(http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/1996.png) (http://xkcd.com/768/)
Wow! And its so true too. The sad part is they've actually gotten even worse over time!
-
oh my god...
...They got the screen dimensions wrong :P
-
Lol nice XD
I wonder if that is inspired from the /. news?
-
LMAO that, is awesome! :D
-
Lol :)
Yay bad hardware!
-
That is so great haha.
-
Hahaha. I love xkcd. LOL at the mouseover text.
-
They got the speed wrong too. :(
10Mhz is a lie.
-
"around 10 Mhz" i think is supposed to be a compromise between 6 and 15
and aren't the dimensions correct....?
-
That is so true. ;D
-
and aren't the dimensions correct....?
i think they're referring to the only 95x63 pixels that are available to the non-assembly user
-
I've always wondered why TI never dropped the price on these things...
-
Haha, I lol'd when I saw that! ;D
-
its because ti can get away with whatever they want. we all need these calculators for our friends and for math at school. we keep buying :P. i love geting ti-84+ silvers on ebay. i can usually get them for under 40 if i try hard enough.
-
lol :D
And, random "I know too much about calcs" thing: Today's comic is no. 768, and 768 is the size of the screen buffer in bytes :P
-
It appears they updated the comic over the night or this morning. Last night the res was 96x62, now it says the right one: 96x64
-
And apparently a small typo in the alt-text was fixed. "oi TI-BASIC" was changed to the correct "of TI-BASIC"
-
Hooray! Fact checking ftw ^^ Im surprised nobody on the discussion board over at Xkcd pointed out the typo. You'd think there would be some overlap in Calc programmers and Xkcd forum users :P
-
Maybe some TI users are staff at XKCD. We never know. #tcpa has like 60 users in the channel, for example, most of which used TI calcs at one point. Also someone may have simply e-mailed them about the error.
-
[Thread merged with the one above]
-
This has already been posted: http://ourl.ca/6377 (http://ourl.ca/6377)
It's still amusing to read again, though :P
-
Ah, crap. That's what I get for not checking. x.x
On that note, I'll thread hijack this to let everyone know that college sucks and my activity is only going to get even WORSE.
I'm still keeping up with everyone's projects... but that's all I have time for. =(
-
You aren't alone, there was an additional duplicate thread earlier. I'd link it, but it seem to have been deleted (or merged, I didn't check that thoroughly)
Edit: Too bad... :( I hope you'll find time eventually
-
Goes to show that Omnimaga is still really active. I only checked the 'recent posts' thing at the top of the index and didn't see anything.
However, I have no idea if I'll have time again until I graduate at this rate. Maybe the periods between semesters... but that's about it.
Sorry everyone. Also, if you read this <insert admin here>, feel free to demote me. I don't really deserve the position anymore.
-
Sorry to hear AP, I hope you at least have some occasional free time from time to time to work on some random stuff, or at least some vacations x.x
Btw, I'll merge this topic with the other one I think, to avoid duplicate discussions x.x
EDIT: Done
-
* calcdude steals {AP}'s position :P (lol j/k)
Yeah, the post rate has remained pretty high :)
Hope you find time!
-
Yeah it's still in the 100s right now, which is quite good considering it's Summer.
-
Actually, I suddenly had a thought about having a position with the permissions of regular members that's called "Retired Coder of Tomorrow" or something similar. Just because I think if someone made the position then had to retire they should still be recognized more easily. (This goes for people other than me and even staff from the old sites too.) This wouldn't apply to members that were kicked out or banned, of course.
Anyway, just a thought while we were already derailed.
-
Yeah, the reason why I did not add such position is because it's a major PITA to edit EzPortal afterward, same for other mods. By default, all permissions are disabled for new groups. That's like 100-200 permissions to copy one by one, making sure to apply the right ones. Also, even on the old board, the permission thing were an issue for additional groups. I considered removing the retired groups many times, too. In fact, if I remember, around late 2007, I did, but I'm not sure anymore. Beforehand, all staff that contributed enough were put in a retired group afterward. Those who did nothing, though, were put back as members.
It would be just too much work. One thing I could do eventually, though, is add a page listing all the forum staff, though, as well as the new board retired staff (later if the old board returned, I could also add the old board staff as well).
EDIT: Actually, those retired groups were removed long before 2007. According to the following pic, they must have been taken down between April 9th and October/November 2006:
If I remember, back then, it had to do with setting up permissions for the sub-forums but I am sure there was something else too. We even used to have special member groups for contest winners, too, but they were removed as well for that reason. Now it is 10x worse x.x

This XKCD cartoon got mentioned on the tinspire Google group. By merely posting a link to the news on /., the probable trigger for the XKCD cartoon, mentioning that most commenters on /. missed the point, and later explaining some of the points that had been missed, I eventually triggered a post full of flamebait, cluelessness, disrespect and even slander from someone with tremendous blinders: Nelson Sousa. And you haven't seen his private mails, where he kept top-posting twice after I explained him that it was bad and that avoiding it was a basic netiquette rule...

But don't even try wasting your time with the people on the tinspire group: most of them are North-American-minded (copyright, licensing, etc. - instead of encouraging creativity) teachers who hate games, and are happy to stay undisturbed together among like-minded individuals... You aren't going to convince them that their opinions suck.
-
This is a funny XKCD! Nice find! ;D
-
Yeah, I saw. Pretty sad, really.
On Cemetech the comic was received negatively, too, but they did not defend TI and the like, like Nelson did. People were more upset at the bashing of graphing calculators, I think, and probably did not get the joke. What was posted on the TI group is sad.
-
I found it amusing. Just because it bashes something I'm for doesn't mean it can't be funny ;D

I initially subscribed to this group for the hacking talk, but I soon noticed that most of the convo was 'teacher spam' or similar stuff. The tinspire group sucks, it really does. </rant>
-
Well, this group is mostly aimed at teachers, so it's not quite surprising that most of the conversation is teacher-oriented :)
That said, being a teacher doesn't necessarily mean be anti-users and anti-games (most people there seem to be), critor is living proof of that.

North America's a big place, not all of us think like that.

That's obviously true :)
Well, subscribing to the group was a bad assessment of mine. I thought it was created by Nspire hackers, but it turned out differently.
-
Netham: I know that, sorry if you thought I was making a generalization :(
-
XKCD is popular. This was cited in almost all forums and sometimes more than 1 thread per forum.
It is without funny. It is a comic, it should be funny so don't worry too much about technical stuff.
Sorry the around 10 MHz, he says around so it is not incorrect and actually not far from the average of 6 and 15MHz. Plus 10 seems a 10x less than the 100 MHz.
The resolution, ram, etc. were corrected.

Relatively interesting read. Shows the other side (opposite of open community).
I did not read the entire topic but too bad no one noted that was released a fractal program by Levak and a better TI-84+SE emulator to Nspire so development to Nspire is not game oriented. They see ticalc news and Nelson admits don't visit TI-Bank.
Side note: For some reason I thought I would not be comfortable if I met Nelson Sousa. :-\
-
I hit the random button on xkcd, and this is what popped up: http://xkcd.com/351/ (http://xkcd.com/351/)
-
I just got around to looking through recent XKCD's since being grounded, and ZOMG CALCS

From Nelson Sousa: "ticalc.org's forum is almost near to useless" Uh....ticalc doesn't actually have a forum, and he didn't mention omnimaga, cemetech, or TIBD.
-
And lets not forget he SUPPORTS ticalc on his site.
lol "OMFG BETTER SLIDING!! YAY" still makes me laugh and cry, silly tinspire group

did someone on there say that jailbreaking iphones/itouch/ipad's is illegal? Well have we got some news for them :P as of yesterday, it is completely legal in the states :P
-
Oh yeah! I heard that on NPR! I was like yes! It may be the reason I'm getting an itouch!
About the link from MRide, did you notice if you click the comic it goes to a rickroll? That's the 4th time I've gotten rickrolled today!
-
It really scares the crap out of me that there are people who read a comic (that only complained about TI graphing calculators remaining at a high price despite the fact that the hardware hasn't really been changed in years) as "everyone is mad about TI's new OS" and then go on to actually argue about it.
Really? Just because the comic happened a bit after the new OS? Seriously, that whole discussion was a joke and not the funny kind of joke, the stupid kind.
-
I know, they really need a reality check, I hate it >:(
-
From Nelson Sousa: "ticalc.org's forum is almost near to useless" Uh....ticalc doesn't actually have a forum, and he didn't mention omnimaga, cemetech, or TIBD.
Nelson Sousa actually has some good Nspire stuff himself in ticalc.
Not sure too, what is tical.orgc's forum for him.
I doubt he is referring to http://www.ticalc.org/community/articles/ as a forum because few people today know about it because the articles are completely inactive.
-
At least, jailbreaking "wireless telephone handsets" is explicitly legal. But calculators are not "wireless telephone handsets" ;)
-
I wonder if this will eventually be extended to such devices?
-
Maybe in the next DMCA exemption round, in three years.
-
As soon as Ndless was published the first thing that appeared (and so far
the only one that is not a proof of concept or demo) was a Gameboy emulator,
just a port from other gameboy emulators, and ported versions of gameboy
games. Besides the skill required to hack Nspire OS and create Ndless and
the skill required (in a much lesser extent) to port the gameboy emulator,
where's the skill in getting yet another gameboy game running on an
emulator? And yet, that's all you see showing up out there from the
programmer communities that keep saying "give us programming power and we'll
change the world": games. Games, games and more games. All different
platform games ever invented, all shoot-em-up games ever invented.
Unfortunately, you almost never see a really original game ever being
developed or a really original tool that is not simply a port from something
else. And that's where the true skill is. Programming is much, much more
than knowing how to code and port.
Argh. I did not port that Gameboy emulator. *facepalm*
-
I knew that, but I didn't attack him on that front, his post was already ridiculous enough.
You have an excellent occasion to write him, right on the Google tinspire group, that he should get a clue before posting. Double bonus points for insisting on the acute cluelessness of "ti-bank's forum is actually useless", in the following paragraph.
-
Awwm poor calc84, no one understands his gb emulator....
I think someone needs a hug!
That aside, I want to facepalm too, you *didnt* port the gb emulator, Nelson should go back to his troll cave
-
Yeah true, it's more than a port. Also Ndless just recently came out and only work on one OS. It's obvious that new games woN't come out that fast. Also, assembly is not that easy, so it takes a while to code stuff sometimes. Large games also requires a lot of planning.
-
Argh.
Uninformed rants are a lot worse than just rants :P
-
I think nelson should get the facts straight before trolling, at least my trolls were factually right ;D
-
lol, nelson's trolls were a riot. ;D I can't believe he put this in his post:
just a few remarks (I don't want to start a flame war, just expressing my
point of view, as biased as it may be; it's not my intention to convince
anybody I'm right):
He needs to stop being such a hypocrite. (Linking to the "useless" ticalc.org on his own website)
-
typically, people put "I don't mean to start a flame war" before their sentence to try to make their comments sound more credible. Sadly often their intention is to start a war in the first place :P
-
fb39ca4: agreed, that's what I wrote him too.
-
Oh, look at that, he claims that the games themselves are ported, no, that is me adding a .tns extension
...
-
LMAO, I've always thought this about calculators
-
That said if Nelson continues to bash the TI community and Nspire hacking (or if someone else does), we should try to not give them too much attention either, though, because then it would mean troll success to them. Attention is what they might want. :P
-
lol :D
And, random "I know too much about calcs" thing: Today's comic is no. 768, and 768 is the size of the screen buffer in bytes :P
I'm a bit late but I can't believe I didn't notice the 768 thing sooner x.x
I lol'ed when I noticed
