Title: Logos
Post by: Deep Toaster on May 14, 2011, 03:20:34 pm
Ever notice how logos are getting more "modern," meaning flatter, more symmetrical, and lighter? Personally I think they should have stuck with the old ones. Take IE as an example (since we can always laugh at IE):

Old:
New:

Sure, the second is shiny and all, but IMHO it just doesn't look as-- Not sure how to say it, but the old one just plain looked better.

And M$ isn't the only one doing these redesign "improvements." Even Google Chrome's logo has been updated (http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2011/03/16/google-chrome-logo-updated-now-flatter-cuter-and-more-balanced/), as I'm sure all Chrome users have noticed.

Old:
New:
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d0/Chrome_Logo.svg/256px-Chrome_Logo.svg.png)(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e8/Google_Chrome_2011_logo.svg/256px-Google_Chrome_2011_logo.svg.png)

I know Google cares a lot about simplicity (that's what I love about the company, and Apple too), but somehow the new logo just doesn't look as good. It's not as realistic, certainly, but I don't think that's the problem. Maybe it's just that it doesn't look as much like a Pokéball (http://www.labnol.org/internet/google-chrome-logo-design-inspiration/4414/) anymore?

Plus, the new logo seems to be lighted from the top. That, plus the fact that the human eye has a greater affinity for reddish hues, means that the top looks larger than the bottom, and when the logo is scaled down to fit on the Vista Quick Launch bar, it looks like it's looking downward. It's depressing :(

Luckily, seems like Google's switching back to the old logo (http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2011/03/25/chrome-changes-its-logo-again-pictures/) with the next release. That means this downward-facing plate's only here for Chrome version 11, which I really think is a relief. I miss the old logo a lot.

So, what do you think? Old or new?

I actually think that both new designs are prettier and easier on the eyes.

I prefer older ones, although I like the nostalgic/retro feel of newer ones. Back in the days most logos were flat too.

This is cool, too :P (It pictures how IE feels like when you're testing new web designs)

My favorite IE icon is IE 6. It looks more like an icon, unlike the others that use more colors and shading and stuff... Why do companies switch logos so often, anyway?

Even weirder is when companies change their main (corporate) logos, then spend tens of millions of dollars to replace the physical logos on their buildings around the world, when the difference between the logos is really insignificant (or worse).

My favorite IE icon is IE 6. It looks more like an icon, unlike the others that use more colors and shading and stuff...

Me too. It's clean and simple.

At first the logo was on the newtab screen, but then it replaced the desktop icon too.  :(  I'm glad they're changing back.

The old google icon was definitely better. The FF icon doesn't appear to have changed much over time

It has. I like the new FF logo.

One of the most important changes (that nobody notices, but everybody unconsciously likes) is that the tail now wraps around the planet. It's gone from flat to 3D, pretty much the opposite of the Chrome logo.

Is it bad if I've actually started liking this song?

EDIT: sorry wrong thread but it still applies to  Darl181's post
I like the new proposed version

Sometimes logos changes slightly each time, and the change is so not noticeable that over the span of a few years we don't even notice. A few years later we look back in time and are like: "Woah! that looks so old skool!"

As for Omnimaga logo, it changed completely between 2001 and 2004, but after 2004 it didn't anymore :P

I wonder about Cemetech... it would be interesting to compare each site logos over the time.

EDIT: Here we go. My favorites are the 2002 and 2008 ones.

2000

2002 (?)

Late 2005

Late 2006

Early 2007 (Same as in 2005)

Late 2008

EDIT: Now Omnimaga logos, aside from calc ones, just for fun:

They're in waybackarchive, which seems to have a really slow server...

Oh I think you have to right-click->copy link->paste into address bar. Archive probably disallows hotlinking on some servers.

EDIT Nvm I found alternate mirrors for some old ones and the rest were still on the current site.
