With all the electronic innovations this year, it just keeps on getting better. According to qualcomm, the maker of the ever popular snapdragon series, smartphones that are equipped with the quad-core s4 series SoC mobile cpu's will have the graphics and computing horsepower to essentially replace the PS3, xbox 360, and other dedicated consoles.
Qualcomm will be showcasing the s4 off in its mobile conference of 2012.

Idea!!! I'll dump the idea of making a calc and make a portable game system that is just as good as commercial game systems!

Yeah. Onlive (a streaming game service) has an iPad and Android application in the works. This service is truly amazing. No lag as long as you have a decent internet connection
-
oh yeah i herd of onlive but i didnt know what it was exactly

While smartphones are a viable and profitable gaming platform, I do not see them replacing gaming consoles anytime soon. Gamers have strong emotional attachments to certain brands. (Nintendo fanboys, Sony fanboys, etc.) Also remember that personal computers were not able to phase out gaming consoles either.
Cloud based gaming, however, may reach some success. Consumers will be able to play their favorite consoles and games without having to buy special hardware upgrades.
This is all just my personal opinion. I can be completely incorrect. :P

I'm one of those Nintendo Fanboys :) I have loved Nintendo since I can remember.
edit: new Snapdragons + Nvidia Tegra = ultimate gaming phone/tablet.

In my view, nothing will ever replace sitting down on the couch with your friends and playing video games on your big Tv. :)
-
I agree Builderboy, but I can't wait to see a device with one of these... And the games they can support.

But didn't you see the pretty picture? You can plug a tablet into a big TV!

It seems Ralphdspam forgot a very important contingent of game console lovers - the TI contingent. ;-)
-
yeah i wouldnt really see consoles being phased out.. lol you just can't really do that, its something completely different.

oh my, their blazing fast processor has the power to match tech from six years ago?
phones are smaller than consoles, and thus will never be able to manage the same things unless they are significantly more expensive(assuming the consoles aren't horrendously overpriced). sure, it can manage the same things as a 360, but what about the next (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_U) line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Vita) of devices that will be showing up soon?
-
I agree. It won't happen for a while.
-
ok but im not saying that it will *practically* replace them, im just quoting what the ceo said in regards to how much power these new chips have (well they're not even cpu's anymore, they have so much more in them).
