Title: Online RSS reader ?
Post by: Streetwalrus on April 05, 2013, 12:19:29 pm
So, yeah. Google is taking reader down in July  and I will find myself without any rss reader. I'm looking for a web based reader with an android app and if possible a computer app (Linux). Also a readability like feature (fetch the web page and make it clearer) would be awesome bit isn't necessary. ;)
Do you have any advice on what I should try ?

I might host a limited version of google reader. I'll let you guys know if I actually get one set up.

Or not, I thought that I saw somewhere that google reader was open source. It isn't.
I'll find a good feed reader for us and host it for us.

Yeah that's what I was expecting, g reader isn't open source. I'm sure we can come up with something way better though. ;)

Only ten days left before big G shuts down GReader. I switched to Feedly which is absolutely awesome and suit my needs very well. :D Their goal is to replace Google's service seamlessly and they even have a migration tool. I recommend you to switch if you didn't decide yet.

Don't most browsers have a RSS reader built in?

I switched to feedly as well.

Yes, but it's not synced across the web. The advantage of feedly, or google reader are that no matter what device you are on everything is synced. If you've already read something you don't have to remember, it remembers for you.

Oh ok thanks for the clarification. Of course I would probably not use such thing on a mobile device, though, because when I had notifications on my battery went from 100% to 30% in a few hours.

Feedly does not provide notifications, it's just an RSS reader synced to their servers.

Suggest it then :)
It's on the roadmap apparently.

EDIT: You can also use https://ifttt.com to get emails on new articles on feedly. Not as good as notifications, but it works.

I wouldn't use notifications if they were added. I was just answering DJ's concern about battery problems with notifications. The only feature that makes me happy with Feedly and formerly GReader is syncing and that's all I need since I subscribed to only 16 feeds. ;)
