Title: Using Technology to Pick up Chicks (or the male equivalent)
Post by: holmes221b on February 17, 2011, 01:20:01 pm
How many of y'all have ever used your knowledge of technology and programming as an ice-breaker with a hot girl? Or hot guy, if you're not into girls? It doesn't have to be for romantic reasons, either. I have used my knowledge of technology and programming as a conversation topic numerous times, none of which were romantically driven.
I'm asking mostly out of curiosity, but also because I have been offered a "job" of sorts to tutor a woman old enough to be my grandmother (at least, she claims to be a certain age, which, if true, would make her about as old as my grandmother) how to use a computer for her classes.

I have not used it as an icebreaker and I don't really know why... Well, I mean I have tried impressing a guy with what I know, but it doesn't help that it is usually after we have known each other and they find out pretty quickly that I don't actually know much :p... as a regular icebreaker (as in not for romantic reasons) then yes, I have used my knowledge of calcs...

"Check out my TI-89... it has a gameboy emulator! Yep, that's pokemon red version! Oh, this? This is my 84! Yeah, I made this program... I'm working on an RPG... uh-huh! Yes! oh, okay! What time?"

Okay, before I get off topic... >_>

(the "What time?" was actually in response to "so can you get that on my calculator? :P)

Whenever a girl knows I'm into 'computing' (as they say), they run away (not literally, methaforically).

Also, from personal experience, never mention you program calculators (not in Europe, at least), if you say are into computer programming, you look less of a nerd.

But yeah, I can't hide that I'm a programmer most of the times, some girls might even say 'That's cool'.

I generally use the games that I have or am making for the calculator as an icebreaker. "Hey, I have Super Mario", or "Hey, I'm making a Zelda clone", to the usual response of "Cool. Can you hook me up with that?" from guys or "That is awesome. I want that game." from girls. Once I talk to them regularly, regardless of gender, I usually avoid the topic of programming, unless the girl happens to be somewhat technology-minded. There are a few of my friends (girls) who I have taught or am teaching TI-Basic, meanwhile, I'm whipping out Axe stuff and they're like "WTF". They are also members of my website and support my projects.

My life is sad. I don't even really try to talk to girls.  The only ones I talk to are these friends I've know since 6th grade, friends I'v known since kindergarten, and this random girl I sit next to in Business who gets bored easily.   :P
I have absolutely no way to pick up anyone, but no desire to either.

I don't use programming much as a conversation starter, but my name is pretty much synonymous for two things at my school: Trumpet/Band and Calcs. :)
Title: Re: Using Technology to Pick up Chicks (or the male equivalent)

I just impress people by making up shit like "I'm currently the 2nd best assembly programmer in the world, I'm competing against the best to claim his title atm" or "I'm in a programming contest with 100,000 entrants, and in the final round it's me and 5 other people competing to win TI's annual $1mil scholorship prize"

and since non-programmers can be gullible dipshits it always works and I'm considered the "smartest guy in school" :)

Argh, I can never get the girls to stay away most of the time :P

@Ashbad you dont need to make stuff up for that effect, just start describing pointers.

Im the only calc nerd at my school, and I dont really have a place on the ladder. More like a jet pack going up and down, talking to people. People dont mess with me, or something bad happens to them/their calc/their school login. (jk on that last bit :P)

Yeah same here. As for me, girls didn't care about programming and such things, so they weren't really impressed by my programming skills in school. They prefered someone who prefer to go out regularly. :P

/me officially doesn't program, not because he's embarrassed, but because he's known for other things, like "That guy who knows how to make strawberry scented explosives"

It only happened once...

EDIT: Joking about that being my reputation, although the story may or may not be true >_>

Quite ironically, despite being in front of the computer so much, I still spend at least 20 hours a week outside, but that's because my job mostly occurs outside. :P Otherwise I still go outside sometimes, but not as often.

Quote from: Funny #omnimaga quotes
Quote #89 - <nemo> i did it in the most awkward way too. she was packing up at her locker, halfway on the floor and i was like "I need you to look at this", handed her it, she seemed really excited.. even though i had just asked her out via a z80 processor... and then we awkwardly stood there

I haven't. I use my calculator for what it's meant to be. A gaming device.

Hmm a school prank. I believe we share a common goal.  ;)
I accomplished step one when my school hired me to the IT dept. (aka admin login) ((those fools))  >:D
and then senior year my friend "Rick" will strike. (they'll stand no chance  :evillaugh:)

O yeah and that whole romance thing. I usually have better luck talking about being a varsity track and cross country runner over being a calc programmer. But then again cross country doesn't always get that much respect at my school.  <_<

Current plans are to hijack:
1. The morning announcements
2. The school website
3. The computer login
4. The intercom
5. The lunch menu
6. Every calculator in the school
7. The bell tower

Listed in the order of difficulty with 1. being easiest and 7. hardest

Edit: and my school deserves this because today they banned Omnimaga

I might be able to do that one by programming math apps for the math dept. and then hiding a secret y2k hook which is actually quite possible because most people never reset their ram.

You load the rickroll  on every 84 in the school when they try to play games :) . You could also create one that would do the same for the Nspire though that would be much harder...

Personally I don't really go outside for long, but I just can't stand staying inside for an entire day when it's sunny outside. But otherwise I am always in front of the computer.

Also I think we're off-topic with the school computer prank thing now, we should maybe move that discussion in the actual school computer prank thread from a few months ago. However, IMHO the best prank ever would be to replace Windows with Linux on all school computers.

It's not hard to pick up chicks, especially with technology. Whenever you go to the school computer room or you have a computer class or something, sit next to a girl and talk to her, then just take it along from there.  Whatever you do is up to you, but use the computer to watch funny videos or something.

And there's another guy with the same exact first name as me..and it's a weird spelling too. :o
There's both girls and guys, but we mostly keep to ourselves, AFAIK.

Lol we never know actually. I know in elementary school one girl always got her hairs removed completely by her parents, although the disturbing story in the following spoiler was most likely why X.X

Spoiler For Spoiler:
I think that was more because her dad and uncles did child molesting on their kids and they had a preference for guys. X.x Btw they really did: their kid told the truth at school during their final year of elementary school.

I have never heard of Mouse Keys before, but you can make so much noise by enabling it and then pressing the Num Lock key over and over.

I think there's more on top of that...
• Spam shift key
• Hold num lock for ~5 sec.
• Ctrl+Alt+any arrow key (up fixes) (will not work on some computers ie laptops)

I think there are more, but I don't feel like finding many :P

I think you hold it for like 5 seconds.  It's like stickykeys (at least in the beeping), but for the lock keys.
ctrl+alt+UDLR works at my school ;)

Also--
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.  Windows needs to support that.

i haven't tried it either. the only reason that girls come to me is because there is something wrong with their calc, or i downloaded a new game :P
but i am also one of the few that can program on my school, and probably the most advanced, but girls don't really mind... :(

Ctrl+alt+arrow only works on computers with intel integrated graphics.
