers for military planes :P
But wtf ... even M$ software can't be that expensive, can it? $999995 is the kind of price you put on software to prevent anyone except criminal hackers from buying it.
-
It legitimately costs that much, mostly because there are very few places where it's worthwhile to use. Basically, you're using it for anti-virus or viruses.
-
wait, but isn't lower demand supposed to lower the cost?
-
Supply and Demand kinda falls apart when your supply is near-infinite.
Edit: 600th post!
-
I still don't get why this should cost more because it has limited uses
-
They're highly specific limited uses that MS has spent a long time developing for, they need to recoup their development costs somehow.
Basically, it takes highly skilled labor to produce, therefore they spend a large chunk of change. There are few buyers, so they must charge a lot to make their investment back.
-
OK that makes sense.
-
Those few buyers are places like McAfee and Symantic, too, so they are willing to shell out the large sums of money for it.
-
And then there are the criminals who'll pay for it
-
Supply and Demand kinda falls apart when your supply is near-infinite.
Or if your demand is infinitely determined to get one specific brand, like with Apple customers.
-
And the one place with tanks moved to fort benning ga, my basic training company now trains tankers.
At least we aren't using the really old tech that stuff is huge
-
"And 2 hours later an open-source version was released".
-
I was told Fort Hood, TX was the only place with the M1A2's
-
You'd be really hard pressed to come up with an opensourced detours that works at all
-
Is this a really hard thing to code or something?
-
Yea. Basically, what it lets you do is take over functions and stuff in existing code.
void return1()
{
return 1;
}
I could then modify that with a detour to return 2 or whatever I want, inside the compiled binary.
-
So this basically gives you ultimate control over an application?
-
in capable hands, pretty much.
-
I can see how this would be of use to hackers. I kind of want to play around with it now
-
have fun crashing stuff. :P
-

Someone's probably gonna pirate it soon.
-
You can get the older versions for free, legally. The only advantage this has is that it works on 64-bit applications too.
-
I wonder if this works on linux
-
I wonder if this works on linux
Consider the following: Microsoft made it.
-
It might be able to run with wine or mono. I might download the free version to test it later
-
The manouver center of exelence is now fort benning, I was told that the tabks from knox were going there.
We saw a lot. Of tanks on trains while I was doing bct.
But that was all here say.
In othernews don't ask don't tell repeal trainings gonna be comming up in the next few months
-
That's not a program, it's a bunch of code you include into a homemade C++ app to hook functions.
-
What Netham?
-
It's not a program, it's sourcecode that you include into a program.
-
Why hasn't someone leaked it onto the internet then I wonder? does it require some kind of authentication to make sure you have the right to use it?

Well, there is a free version...

64-bit compatibility is worth ten thousand bucks? O.O
