Price range €300-€400
Battery life with normal use > 1 day
My current phone is a samsung galaxy gio with android 2.3, a scratched up screen and a battery life of 6-7 hours with minimal use.
The new phone is supposed to be the opposite of this old phone. I want to use it as a digital agenda for school, so it needs to have a nice large screen so I can fit all appointments on there.

Joking aside, avoid most Samsung phones unless reviews state that it has a good battery life. Juju's mom have a Samsung Galaxy Note that is larger than 80's cellphones and battery lasts about 10 minutes. My small Galaxy i551 isn't that much better. To survive with more than one day of battery life, I have to disable every syncing/notification feature and never use Twitter.
As for Apple, you'll pay for the Apple logo and a locked down device that you'll have to reformat every few week. Also their touchscreen is out of sync with the content, which makes it incredibly hard to type text. Their technical specs aren't too bad, though.
-
As for Apple, you'll pay for the Apple logo
Sure. (Although other comparable smartphones aren't very cheap neither)
and a locked down device
Sure again, until you jailbreak it if you ever need whatever can be offered through jailbreaking (btw iOS7 has some very nice additions whose ideas probably came from the jailbreaking community)
I was myself using a jailbroken iPhone 3GS for 3 years and the few things I was actually using it for was SBSettings (quick settings toggle, like wifi, etc.), removing system icons I don't use, and using BiteSMS for quick-replies. Now, I only miss BiteSMS's quick-reply, which was just a few-seconds-time-saver, since the rest is already there.
that you'll have to reformat every few week.
Wait.... What ?
The aforementioned iPhone 3GS had only been restored 2 times. In 3 years.
Why would you want/need a higher formatting frequency ?
Also their touchscreen is out of sync with the content, which makes it incredibly hard to type text.
Wait... We clearly aren't talking about Apple i* devices anymore, here, right ?
Among the smartphones I have tested, the actual touch interface is, to me, the best.
Other manufacturers don't seem to be this precise, but do have a better screen quality in terms of contrast, brightness etc (with super amoled and stuff). But that's when you really want to get technical anyway. For 99% of people, A standard "Retina"-like screen, amoled or not, is perfect.
Anyway, the OP wants a "nice large screen" so probably some recent Samsung/HTC stuff ?

Nexus 4 is €250 and it's awesome. ;)
-
I have the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 and it's pretty good. Great battery life too.
-
That ace2 is not a huge improvement over my current phone.
-
Adriweb I had to reformat my iPod Touch 4 three times because it crashed beyond possible recovery, and two of these times were before it was jailbreaked. Although it crashed much less often than Android, when it did it was really bad. I have never been forced to reformat my Android phone yet.
As for out of sync screen, almost everytime I typed a letter, especially the ones on the edges of the keypad, it instead typed the letter next to it. The worst part, though, was clicking links: In order to access a link without clicking the wrong one, I had to zoom in until the font height takes almost half of the vertical screen height. Also, one of the most annoying thing was how the screen kept dezooming by itself when scrolling. I hardly ever had any of those problems with my Samsung Galaxy i551.

Galaxy s3 13 months old for €280: http://tweakers.net/aanbod/572432/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-16gb-blauw.html
Replacement batteries are super cheap on ebay. Better keep one in stock in case I need it.
Might get this one.
-
Yeah the GS3 is pretty good too but the N4 outperforms it while being cheaper for a brand new one. ;) Not to mention that it has a pretty active ROM scene.
-
Only problem with the nexus4 it is that the battery is not removable. If it completely locks up it can only shut down when the battery runs out.
-
Never had battery issues with it. ;) But you're right about that. (though you can find external batteries that work with anything)
-
+1 for Nexus 4. If it locks up, you just hold the power button for like 8 seconds, it will soft reset regardless of the situation[1] (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?s=dcd7e0c769ed3408fdb1db0b8b5596b9&t=1984069). It haven't had to do that with my GS2 since I installed Cyanogenmod 10.1 (Android 4.2) almost a year ago.
-
If you really want battery life, you might want to consider buying a normal phone instaed of a smartphone. I am currently using a nokia C2-01, and it does the job very well for me. It's controlled by normal buttons instead of a touch screen (which also means that the screen is smaller than on smartphones), but the screen size and resolution isn't that bad. Also, the phone is very sturdy. I have dropped it several times, and there are no cracks or scratches in the screen. It has also got a few built-in apps, and most of them are usefull (agenda, a thing to save notes, a timer, an MP3 player, a video player, and a few games including snake). The video player doesn't support a lot of formats, though.
It also has got a reasonable camera (3.2 megapixels), and a battery life of almost 2 weeks with minimal use and 2-3 days when you use it (and especially it's camera, which seems to use a lot of power) a lot.
So if you're only goning to use it as a cellphone and agenda, I would suggest this phone or a simular one. With a price of ~€80, it's well below your budget as well. However, if you are looking for a mobile gaming and internet device, then it is less suitable for you, since this phone has no wifi and not a lot of games are made for it.
Edit: Both me (who owns this phone) and my friend (who owns a Samsung Galaxy Mini) agree that this cellphone is more usefull for school stuff.
-
Read title^^
No offense to you nor your phone. I really need a smartphone.
-
In any case if you need a phone that lets you type stuff frequently (eg the agenda stuff) and requiring you to click on smaller stuff, then a smartphone with a larger screen is a must. You might want one that fits in your pocket, though, so it's safer from thieves.

Ubuntu edge. Nuff said.

I have an LG Optimus G and I really like it. Battery life isn't great but it is decent. Really quick and responsive but I just broke the digitizer :( Now I need to order another one which is around $80. That Ubuntu Edge looked pretty sweet though.

Ubuntu Edge is dead, because they failed to get $32 million before the deadline.
-
Just because they failed to get $32 Million before the deadline, does NOT mean it is dead.
"Thanks for being part of the biggest crowdfunding campaign ever, and look out for Ubuntu on smartphones in 2014."
I don't mean to be rude, but maybe you should check up on it a little bit more. :P
-
There will be Ubuntu on smartphones, but Ubuntu Edge is dead (http://money.cnn.com/2013/08/22/technology/mobile/ubuntu-edge-crowdfunding/index.html).

My pockets are large enough for a n4 or s3. I think I am gonna go with the nexus because of the support by google and the active rom community.
-
I still cannot decide. Both phones are priced the same in my country and specs are realy close. I think both phones have their own unique look and battery life is similar. The only differences are: n4 cannot take sd cards, but the s3 has a lot of samsung apps crap on it while the n4 is vanilla.
Help D:
-
I don't see the problem with Samsung apps crap. Just don't use them. Maybe they waste space, but with a sd card that should not be a problem (my Samsung doesn't support moving apps to SD but maybe the S3 does, idk). Also, once rooted, there is surely a way to get rid of those apps (my Samsung is rooted but as I said, I don't care about those apps, I just don't use them).
-
Root=> Vanilla ROM installation, or ROMs like Cyanogen or else... :-°
-
With a phone this expensive I'd rather not root it right away :-X
I am gonna check out the n4 at the electronics store. They have it up for display.
-
I had a ROM running on my nexus 4 10 minutes after unboxing it. Rooting it right away is a good idea because it wipes all your data.
BTW I'm gonna bake myself my own ROM for my nexus 4 and 7. :D
-
Yeah if you decide to root a phone, I would advise against doing it until your warranty is void.
-

Screw that. I rooted mine the first day and unlocked the bootloader as well as install CyanogenMod. I use an HTC One, Which is an awesome phone BTW. As for battery life I can easily get 1 day on it with light/medium usage.
This is how mine looks right now.

Before I upgraded to the S4 my S3 had 2 day battery life playing music the whole time. If you install a custom rom and kernel then undervolt the phone can last for a really long time(stock battery). I really like the samsung phones, but without rooting I would much prefer a nexus device.
Also if you aren't having your phone continuously run(like with music) undervolting won't make too big of a difference as it'll spend most of it's time in deep sleep so need to risk messing things up.
-
Speaking of under volting the nexus 4 can be easily brought down by 100-150 mV. O.O
-
By the way, on smaller phones the newer Facebook updates are a mega drain on performance. Take that into account too if you use FB a lot x.x
-
Np I never use facebook.
-
Facebook just don't work here. Never get any updates. Also, It's not llike I use Facebook everyday, I just don't like FB (some lessons are on the student group...)
-

So can the S4. It depends on your specific device though for that range. I was actually running at -225 for a while the other day(with underclocking to 81-726)
-
O.O
BTW I switched my n4 to cyanogen 10.2 nightly and Trinity kernel and it's crazy fast now, also battery life is good enough for school use (had over five hours screen on time today and NO power drain while locked). And I still think that it's far superior to the gs3.
-
My mom bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for free (plus a 2-year contract), so far it's a pretty good choice.
-
That's good to hear because I'm wondering if I should buy a Note 2 myself. I've almost only heard good things about it
-
Yeah, Samsung is known to make pretty good phones. Myself I have a Galaxy Note (first of the name) and it also goes pretty well.
-
Guys, this isn't making stuff easier for me :P. I hope to be able to choose which phone I want once I get my hands on the n4 for testing it in the electronics store.
-
The issue is that in most locations, finding a non-shit phone that is under $500 is next to impossible unless you run into a going-out-of-business sale. :P
-
N4 and S3 are both €350 inc. shipping here in webshops. (about $470)
-
On the Play Store the N4 is €249 here. They lowered the price recently beacuse the N5 is coming soon.
-
Yeah but I cannot order from the german nor french playstore sadly :(
Can someone from europe buy me a nexus4 and ship it to my house? I will pay for the phone, shipping to your house and shipping to my house. Please PM me :)
-
If I could I would but sadly I can't.
-
You can actually buy a non-shit phone for rather cheap, maybe even for free, but you'll have to buy a rather expensive 3-year contract with that. My mom was kinda lucky to get the Note 2 for free with a 2-year contract.
-
In the end you pay about $60 more for the phone though while the price of phone drops as you pay for it every month(not for you ofc since you comitted to it earlier.) I think it's best to save up and wait for a phone to drop in price.
-
Got an S3. Just works fine and swipe :)
-
Cool. The important part is that you like it. :)
-
I just hope I don' t drop it by accident though. It's quite a large phone
-
Ya man! great choice! ;)
-
Yeah, be careful with it - I advice getting a protector of some kind. My (slightly clumsy) parents both have one, and both their screens are cracked (my mother's across the screen and my father's under the homebutton)
-
The official ones from samsung were €30. I think that is a little bit expensive for a flipcover. I am gonna get a cheaper one for €5.
-
Sorry to bump this but I finally got a Nexus 5 from Videotron. I was supposed to get an ALCATEL ONE TOUCH M’POP for $0.00 with a $29.95/month plan (100 Minutes+unlimited weekend/evening calls+text), but since I already had 30 mbps internet + residential phone with the same company, I got a promotion where for $32.95/month, I would get an unlimited call/text/2GB data phone plan, a Nexus 5 for $0 and an unlimited home internet upgrade (so I get unlimited bandwidth instead of 150 GB). The promotion+contract lasts for two years and they are leasing me a wifi router for free during the entire plan.
So I figured that for $3 more I would get the Nexus instead of another phone that will be obsolete in 2 years :P.
Now I just need to figure out if I have to pay for a second copy of Tapatalk or not.

-
Good choice here IMO. I wanted it too but sadly Videotron does not offer mobile services at my place.
Edit: ninja'd. Also if you link your Google account you shouldn't have to buy it again.

Yup, although I'm still trying to figure out where is located the SMS function <_<
EDIT: Nvm it's merged into Google Hangouts now.

Yeah i saw about Tapatalk. Glad to see since I didn't feel to pay for it a second time. :P
Now I need to figure out how to play music on it since the stock media player app is gone. Hopefully I can send my own MP3s to my phone via USB.

You can. I recommend Rocket Player or Poweramp, or you could just use the stock Play Music.
-
For a music player, I'd recommend GoneMad. I don't remember what were the limitations of the free versions but it was so awesome I bought the paid version.
I tried all players you can think of, Poweramp, JetAudio, n7, Player Pro, VLC, NRG, I don't remember if I tried Rocket Player but only two players among the ones I tried could play all the musics in my librairy: JetAudio and GoneMad. And what's great with that choice is that JetAudio was the one with the worst interface of all players I tried while GoneMad was the one with the best interface :D
-
Right now I just use the default player but the interface is weird so I'll probably look into the ones you mentionned. Thank you :)
-
I use the stock music player on my Samsung Galaxy Ace II and it's still the best one I've found: lightweight and can play all audio formats (even tried with non-standard formats like m4a, which many players don't support). Best thing about the player, tho, is the colors. I don't like the bright look of many new google apps, I prefer dark.

1) Can it play 96KHz sampled ogg files ? Because most players I tried can play "regular" ogg files but only JetAudio and GoneMad were able to open 96KHz sampled ogg files among the list I posted.
2) GoneMad's interface is mostly dark.
-
I don't know, I never tried to play them, mainly because I dont have any music in that format :P But I'll look into GoneMad, it sounds nice (pun not intended)
-
The only problem is that it is not free :P
You have a 14 days trial but then you need an unlocker.
What you can do otherwise is install Appsales, put GoneMad on your watchlist and get it while it's on sale (I was lucky, I got it on sale without even using Appsales yet o.o).
-
well, at least I can try it :P
-
I tried many players as well and I can recommend rocket and gonemad (I use the latter). All the other ones are too bloated for me or don't have enough features to be called a music player.
-
I use VLC because it can play m4a files (the preinstalled player couldn't) and because it's free. But you can't save playlists and it takes two seconds to load every time you go back to the menu, so the other players suggested here are probably better :P
-
The only gripe I have about the Nexus 5 so far is pocket-texting/msging/calling attempts. I didn't have this happen with my two previous devices. Now I had to password-protect my phone so that when I walk at work or elsewhere it won't send tweets/texts/phone calls by itself <_<
In many occasions some settings menus were open, so imagine if I accidentally enable data usage then open a very large Youtube vid O.O
-
You should get an htc freestyle like me. It's so awesome: apps only cost $5-$10 on average, music glitches and plays out the speakers instead of headphones whenever a text is received, and you don't have to worry about wifi being slow because it doesn't have wifi! And as an special feature, it shuts off whenever dropped or even set down.

I bought a Moto G LTE (4G), for 229 euro. It is simple a sublime mobile phone, the only thing lacking it the camera which is 5MP. But beside that it is truly a very good phone. The display is super, battery life is very good and speed is great (you get what expect from a quad core).
I recommend this phone to anyone, it definitely competes with phones that easily cost 200 euro more.

HTC phones seems quite problematic when it comes to problems or failure rates. Juju had two HTC charger plugs break on him in a row and he never had issues with other phones he got.
