Title: opera mini for iphone
Post by: Eeems on April 12, 2010, 10:08:18 pm
So, opera mini has been aproved in the appstore, and currently i am browsing with it :p
Unfortunatly there are some problems, like no autocorrect, and its not quite as smooth an expirience as safari, but it is much faster and large parts of it are way better. I still have to get use to the one tap to zoom thing though x.x
Anybody else trying it out?

I'm happy it came out on iPhone :D

I hope Firefox do the same, if not alerady. Is Opera Mini free? I hope it gets compatible with most web pages too

Unfortunatly Firefox has said that they will not port to the iphone anytime soon :(
Yes it is free, and it is compatable with most pages (well all i've come accross)
The no spell check is really bugging me though...
Its much much faster then safari at loading pages, and makes my browsing expurience much faster :p
Im really enjoying it :)
Although javascript is much slower in it :(

However, it is quite large for the Iphone, isn't it? I think the installer's around 200 MB, but that may be shrinkable.

Hey, who said you needed their permission to make an unofficial port? The source code is freely available, isn't it?

I don't think the code is available, so you can't do nothing.

Also, it works great on my non-iPhone, flip, tiny screen cellphone. Opera FTW. But I got problems with installing Opera Mini 5 beta, so I have to stick with OM4... But that's another story.

I have Opera Mini 5 on my phone, since the default browser sucks, but I'm not sure of how useful it can be on an iTouch, since Safari is a pretty good browser. I guess that Opera can be useful for iPhone users when they are not using Wifi, as Opera compresses web data through its servers for quicker loading time.
But I guess I'm gonna check it out, and who knows, maybe I'll change my mind and think that it's absolutely awesome once I try it! :P

I've downloaded and tried Opera. Now I definitely know that I prefer Safari...

EDIT: and no, the size isn't 200MB, it's actually less than 10.

Well  no actually it was a small download compared to most.
FireFox is open sourced so you can port it if you want, but it would be kind of hard to because you would have to completely re-write the interface (which is written in XUL btw) and porting the actual engine wouldn't be that hard due to the fact that all you have to do is use the mac version.

my two gripes so far with opera mini is the lack of auto-correct and how javascript isn't implemented correctly (reloads the page when you do some things...)
it also doesn't always let me post...

I personally dislike auto-correction on stuff because it ends up correcting words you don't want corrected then your sentences makes absolutely no sense if you forget to double-check your posts. I would rather have two spelling mistakes in someone's post that aren't too hard to decipher to a totally changed word that completely changes the meaning of a sentence x.x. In any case, I always set my spell-checkers to manual correction, so if a word is red-underlined, but I feel it doesn't need correction, I can leave it as it is.

yeah, well I've become so use to auto-correction that it's more work for me not to have it x.x

It works a hell of a lot better than safari on my 1G too.  Like, it actually loads the pages instead of piece at a time, and doesn't lag at all.  The only real bad thing is that there is only one distance you can zoom, and that isn't that bad, either. I highly recommend it over safari.
